Yeah, Cary isn't all planned communities with restrictive home-owners associations either.

Just avoid the west side.

San Diego and Columbus are also big cities. New York is the only gifuckinggantic huge city on the list.

Raleigh, technically, is larger than some of the other cities listed in terms of combined statistical area.

NOVA does suck ass... only move there if you like traffic, politics, and boring people at bars.

I am not sure but I do think it is ironic you guys are all bashing what is good news for our area.. we NCSU people usually brag about the smallest of things, but when a national publication states we live in one of the best places we drop our mouth and call them crazy?

Idiots.. we DO live in a great place.. get off the web more and you might realize it.

^you are off with that. Most of the criticism has been of cary and the places similar to cary on that list (NOVA, columbia, md, etc.), and most of us call in to question the methodology of a list that ranks boring ass places like that so high.

Just because raleigh is high on that doesn't mean we are critical of Raleigh proper.

I'll never understand why people put so much stock in "job growth" - that just drives up the cost of living for everyone.

I enjoy living where I can use my money to manipulate and control those around me. I can't do that if everyone makes as much or more than I do.

wolftrap's guide to moving
1. get a job, then move there
2. if you can't find a job there first, don't move there

Raleigh would be cooler if instead of old people moving to north raleigh it was young people moving downtown. But I guess thats the case everywhere.

all I was saying is that Fairfax County is a lot nicer than Cary

ask the 1 million people who live there and enjoy one of the highest median incomes in the country

Cary, NC can suck it

money does not equal nice. along with that highest median income also comes one of the highest costs of living in the country.

im willing to bet that the quality of life in cary is better then fairfax...even if they don't get paid as much.

but if you want to continue to beat a dead horse and debate my opinion that's cool

Quote :
"money does not equal nice."

maybe not to you, but i think all the rich people in Fairfax County would say youre suffering from sour grapes.

Quote :
"along with that highest median income also comes one of the highest costs of living in the country."

while the costs of living in Fairfax County are higher than Cary, I'd still say people in NOVA are doing alright. At least people there can afford the prices of housing with their enormous salaries, unlike here in San Diego where NOBODY can afford to own a home. If you want to talk about high costs of living, NOVA pales in comparison to anywhere in Southern California or the Bay Area. Yeah, Cary is cheaper to live, but you get what you pay for. Fairfax County has some of the best (if not THE best) public schools, shopping (Tysons Corner is world famous), museums and colonial history along with civil war battlegrounds, public transportation (METRO is the second biggest subway system in the country), one of the largest public library systems in the world, and it borders the nation's Capital. Cary is a planned suburban Utopia for the nuevo riche. It has no roots or identity. And the very thing that you claimed didn't make things 'nice' is the only reason why Cary even exists in the first place: MONEY. But now is where you argue that Cary has all those things Farfax has...right?

Quote :
"im willing to bet that the quality of life in cary is better then fairfax...even if they don't get paid as much."

I'm sure the people who live in Cary love it and that's all that matters. In reality it's pretty absurd to compare a county of a million people to a small city of 100,000. Fairfax County is 10 times bigger in every sense of the word. Cary is safer and quieter, Fairfax is busier and more vibrant.

im not argueing about the pros and cons of fairfax and cary. i honestly dont care...i dont like either place very much.

im merely saying that money does not equal happiness...something even you agreed with not too long ago.

in this thread you say:
Quote :
"ask the 1 million people who live there and enjoy one of the highest median incomes in the country"

and
Quote :
"i think all the rich people in Fairfax County would say youre suffering from sour grapes. "

yet less then a month ago, when someone mentioned that having a big house would make them happy, you said:
Quote :
"when will people understand

having a huge house =/= happiness"

and
Quote :
"'d say having the career of your dreams, living in a beautiful city, having close friends and a loving family can make up for shit that you can buy"

its pretty obvious that you just change your thoughts and ideas to make yourself appear to be on a pedestal. i bet even if you were miserable in california, you wouldn't say it....then you wouldn't be able to look down upon everyone that really is happy.

to which i listed off an array of reasons why fairfax is nicer than cary, NONE of which included big houses

just admit it, you will try to argue with me about anything because youre a troll with nothing better to do. when i try to play your game and present counterpoints to your arguments you change the subject and attack me when you have nothing else to say. it's kind of sad that youre the only person on this board who will take ANYTHING i say and try to turn it into an argument. i'd probably be flattered if i actually sat high atop a pedestal looking down on people all day long

^ Cary has its roots, you are dead wrong there. And there is no need to hate on Raleigh because you didn't like it.

NOVA and Cary are both haven for yuppies. In fact, I see nothing wrong with that. Who cares? Maybe when some of you grow up you'll realize what nice places both areas are.

Instead you all look like retards fighting over which suburb is better. Get over it. Both are nice places.

Quote :

Yay. You're not special for it. So do a lot of people. There is a 99% chance I will be living there in La Jolla starting 2008. And for someone who doesn't "give a shit" about NOVA, you sure as hell seem dead-set on making it look like some wondrous paradise in comparison to Cary.

All I know is that I have a lot of family who live in Fairfax County and we explored this topic.

When they came down to visit and saw the surrounding areas, they were impressed and thought it was very nice and familiar. I pushed the limits a little and compared parts of Raleigh and Cary to Alexandria, VA. Haha, big mistake. There exists a certain degree of snobbery between the two areas although the similarities are uncanny.

I agree with most of what was said here because Alexandria is older and more established. I see Cary and Northern Raleigh as a sort of "miniature Fairfax."

And come to think of it, you can almost look to Alexandria to predict the future of Raleigh. They keep talking about expanding the downtown area into making it an economic center filled with attractive homes. Nobody's really thrown this word out yet, but I would suspect Raleigh is trying to create an "Olde Town" that could aspire to one day hope to give Old Town Alexandria a run for its money. That would be nice, wouldn't it?

It would be nice

but i can't exactly envision it

Raleigh is in the middle of an identity crisis

it can't decide whether to keep it's old school southern charm of being the state capital or exploit the tech boom and the healthcare industry

NOVA is booming because its economy is tied to a business that will never go under- the Federal Government

Raleigh has a lot going for it, and it will be interesting to see what happens in the next 20 years

1. Don't concentrate too much on history. It's snobby and elitist. If you're gonna use history as a way to measure superiority, then you might as well start bragging about how many slaves your ancestors owned.
2. And stop bringing up the money thing like it means shit to us. Like, seriously, NC is a poor state. Last I heard, we were 37th in per capita personal income while Virginia was 7th. So, oooooo, you got us...we're poor!!! You know the whole "valley of humility between two mountains of conceit" joke? Yeah, that was originally about NC, and we're proud of it.
3. It's impossible to define an entire city by just a few parts.

And finally...what you and plenty of other people in this thread seem to be ignoring is that people have different preferences and different needs/means. I mean, some people wanna live in a dense area with access to good shopping and yummy eats nearby. Some people wanna live fifteen minutes outside the city, ten minutes from a store, on a three acre lot in a newly developed neighborhood of McMansions. And then you have needs/means--does a recently retired widow have the same needs/means as a young couple with a baby? A divorced thirtysomething? A new college graduate? A single mom?

There are also all sorts of other factors added in there, and mixed development projects are popular because they can serve a bunch of different "types" of people, but preference will always come back in...

And preference/choice are things that we value. Some people may choose to live in Cary and give up some other choices in the process. It doesn't make them inferior to you; it means their preferences/needs/means may be different from yours.

Anyway, that's why lists like the one in the first post are useless without context and why your whole "FAIRFAX IS THE GREATEST PLACE TO LIVE IN THE WORLD" argument is stupid.
