No wonder why the shit hurts, the bitch is using listerine. Didn't they tell you NOT to use ANY TYPE OF MOUTHWASH with alcohol in it?Listerine is bad. Find a mouthwash without alcohol and go to wholefoods and buy some sea salt, mix it with warm water and gargle some it a few times a day for the first week or two.
7/25/2006 4:48:39 PM
^ That will definitely help. Alcohol stunts the healing process.
7/25/2006 5:00:48 PM
she's trying to "disinfect" her piercing
7/25/2006 5:01:14 PM
I looked online. Couldn't find anything that told you NOT to use Listerine. Actually, I saw a few sites that recommended it, specifically the Orange because it was supposedly the strongest? I have no clue myself though.http://www.safepiercing.org/oralRisks.htmlAlso...(PDF)http://www.safepiercing.org/PDFs/aftercare_oral.pdf[Edited on July 25, 2006 at 5:04 PM. Reason : PDF]

Listerine is the best thing you can use, especially after eating. How the fuck does it not promote healing, it will help prevent infection.Seriously, this is common fucking sense.
7/25/2006 5:06:02 PM
i was told to not use listerine also - i forget the name of the stuff i was told to use - it was made my crest or colgate i think tho - been 6yrs i can't quite recall
7/25/2006 5:08:08 PM
For every piercing I've had (haven't had the tongue done, though) I was told to absolutely not use alcohol to clean it.
7/25/2006 5:10:20 PM
what about hydrogen peroxide
7/25/2006 5:11:54 PM
7/25/2006 5:12:59 PM
i've always been told, no matter how much you want to, do NOT use alcohol on a piercing. a sea salt wash/gargle/rinse is so much better for it.i don't know if this is 100% true, but what I was told by a professional piercer (i think it was the girl I went to at Warlocks when i had some troubles with my ear getting infected) is that alcohol and a lot of similar things kill ALL germs. But your skin needs certain bacteria to heal the punctured skin or muscle, so it doesn't stay raw.
7/25/2006 5:17:33 PM
A quick google will confirm that various websites for professional peircings recomend using Listerine mouthwash to clean the piercing, they just note that overuse may irritate the toungue.

I've had mine done 3 times (had to keep taking it out because of work and eventually started redoing it myself) - every time its done, I go through 2 weeks of a horrible lisp and having a hard time to swallow - this happened even when I had it done professionally
7/25/2006 6:04:05 PM
ok im not going to read what everyone else wrote so ill just tell you about mine, ive had mine since 1999, and yes it hurts like hell and almost impossible to eat for a few days. mine was actually swollen for over a month. not like swollen as the first couple of days but swollen enough that I couldnt change to a shorter bar. I suggest when the swelling goes down you get a smaller one because you wont chip your teeth. anyways, the lisp will go away and soon you wont even know its there, be careful when u eat with the original bar it because it will slip and sometimes you will bite on it, hence the smaller one. dont forget to clean it so plaque wont build up on uit as well.

Wait, apples, your piercing isn't even centered? Who did you go to?
7/25/2006 10:10:36 PM
My piercing guy told me to use Listerine when I got my lip done...he says the same thing for tongues.
7/25/2006 10:32:21 PM
My piercing guy said to never listen to my friends or crap I read on the Internet and to follow the instructions he gave me.

no he pierced it off center b/c i wanted it far back so it wouldnt be noticeable when i talked and because i didnt want to chip any of my teeth. and because i dont have a long tongue he had to pierce the left side of the bottom and went diagonally backwards and centered it-so the front is center but the bottom is left and up close. BUT the good thing is the swelling went down some-but that may be from the advil im taking every 4 hrs BUT the bad thing is i still cant feel the front left side of the tongue

and the only thing the dude told me was to not eat spicy foods or drink coffee. he said i could use listerine if i wanted but most people didnt b/c the alcohol burns-but it wouldnt be bad-it didnt burn me so i use it
7/26/2006 2:57:14 PM
Have you actually spoken with your piercer? You need to call them, that's their job. They'd rather you have a safe healthy piercing than not talk to you, have one reject and then blab their name everywhere like it's their fault.
7/26/2006 3:08:42 PM
i got it done in another state-pretty far away when i went to visit my friend. i dont think i kept his number
7/26/2006 3:44:29 PM
OK. If you can't find the shop on the internet or from your friend, I would suggest that you call a shop and ask to speak to a piercer and just ask them. You at least need to speak to A professional.Even though this shop is in Atlanta, here is a link to the shop I use: http://piercing.org/pexy/studio/studio.htmlWhy do I use them? Because I called randomly and had a 30 minute conversation one day to answer my questions about the piercings. They are super helpful and willing to answer your questions or concerns. Their number is on the page linked above.

