just got this email. looks interesting:

Quote :
"Electric Orange is everything you'd expect from ING DIRECT and more:

* It pays high interest
o 5.30% APY on every dollar for balances of $100,000 or more
o 5.05% APY on balances between $50,000 and $100,000
o 3.00% APY for balances up to $50,000
* A MasterCard® Debit Card for purchases
* Free ATM access at more than 32,000 locations nationwide
* Free Bill Pay
* Send money securely to anyone for Free with Electric Checks
"

in short, an interest bearing checking account with a debit card, ATM access and bill pay.

Quote :
"The expansion, which Kuhlmann termed "audacious," comes as the bank plans to offer high-yield online checking accounts amid intensifying competition. ING DIRECT will make the checking accounts, dubbed "Electric Orange," available nationally Feb. 1. It plans a limited introduction next month, making checking available to 400,000 of its most active customers – ones who make frequent deposits and withdrawals in their online savings accounts. Kuhlmann said he hopes that in Electric Orange's first year, half a million customers will sign up. "

It's not on the main page. So full roll-out expected first of Feb., you have to have ING Direct to open up an Electric Orange account. Sounds like the checking account from heaven. I think they also have paper checks available for use as well, should you need them.

I'll still keep my SECU account, but open up one of these as well. It'd be nice to be able to use a MasterCard where I can't use my Visa (though that's not usually a problem). I just would want a brick and mortar bank to go to until I get over my (and my wife's) fear of completely paperless banking.

If you want a nice savings account...HSBCDirect. 5.05%.
So I'd get this for checking and HSBC for savings...and win.

Just call them up. Took me 10-15 minutes tops to set up a savings account and a CD with them.

shawna wins again.

Anyone have any thoughts on ING's funds? I wonder if their strategic allocation fund is worth looking into.

^ who manages your 401k? Most 401k managers have retirement-year funds set up now, like "2035" or "2040", based on the year you turn 60. Then you just throw all your money in that fund and it will be adjusted yearly based on short and long term risk.
If not, your manager should have plenty of documentation and allocation suggestions for the risk level you want to take.

so apparently you can sign up for electric orange now

if you log in and go to products, there should be a link to learn about electric orange if you're eligible.

it's a high interest bearing (3% vs. 0.75% for SECU) paperless checking account with no fees, ATM access, free billpay. Must be an ING direct member to use it. Going to sign up when I can't get the wife's account linked to mine. If you need a referral PM me.
