Does MacOS still eat memory like it use to? If so, then PCs will require less memory than the Macs.
7/21/2006 11:22:08 AM
OS X uses memory.... i don't know about "eating" it. My 1st gen Mac Mini came with 512MB installed and I always felt it was a bit sluggish. I upgraded to 1GB a couple weeks ago and notice quite a difference. On the other hand, my wifes MacBook also came with 512MB. It was fast to begin with - i upgraded it to 1.25GB and haven't actually noticed much of a difference.

Well I remember working on a Powerbook G4 with 1GB of memory and it just felt a lot slower than my PC with 1 GB. Programs opened a lot slower and the system just felt a bit sluggish.
7/21/2006 11:39:25 AM
well, the base demographic for Apples doesn't care about technical issues as long as applications seem to open fast.As a developer, I wouldn't look at Macs beyond shell scripting or a little bit of J2EE through Eclipse.

Mac loses money on everything except iPods
7/21/2006 11:43:43 AM
As far as I'm concerned, the new Intel Macs are a whole new ball game. It's completely off limits to make references to G3, G4, or even G5s. The benchmarks have shown that even the low end Intel Macs beat the hell out of most of their previous offerings. The OS X interface has always lacked, as Macboys say, "the snappy". You rarely get instantaneous feedback when, for example, right clicking or opening menus, like you usually do in Windows. But the new ones are certainly much more "snappy" than the old ones, and of course applications run a lot faster too.
7/21/2006 11:44:08 AM
^^ Mac doesn't make iPod. And no, Apple makes money on nearly everything they sell. Their gross margin on Macs nears 30%.
7/21/2006 11:44:55 AM
Gargs: the differences are almost all internal. The spec differences are pretty minimal. I would still consider buying a mac book if it fit my needs, but no way would i mess with the Pro for the reasons I already mentioned.
7/21/2006 11:46:07 AM
what kind of internal...I am just curious. My sister is considering buying a Mac, and I am having a hard time seeing the spec differences between a $1,100 macbook and a $2,000 Macbook pro. It's a Mac, and she doesn't do a lot of 3D to justify spending more on a video card.
7/21/2006 11:48:09 AM
then tell her to get the macbook
7/21/2006 11:50:20 AM
^^ display size, video, an extra port (hdmi i think?), processor speed, keyboard illumination, aluminum casing (that's supposed to change, the Al has a lot to do with the heat IMO), front row comes standard, someone finish this list[Edited on July 21, 2006 at 11:51 AM. 7/21/2006 11:50:57 AM
Front Row and iSight are standard on the Macbook as well.
7/21/2006 11:52:40 AM
and the rest?
7/21/2006 11:53:13 AM
The only other differences are display size, and 1.83ghz vs 2.0 ghz.I am just trying to figure if those 2 differences are worth $800V - you gotta pay extra for firewire 800[Edited on July 21, 2006 at 12:04 PM. Reason : .]

display size which is about a 150 dollar step up, video (integrated intel versus ati x1600) which is a 300 dollar difference at least, processor which is another couple hundred bucks (retarded I know), the Pro supports dual link DVI so you can power a big LCD, the regular macbook only supports single link dvi and has to have the dongle to do it.I believe, but am not sure, that the Pro has a faster hdd. It will also cause burns if i touches exposed skin.