biotene is a great mouthwash to use - NEVER EVER use listerine - it's got alcohol and that's BAD for healing piercings (remember, piercings are just cuts, you wouldn't want to keep putting alcohol over your cut would you?)I find that swishing with sea salt mixed with water helps as well, my tongue still gets slightly swollen RIGHT before I get a cold - even still. DO NOT use regular table salt, you can find sea salt almost anywhere now.Don't try eating citrus things within the first two weeks or so, stay with soft foods, a bit more bland in nature - again, you wouldn't want to go putting citrus on an open wound now would you?I'm suprised that the piercer even pierced your tongue if it was slightly off-center... tbh that's a bit weird/sketch.For the record, I've had mine pierced for 5 years.
7/26/2006 6:29:46 PM
I've already said everything you just said, but for some reason the morons in this thread think Listerine is the best. They are wrong.
7/26/2006 6:42:27 PM
OK, we obviously have a few members of the Dumb-Fuck Brigade chiming in.But, a few things first...wolfpack23 said "^^ haha, tramp stamp with be that retarded tatoo alot of girls get on their lower back right above their ass". Its also called a TARGET.My tongue was fine for 3 days until I went to my grandma's b-day dinner...had fried seafood....OUCH! Then it swole up like a beach ball for 4-5 days. But it went away. Its gonna be sore, for some time, anyways. But pay attention to not feeling sensation anywhere. That's a BAD sign.OK....Listerine has alcohol in it. It is great for cleaning/disinfecting. HOWEVER, it is a bit harsh, and actually can inhibit the body's ability to repair itself. The body forms a pre-skin layer, I think to protect from future infection (I'm no biology, physiology, or any health/medical-related major). Because of the strength of Listerine, yeah, you'll kill the infection-causing microbes, but you'll also slow the healing process, too.Because of the properties of the mouth, its very inviting for more microbes to come back. So you don't want to inhibit the healing process as much as possible.Listerine was used before the piercing. I was then told to use Listerine every three days, but that was it.I was also instructed (and did this religiously) to use sea salt dissolved in distilled water I think it was a 1/4 teaspoon per cup, but don't quote me. I made 1 gallon batches, and I just put some in a 20 oz bottle to carry with me. I used it to rinse after any meal, drink, or smoke. Just swished really well with one mouthful, and it did fine. Just be sure to swish all around the mouth, and move the tongue barbell around to work the saline solution in the piercing. If you're considering this, you can call KAOZ in Gainesville, FL at (352) 335-1427. I'm sure they'd get a kick out of getting a call from Raleigh, NC about cleaning a piercing. Plus, they can tell you about this method better than I.Others have advised to use a non-alcohol mouthwash, and use as with the saline solution discussed above, after every meal, drink, or smoke. I've even read one place advises a non-alcohol mouthwash, then the saline solution, both after every meal, drink, or smoke. Also, tartsquid said, "Jason did nice work with my nipples. Didn't even hurt." No offense, but I'd have to say you're a fucking liar. And I know if you talk to anyone who's gotten their nips pierced knows it hurts like a BEEE-OTCH! Most painful piercing that I've gotten, though I'm sure there's worse. But piercings don't get their on their own, but, like someone said to me, "You've gotta earn them".[Edited on July 26, 2006 at 7:22 PM. Reason : Correct some minor details]

Ronny you fucking idiot alcohol is good for cuts, not to mention many safe piercing websites recommend using Listerine orange specifically after eating and for occasional routine cleaning.Fucking idiot, go take some more emo photos of your big man-bear boyfriend.

From this: http://piercing.org/old/old_care.pdfDon't use any antibacterial or antibiotic products, peroxide or alcohol on your piercing. There's a whole section on oral care, including:Don't use toothpaste, mouthwash, peroxides or other oral care products such as Listerine Pocket Packs strips during healing - such products do not aid in healing and may irritate the piercing.[Edited on July 27, 2006 at 9:02 AM. I just healed from a puncture wound, you know what the prescribed wound care was? Hydrogen peroxide and an alcohol based disinfectant. But you can also just use common sense.
