The Dispossessed by Ursula LeGuin (the most significant book I've read in the last year)The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery (I read it whenever I feel sad)Catcher in the Rye by JD SalingerCat's Cradle by Kurt VonnegutStarship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein (the movie...there aren't words for how completely unlike the book it was)The list could go on. Heinlein's my favorite author across the board....busy, busy, busy...[Edited on June 15, 2006 at 11:20 PM. Reason : LOTR goes without saying, though]

I have to admit to travesty and say that I got bored while reading LOTR but I'm not giving up. I do want to read it all.
6/15/2006 11:21:20 PM
I said that Moby Dick is my favorite book, however, Twain is my favorite author. ...but I guess thats not what the thread is asking.

meh ^ i like both. i think they have to be put into perspective as to when they were written and when youre living reading them perhaps
6/16/2006 12:21:28 AM
Ulysses.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower was a joke. Wasn't it published by that MTV company or something? In no way can it compare to Catcher in the Rye, with such great moments as:"Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody."
6/16/2006 12:30:02 PM
^ i love that
6/16/2006 12:32:44 PM
^^ Why the fuck does it matter who published it?
6/16/2006 12:36:12 PM

Sewer, Gas, and Electric: The Public Works Trilogy by Matt RuffCruel Shoes by Steve Martin
6/16/2006 12:43:30 PM
Come on. If MTV are the only people that will publish your book...that's just sad.Catcher in the Rye isn't even my favorite book. Just don't compare it with something like Perks.[Edited on June 16, 2006 at 12:48 PM. Reason : .]
6/16/2006 12:46:07 PM
mtv produced Election. whateva.
6/16/2006 12:47:30 PM
How do you know they were "the only people" who would publish his book?
6/16/2006 12:49:34 PM
classic favorite To Kill a Mockingbird hands downmy non-classic fave is Three Weeks With My Brother by Nicholas Sparks...it's his memoir that he wrote with help from his brother...flashbacks of them growing up, background of him getting started as an author and inspiration for his other books, with this three week trip spent travelling around the world with his brother (which is the only family he has left besides his wife and children) as the final centerpiece of the story. it was really moving...and i read it while travelling so that made it have another level of meaning for me.
6/16/2006 12:55:02 PM
If you were author, would MTV be the first place you would go? I'm willing to bet it was submitted to multiple publishers, like many books are, and MTV made an offer.[Edited on June 16, 2006 at 12:55 PM. Reason : a]
6/16/2006 12:55:08 PM
perhaps mtv pushed the most money/exposure at him
6/16/2006 1:02:05 PM
^^if you were an author, i'm gonna guess youwould be unpublished[Edited on June 16, 2006 at 1:02 PM. Reason : awef]
6/16/2006 1:02:10 PM
If I were an author, and I got an offer from, say, Little, Brown, and an offer from MTV, and they were both pretty much the same except MTV paid more, I would absolutely go with MTV. It's idiotic to care about that. As sarijoul has mentioned, they've produced at least one really good movie. [Edited on June 16, 2006 at 1:14 PM. Reason : ]
6/16/2006 1:03:55 PM
MTV might have offered more because they realized teenagers would buy the crap like crazy.Back to my original point...comparing a classic to something like Perks is hilarious. I think it's funny others will argue otherwise. And if I was an author, I don't see how I would be unpublished based on this thread.(Election was a good movie. I don't see how making a good movie translates into publishing though)[Edited on June 16, 2006 at 1:09 PM. Reason : a]

Your point?
6/16/2006 1:11:53 PM
6/16/2006 1:15:20 PM
Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein when she was 17 or 18.
6/16/2006 1:15:21 PM
6/16/2006 1:18:53 PM
Please explain to me, then, how, if MTV publishes a book, that is a sign that the book is bad.
6/16/2006 1:22:50 PM
I never said if they publish a book it will be "bad." I said that's sad.Have you read The Perks of Being a Wallflower?
6/16/2006 1:24:31 PM
Yes. I've also read The Catcher in the Rye.[Edited on June 16, 2006 at 1:26 PM. Reason : ]
6/16/2006 1:25:55 PM
Which one do you like better? Sorry if you posted it somewhere above...
6/16/2006 1:26:38 PM
How is his personal preference a reflection of anything other than his personal preference?[Edited on June 16, 2006 at 1:27 PM. Reason : e]
6/16/2006 1:27:18 PM
6/16/2006 1:28:07 PM
Again, what does it matter if someone's personal preference does not agree with yours?
6/16/2006 1:28:33 PM
Yeah, seriously.Honestly, I don't think about either all that much. I don't go around saying The Catcher in the Rye is my favorite book, mainly because I'm not fourteen. The Perks of Being a Wallflower was really good, too, but it's not the best book I've ever read. It really has nothing to do with the discussion at hand, which is why it's "sad" to get published by MTV.
6/16/2006 1:29:28 PM
Saying Perks is better than Catcher is like saying The Da Vinci code is the best book ever.Or George W. Bush is the best president ever. There's a point where personal preference can be hilarious.
6/16/2006 1:30:03 PM
Again, I have to ask. Who fucking cares? What if I said The Da Vinci Code is the best book ever? What difference does that make? If that's my personal preference, what difference is it to you? Maybe you don't listen to my book recommendations from now on, but so what?
6/16/2006 1:31:12 PM
Then I find that hilarious, and why should you care that I do.
6/16/2006 1:32:23 PM
I don't. You're the one making a big deal over someone stating their preference for one book over another.
6/16/2006 1:32:56 PM
The Godfather yo. I read that book in like half a day. Couldn't put that shit down.
6/16/2006 1:33:13 PM
^ that's a good one. I read it a couple weeks ago.
6/16/2006 1:33:47 PM
..and now you've been sucked into that, trying to make that point. I realize this thread is about favortie books. So I will stop. I'm already laughing hard enough for one day.
6/16/2006 1:34:17 PM
Been sucked into what?
6/16/2006 1:35:04 PM
6/16/2006 1:35:26 PM
Holy fuck guys. I'm still with spookyjon on this.
6/16/2006 2:36:05 PM

6/16/2006 3:07:53 PM
Just some dudes. They're a really small company.
6/16/2006 3:17:46 PM
If it's not on MTV I haven't heard of it.Oh wait, did they ever remix Kanye?