Being that I'm sitting doing visio development right now, i can tell you that Omni can't hold a candle to the functionality of Visio. Also, Safari is a REALLY shitty browser.
7/21/2006 1:45:24 PM
thats why you dont use safari lol
7/21/2006 1:50:26 PM
7/21/2006 2:27:21 PM
I use Camino, "pimped out" a little bit to give it some more functionality - http://pimpmycamino.com/ It is lean and fast, and with some help, you can add enough features to make it usable (mouse gestures, find-as-you-type)I agree that Safari is crap. It alone has crashed more on me than all other OS X programs combined. Its very limited functionally too, and I think it's ugly as hell.Firefox is just way too slow on OS X, especially when you add extensions and stuff. Supposedly FireFox 3.0 will have a native Cocao build, which would be sweet.
7/21/2006 2:34:51 PM
^^ ff's not slow for me on a good connection? what are u running it on?
7/21/2006 3:22:07 PM
the connection has nothing to do with it. The actual program just runs slow and is a memory hog on OS X because it's not written natively
7/21/2006 3:24:15 PM
again i dont have that problem. i asked what youre running it on. i'm telling you that on the machine ive used it on, it's not slow.[Edited on July 21, 2006 at 3:29 PM. Reason : ]
7/21/2006 3:28:40 PM
You stating it is not slow is pretty meaningless.I can query a site simultaneously in FF and Safari, and Safari always loads it faster. I'm stuck using both browsers because Safari has that auth bug and is unstable with our Oracle front end, but Firefox takes way longer to render a page than Safari. For example:http://forums.cisco.com/eforum/servlet/NetProf?page=mainTakes about 3 seconds longer to finish loading in FF than Safari. Most everything else I do is on our corporate intranet.Neither one wins any awards in my book, but for 90% of my usage, Safari's faster rendering wins out.[Edited on July 21, 2006 at 3:40 PM. Reason : ba]
7/21/2006 3:38:08 PM
i just dont think ff is slow lol. and im a performance freak. i used to love safari. until i started using ff. safari has too many ways to die, if it loads instantaneously and then crashes its kind of useless. i think ff is fast enough, and stable.
7/21/2006 3:43:25 PM
anyone have an unused Mac laptop they wanna donate to me to make me convert to OSX?
7/21/2006 6:02:19 PM
why? you seem to be able to judge everything else without ever actually using it, why should osx be any different?
7/21/2006 6:29:34 PM
buuuuuuuuuuuuuurn.donate a mac? haha
7/21/2006 8:04:34 PM
I have used OSX plenty. I just gotta experiment more with it to see beyond its eye candy.

7/21/2006 8:10:31 PM
plenty of use... should give you an idea about it right?
7/21/2006 8:11:32 PM
the disadvantage of using a mac is that it will instantly turn you flamboyantly gay.

Can't use eBay's built-in HTML auction builder on a Mac, hafta use other software.
7/22/2006 9:44:46 AM
I'm a self-professed idiot when it comes to coding and shit like that, and have no interest in learning it. That's why all you CS types are sweating your asses off in labs for. I really want to like the new MacBook, but they have to get the heat issues ironed out before I get one. Still using an old Imac that does everything fine, but I want more (any) portability. The ladyfriend bought her powerbook last year and it kicks ass. If apple can get the kinks worked out the Macbook in the next couple of months - then its going to be the laptop to have. The MacPro is fine if you need the horsepower, but I think I'll be able to dick around in Tdub just fine without it. YMMV
7/22/2006 1:38:02 PM
^ spoke w an apple dude yesterday, has a 15" pro personnally... said it gets pretty warm but doesnt significantly bother him, just uses a cooling pad on his desk, says it doesnt heat too much and new updates are allowing a processor to be shut down when not in use to help with the problem... he's a techie there and said he hasn't had any complaints about burned desks, etc... that's just what i was told
7/22/2006 2:09:17 PM
Never buy the first release of an Apple product.
7/22/2006 2:27:54 PM
^^ he's lying to you. if you look at apple's own documentation, it specifically says the thing should not be used on your lap, because its too hot and can cause discomfort and or injury.Go into an apple store, fire up a 3d app for about 5 minutes, and then feel the underside.
7/22/2006 3:20:46 PM
he said not to use it on your lap or on a bed, etc.. which... just makes sense anyway considering you'd be covering up the vents... my old laptop would get to hot like that (non-Mac)i know itll get hot, i'm not that naive about it, i just don't think it's as big of a deal as people are making it out to be, especially with their new firmware updates, and i would imagine apple is working on the problem for the new releases of the mb's[Edited on July 22, 2006 at 4:54 PM. ^^ I was doing some work at the 'business room' at my condo building (w/ free fax machine, free copier, etc). i had some stuff to fax. i had my powerbook down there, and i was running some simulation data to print out and fax back to raleighthe computer was so hot that it actually melted/marked an imprint of the laptop outline onto the table surface. it wasn't a nice table or anything, but still the fact that it did something to a hard surface, i'd hate to see what it would do to my lap]
