If you want to SEE results, you need to decrease your body fat considerably.

If you just want a stronger core (for injury prevention, athletic performance, etc) then you just need to do lots of different exercises in series.... it really doesn't matter they are all effective just do everythign you can think of... do some difficult exercises with low reps and easy exercises with high reps..

difficult would be like hanging leg raises.... crunches with your body hanging off a bed/bench, crunches with heavy weights, etc...

easy being like regular crunches, bicycle, etc

I'm not focused on lowering the body fat % yet as much as I am building muscle, but my core is rock solid underneath the fat

here's some of the stuff I do in the gym for core:
cable machine torso twists
cable machine chops, high to low (works the core as well as everything else)
crunches on a ball with the cable machine
crunch machine
oblique machine twists
front planks
side planks
back plank w/feet on pilates ball
stability on bosu ball (half a pilates ball)
supine leg raises
vertical leg raises
situps with medicine ball in hands
crunches with weighted bar
decline bench torso twists w/medball
crunches on ball w/plate
lower back extensions w/plate on this thing http://us.commercial.lifefitness.com/content.cfm/backextension_3
lower back extensions laying across pilates ball
pullups with knee/leg raises

... and other stuff, thats all I can think of at the moment. variation is good

^^i imagine that cable machine chops follow the motion of chopping wood while holding the cable, going from high (shoulder area) down to a bent over position while working the shoulders, back, arms, abs and legs. probably some type of rotation involved like going from left shoulder to right foot and the opposite.

front squats, zercher squats, high bar full squats, full squats, hack squats, deads, stiff legged deads, good mornings, and any of the olympic lifts

they all use the abdominal muscles as stabilizers.
