I thought the 80GB model was on top of the 60GB one, but it actually replaces it.In that case it is silly to have two models, 30GB and 80GB.They should have replaced the 30GB model with a 40GB one. Or they should have done 30/60/90.

forces you to pay more for the sleekest of the lot (black) besides, unless you get the nano free like their recent sale...there is no reason to buy one....ipod video is the way to go
9/13/2006 6:23:53 AM
Yeah I already have a 60GB video (for which I paid $531) which I bought at the beginning of the year... BUT, I hate anything that is illogical. Hence, my rant [Edited on September 13, 2006 at 6:41 AM. Reason : ]

Apple makes the best mp3 players hands down.
9/13/2006 8:27:58 AM
I dont see why apple hasnt added other functions like the fm radio, voice recorder, picture viewer......I know they arent really needed, but cool to have.
9/13/2006 9:56:59 AM
^ iPod videos do have a picture viewer.

so, anyone find out if they are going to give out student discounts?
9/13/2006 10:24:49 AM
uhh yeah they do.... so at the store i just need a student ID right?
9/13/2006 10:42:13 AM
I bet the release the color 8GB in a few months. The 8GB chips are probably in low supply or something.
9/13/2006 10:48:46 AM
^^^^ yeah, that's true..... i wonder if they'd make more money overall if they offered the 8GB in all colors. and ^, that's probably true too. they love staggering their releases probably b/c they get a ton of people making duplicate purchases. Some people will just "have" to have 8GB now and they might want it in blue, but they'll get the black anyway. Then when they release a blue 8GB, they'll probbaly buy that one too.
9/13/2006 10:55:12 AM
^ Good point there at the end, very good point.
9/13/2006 11:01:55 AM
I got a 2 year PSP on my 60 GB photo. Just trying to find a way for it to defect itself so I can get a replacement 60 GB video.
9/13/2006 11:14:19 AM
the website doesnt list any student discounts on the new nanos yet....
9/13/2006 11:21:17 AM
9/13/2006 11:58:17 AM
^ Bingo. No student discounts on iPods (old or new) and no discounts on iPod accessories, either online or at retail stores.
9/13/2006 12:00:13 PM
All I want is a 32GB nano!!!!!is that really too much to ask for? I guess so....
9/13/2006 12:18:53 PM
9/13/2006 12:42:49 PM
^ Yeah, I'm sure. You used to be able to get ~10% but no more.
9/13/2006 2:24:51 PM
yeah 10% is the standard student discount. it doesn't apply to accessoires though i don't think...
9/13/2006 2:40:22 PM
Actually it applied to pretty much everything apple-branded but it wasn't quite a set percent. That means yes, apple earbuds, apple power adapters, apple cases, etc. have always been discounted for students as well. Those accessory discounts are still in place.[Edited on September 13, 2006 at 5:06 PM. Where were you?
9/13/2006 5:20:02 PM
80GB is the amount of space I have on my laptop. I only have an old 20GB iPod, and it doesn't even come close to holding all my music.
9/13/2006 5:26:08 PM
So do you guys think that the last iPod Nano's are going to go on sale...say at best buy or something or should I wait to get a white 2gig nano for my g/f w/ student discount at bookstore?
9/13/2006 7:09:39 PM
you ought to spend half the money and get her a player that has actual features instead of an elitist design, but i suppose a fool and his money are soon parted, eh?

No way it will take ten years for 100+GB flash based mp3 players. I say 3-4 tops. Moore's law for flash based storage has shown a size doubling once every 12 months. They are already producing 64GB Compact flash cards that will hit the market in early '07. 128GB flash based media is less than a year away and there's no way it will take much more than 2-3 years for the costs to get low enough to put in an mp3 player. Of course by that time the idea of carrying around a device that only plays mp3s will be laughable. Hell, it's almost laughable at this point.edit to provide a link, so I don't sound like I'm talking out of my ass like 0ep up there.]
9/14/2006 10:35:00 AM
^ it is not really about the capacity, but about cost. doesn't the 64GB flash USB disk cost like $8,000?i think it will take at least 5-7 years for costs to be low enough (~ $300) for there to be a 150GB flash based iPod.
9/14/2006 10:40:18 AM
First you said 10, and now you're saying 5-7 with the stipulation of a sub $300 pricepoint.Way to back-peddle there. I still say 3-4 with a more reasonable pricepoint (i.e <$500)
9/14/2006 10:43:25 AM
I think you need more mother's milk.I don't see howabout 10 yearsANDat least 5-7 yearsare incompatible with each other. Obviously, you are only looking at my numbers without looking at the key words before those numbers. And what so unreasonable about a <$300 price point? If you think iPods are going to get more expensive in the future (based on your <$500 price point), then I wonder who is more idiotic amongst us.ANYWAY, IT IS ALL SPECULATION, SO LET'S STOP THIS E-FIGHTING. I AM OFF TO HAVE MY LINNER (LUNCH + DINNER). ADIOS.[Edited on September 14, 2006 at 10:54 AM. Reason : ]
9/14/2006 10:48:42 AM
I never claimed the 128GB version would be the baseline model. I'd imagine by the time they have $500 128GB versions, you'd be able to pick up a 64 GB version for ~$200.I was just saying your time estimates were way off. And you've done nothing to convince me otherwise. And I would say you're going about it in all the wrong ways if you're trying to convince me that 10 is the same thing as 5-7.
9/14/2006 10:55:15 AM
9/14/2006 2:48:06 PM
oh well i think i could afford to spend an extra 10% once in awhile...

WHEN I CAN WATCH XVID/DIVX MOVIES ON AN IPOD I WILL BUY ONE.UNTIL THEN...
9/17/2006 6:16:10 PM
All you have to do is convert them. It's not that hard.
9/17/2006 6:18:21 PM
^ Or you could just buy something off E-Bay which does play XVid and DivX.
9/17/2006 10:14:48 PM
supposedly we'll be getting that fire-engine red iPod tomorrow. Steve's fascination with Bono continues, but fuck it, it's RED.
