diesels by their very nature usually run very lean. There's no throttle plate to regulate air flow, and each cylinder gets a full charge of air every time it intakes.Black smoke is the result of incomplete combustion, and can be the result of dirty injectors that don't atomize the fuel well enough, or an injector pump/system that's dumping large quantities of fuel in the system.A lot of mechanical systems like Bosch's distributor pump actually restrict fuel flow until adequate boost (and subsequently more air) is being built by the turbocharger. You can modify these pumps to begin dumping full fuel earlier in the boost range or even before boost is being made at all. The result? Maybe not enough air to burn the fuel that well, and the resulting smoke.Modern electronic systems can be chipped to inject more fuel.If you saw blue smoke...that's burning oil, and that ain't good.Sometimes if a diesel is cold, then it may smoke light gray a little when starting...that's raw fuel that's not even burned at all or very minimally. It's typical on engines that have an injector pump whose governor goes to full fuel position when the engine is shut down or not running. When cranked, the pump provides full fuel (or at least full no-boost fuel) until the engine reaches idle speed.

I've never seen quite a cloud as I did the night I saw a new-ish ford super duty with the 6.0L power stroke diesel run at a drag strip back home. It wasn't bad when he was on the line but the minute he had the green, a cloud was released on the unsuspecting crowd... it was mostly show though. The truck was quick, but it wasn't that quick. I know it was chipped and had some huge exhaust (4", I think), not sure what else he had done under the hood though.

^^diesel is a whole other game than a gas motor. basically, you can't run one too rich. the added power from cramming more fuel/air in will of course add some wear, but you're talking about motors that are ridiculously overbuilt, already run very high compression ratios, etc...

this goes against the thread topic but... what about diesel tuning without the smoking - like Gale Bank's product packages. I saw a duramax on TV with his flagship tuning package, and it didnt smoke much. wouldnt the idea of better tuning be to eliminate the smoke by achieving more complete combustion - and therefore producing more power per amount of fuel burned? with that said, every hi-po diesel ive seen blows the smoke through the duration of their operation (pulling, drag strip) -

^^^yeah, and triple digit boost numbers.. nuts.^^not really true... even companys like banks that claim no/little smoke increase always do increase it. also, banks is hardly the top name in diesel performance anymore. their products don't produce the power that others do. alot of it is also just the fact that diesel fuel emits alot of soot, etc. when its burned. so obviously, the more you burn the more you're going to see. it's not all about combustion efficiency.[Edited on September 13, 2006 at 8:53 PM. Audi R10 TDI. V12 TDIPretty much has fucking dominated every race it's been in. Set new distance record at 24hrs of Lemans this year and destroyed the field. Won the 12hrs at Sebring.Won the AMLS in 8 races outright, the team remains unbeaten. It'll be a lot harder to make your truck smoke black soon. Ultra low sulfur diesel is required to be available everywhere that sells diesel by October 15th. Its sulfur content is 15ppm as opposed to the 500ppm of regular diesel. Lots of places are already selling it and not labeling it as ULSD. At least that means that all of those diesel passenger cars in europe will be street legal over here now.

since this thread was madeim puttin side pipes on my vette, any chance i can make them throw flames i guess if i was to slide a spark plug in the end it would still have maybe enough gas left that wasnt used to light a flame or two, perhaps? would i need to have it where it was always on or where i could turn it on and off, i know its illegal and all but...who cares. i wouldnt get down on it much anyways gas it $texas with that car.

^you cut the igniton from the motor and put it into the plugs on the side pipes letting raw fuel go through your motor and get ignited in the side pipes.

yea luckily they are pretty thick pipes so i hopefully wont do too much damage, andthey were free so i mean what more can u ask for but to TRY an dmess them up hahayea i would totally run a seperate ignition switch to them, and propane may be a way to go but thats a heck of a system to rig up, wont it run off the excess fuel in the exhaust?i'll check that site nowk thx

ok so i looked into it a little moreif im running the vette it should work since its got a carb, EFI cars it wont work as well due to the Cat Convt. I think i could just get 2 plugs, 2 coils and some type of switch to run to the battery terminal and into the car to shut it on and off. I think the easiest way is to just drill a hole in teh pipe, weld a nut to the pipe to not let it leak and then put the plug and coil setup like i said. I may work on my MR2 since it tends to run a little lean anyways but im not sure. how would I have to set up the switch though is my only question? it would be a constant spark i guess, just get some kind of switch from autozone or radioshack??? what kind though? and how would i need to rig it electrically, sounds like the other part is easy.

You've got to have a pulsed signal to get the coil to fire. You can't just feed it 12V and expect it to spark. Splice into the trigger wire used on the engine coil and run that to the coil for the exhaust spark plug, then run a 12V line from the battery through a switch or a relay so you can turn it on and off.

Evidently, you gotta have cam-actuated injectors. I'm sure somebody could come up with a scheme to Jake a regular engine (and most likely there already is), but I don't know about it.

Everyone here is a complete idiot!!!! The black smoke coming from your exhaust is unburned fuel. The reason that it is heavier when you add power to a diesel is bc there is more fuel going into the combustion chamber.
