why is this thread still going on, who would want to hassle their family's friends to buy knives from them out of guilt?
7/13/2006 12:11:05 PM
They're good knives for the price. Nobody here is a fucking professional chef that needs expensive ass knives. They are a good set to have at your house.

I just had the "interview" for this position this week and got "hired" and I must say it's a COMPLETE waste of time. (Had to fill out application, sit through like 1.5 hrs of bullshit, and got told, "You're special to us here and we welcome you to the team." crap. Here's the basis:* It's $15 per APPOINTMENT (and each appt is 45 mins-1 hr) hence why they hype it up and tell you it's $15 an hour + commission on the phone (making you think you're gonna be working like 9-5 or some shit). Commission is NOTHING great for this job. If you do 10 appts in one week, you're guranteed $150, but if you don't sell anything, you're screwed. I need to go back to a guranteed $400/week AT LEAST.*You have to BUY the demo set and go to RANDOM people's houses to sell the shit....a bunch of knives...WTF?*The only good thing about it I guess is that you determine your schedule. They try to hype it up like, "Our headquarters is in NY and it averages $18 million [or billion] a year." and "This will look good on your resume." blah blah blah Me preferably, I like a job with SET hours and SET pay. Needless to say I'm not gonna go back for training WHICH OF COURSE YOU DON'T GET PAID FOR. So yeah...basically, I'm NOT gonna go to the training B.S. next week.[Edited on March 30, 2007 at 11:37 AM. Reason : UGH THIS JOB SUCKS!]

^We could've told you all that years ago.

^^uh its a fucking SALES job, what did you expect?I don't see anything horrible about it at all. buying the knives up front is kind of gay, but it's pretty standard.I know plenty of people who made good incomes selling cutco knives. Just because YOU are lazy and want some cushy desk job and have no ambition or actually want any performance quotas doesn't make the company suck, or their recruiting underhanded.
3/30/2007 11:52:01 AM
i worked for cutco, it sucked... blah blah blah...but to get back to his original point, the sales presentation does actually work, and combine that with the guilt factor of your family friends, they know that there's no way you will go through that many appointments without selling somethingso i'm sure you would get kicked out pretty damn quick if you just tried to collect on the base pay
3/30/2007 12:08:35 PM
Do everyone a favor and forget about Cutco... you are simply ripping off anyone who buys them (and odds are it will be a good friend or family member so why would you want to do that). If anyone is looking for a good knife that is affordable (not a Wusthof Classic, Henckel Pro, Global G2, MAC, Shun, etc) then I'd be more than happy to dig out my last Cook's Illustrated that ranked the best knives with a budget in mind. Whatever you do, don't buy this shit (or try selling it).

10 years ago I did an interview for this. They are pretty much bullshit though. When they told me I had to go through their unpaid training, I had to buy their sample set, & I had to find my own appointments, I walked out.
3/30/2007 12:36:42 PM
^^i have some cutco knives i got from a flea market. they are pretty damn nice (albeit I paid a LOT less than the salesmen sell them for im sure)
3/30/2007 6:06:10 PM
meh, it can be a pretty good way to learn sales. you'll either come out of it really mad at yourself or with a new confidence that you can close people and walk out of a strangers house with a check.

if you just need a G... go work in a restaurant somewhere. and if you are lucky get a bartending job... easier said than done but you could make a G in two weeks

southwestern called me just before my junior year being very vague about an "internship opportunity." of course, this happened to coincide perfectly with me putting my resume up on the career center...how exciting.20 ppl were at the presentation and all but 1 (maybe 2) left when they said anyone who wasnt still interested was free to go. i decided to stick around and tell the girl what a bait and switch they were running and how they should be ashamed of themselves for wasting my and everyone elses time (i mean look how many people werent even remotely interested).
