the key, when you cheat, is to still keep calories below your maintinence so as to not cause weight gain. sugar leeches glycogen from your muscles though, you cant avoid that.

when i first started tww i ran 42 miles a weekit was all downhill after the starting tww part

anybody got any tips on treadmill running?i run 4-6mi outside usually 3x/week (slowly ~8:45-9min miles), but am getting ready to only have treadmill access for 3 weeksi generally hate treadmills and get very bored after only a mile or two, also tend to run faster due to boredom and therefore tire out more quicklyany ideas on not getting bored? or how to convert my outside running to the treadmill?

music/tv hot chicks on bikes or doing crunches next to you

If it's just three weeks, do a few minutes to warm your muscles then blast it out and be done with it. You aren't going to backslide if you are doing this, and you'll get it out of the way. Treadmills suck, feel like I've been on the ocean when I step off em.
7/7/2006 9:58:16 PM
I can't run on a treadmill. This will sound stupid but I just can't keep a steady pace on them--I just prefer to run outside. At least it feels like I'm accomplishing something/going somewhere.

treadmill spshedmill. it's all the same. really.

I have always heard that people feel better and more energetic after a run. I try to get three miles, three mornings a week. But I have found that I am a lot more tired during the day... Of course that might be due to running at 4:30 in the morning
7/9/2006 9:25:29 PM
gets you in shape in case you need to flee from something on foot.

^^^^How long will you be on an actual ship? If it's just for a week or so, you can kind of milk your treadmill training so your running ability doesn't go away. If it's for longer than that, you'll find your road running skills will deteriorate after you've just been running treadmill. Or at least I've found that.

ruined knees when you're 55
7/10/2006 9:53:04 AM
^^ One of my friends who is in the Navy was on a destroyer for months at a time and ran the marathon in Greece when he was in port in Crete for a month. I'm sure road running deteriorates some, but not too bad if this guy can run a marathon after being on a ship- most likely running on treadmills I assume.[Edited on July 11, 2006 at 2:36 PM. If you're worried about ruining your knees, make sure you have good shoes and run on grass/dirt trails rather than on concrete. Unless you are a serious marathon runner, if your knees are giving you that much trouble you either have really bad form or a phsyical deficiency which is your problem, not running in general.

i was doing BIKRAM YOGA today and I noticed the definition in my legs and arms now. i think most of it came from running. running in combination with another exercise is awesome, G.

bttmftweighed today and clocked in at 195.started 8 week+3 days ago and i was at ~ 213. Sticking with the diet change and exercise routine has been suprisingly very easy.so much for statistics.
8/16/2006 9:29:00 PM
it'd probably be more useful to your body to run 3-3.5 miles 3 times a week than 2 miles 4 times a week. I aim for 3.12 or higher each time
8/17/2006 10:32:44 AM
eh, i do 2 miles 5 days a week and full court basketball 2+hrs a day sat and sun.Its continuing to work so im going to stick with it.
8/17/2006 10:52:46 AM
i didn't get a chance to reply to this while i was at sea...thanks for the advice, i was able to hit the treadmill about 2/3 of the time i was on board (~20 days) and it actually went pretty well for some strange reason i was able to run longer (and faster!) than i normallly do on a treadmill so i got in at least 3mi each time and got up to 6mi a few daysmy normal 'land' running has suffered a bit, but it's likely because i took a week off when i returned (due to a cold) and i've moved for a few months so i'm still trying to find a good route or two that i like...

I snack on candy, Peanut Bits or whatever they are called......I just am not really hungry ever, i can eat once a day and I am ok.....and i run 5 days a week(for the past 10 years) I think i am back down to 160(good weight for me) When i was in S Florida for 3 months, i went all the way down to 150. It is nice in the middle of winter to be able to run by the ocean on the board walk in shorts at midnight.......[Edited on August 17, 2006 at 7:41 PM. Reason : w]

HS cross country killed my knees, plus I saw dudes get hit by cars, I'd much rather be playing a sport for my exercise
8/17/2006 7:42:54 PM
My weight has flutuated between 220-245 lbs since I got to State. I have been running 3miles/ 4-5 times a week for 8 years. I lost alot of weight when i first started in HS (160 lbs) and then gained some back before losing alot again in basic training. You can run all damn day but if your diet isn't right, you still won't lose weight. It also doesn't help when you work 8-10 hr days at a computer and you have to exercise at the end of the day to make up for all that sitting you did at work. It really fucks with you sometimes.
8/18/2006 2:29:17 PM
yeah....
8/18/2006 2:40:08 PM
i do 3+ miles 4-5 days a week and lift immediately after. I was a little over 180 when i started back in april, i've lost wieght i'm down to 170-175, but i've lost a great amount of fat and i've toned up quite a bit. I eat very very good and now my abs look even better than they did in high school..thank you planet fitness..lol

pushed my daily up to 3.2 miles yesterday, wasnt hard at all. I hadnt noticed but we were doing 2.2 miles a day instead of 2, which threw my min/mile measurement a bit off.I think I am going to take fridays off. 3.2 miles a day M-Th and 2-3 hours of full court basketball sat and sun doesnt give my legs much breathing room.anyone know a good reliable website that lists what you burn for how long you run? Ive googled a few times but I always seem to get obscure sounding sites. Just wondering if there is a standard site that is good for that info.
8/25/2006 9:20:15 AM
it varies so much you can only really get the most basic of ideashttp://encarta.msn.com/media_461520244/Calories_Burned_During_Exercise.htmlthe swimming speed they have on there is very slow.... most folks can do 50 yards in about 45 seconds with no problem as a pace. also depends on form and strokesthe running seems to be pretty high paced really...i prefer swimming due to much lower body stresses (back doesn't hurt when i swim, and everything below my knees don't hurt when i swim)

define aerobic exercise?certain sustained heart rate? Im not sure I hit the 30 min mark even with 3.2 miles.
8/25/2006 11:17:42 AM
8/25/2006 11:24:39 AM
fyi, they've found out that incidental movement (fidgeting) burns many more calories than most exercises.... mostly b/c you fidget all day but you only exercise an hour to an hour and a half...but doing anything is better than nothing
8/25/2006 11:26:06 AM
I mean i could stretch out the 3.2 miles to hit 30 minutes and maybe even a bit longer, but if the trade off is my heart rate not being up enough to effectively benefit me then i wont do it.But it sounds like any running for that time will do the trick.
