I tip $1 or $2 max, you people are crazy.
6/13/2006 10:21:17 AM
I agree with the 1-2, especially if you are a regular. I must have tipped over $100 to her by now.
6/13/2006 12:31:23 PM
ah the joys of not cutting your hair for nearly 2 years!even before then i did it myself
6/13/2006 12:38:33 PM
this is what pisses me off, I thought when I went to a place to get my haircut, the amount they charged was for the service they were providing to cut my hair? What am I paying for, the ware and tare on the scissors and combs?I mean do you tip the person at the cash register who checks you out at the grocery store? They could dent your cans of peas and ruin your food, i mean wtf. The bill at a barber shop is for them to cut your hair right, so why would I tip them for cutting my hair?I mean if they throw in a hand-job or something like that I could see tipping, you are getting something extrathis is why i cut my own fucking hair i guess[Edited on June 13, 2006 at 12:44 PM. 2 bucks on a 12 dollar haircutand i still get irritated because that is too much to spend on 10 minutes of labor
6/13/2006 2:37:58 PM
i just bought my own and cut my own hair, i can keep it trimmed every 3 days and save a shitload of money with haircuts being 15 a pop
6/13/2006 3:14:38 PM
^^^^ so you don't tip anybody? tipping your barber makes sense to me if you are a repeat customer. if someone dents your cans or drops your food, oh well, get another at no charge. if someone messes up your haircut, you're stuck with it. tipping is just thanking them for not making you look dumb.

I go back to the same person every time and I feel like If I stiff them or don't tip the same amount each time they are gonna butcher me.
6/13/2006 11:18:22 PM
If the barber did a good job, I usually tip two dollars. This amount was confirmed as being appropriate--for barbers--by none other than Hank Hill in a _King of the Hill_ episode.Hair stylists in high-end salons, however, will likely expect more money. You may be looking at the standard fifteen percent, which is also appropriate for restaurant servers, at these establishments. By the way, I learned to tip haircutters from my then-fiancée some years ago. Until she told me, I had no idea that it was expected--unless your haircutter owns the shop. Then, it's your call.
6/13/2006 11:25:07 PM
see doesn't that suck though, that you have to tip out of fear? i mean that is pretty ridiculous to me, what are you paying for exactly?
6/13/2006 11:25:27 PM
See, sNuwPack, what's "ridiculous" is this baloney world you are describing that exists, I don't know, in your head? Then, there's the real world where people like to be valued when they perform well. Sometimes that value is expressed in a currency exchange--or an additional currency exchange. In these sorts of matters, fear is not an issue for me; I tip as a courtesy. If you don't want to tip, then don't. If I ever see you, however, I will probably recognize you--as the one with the accident-victim haircut. It's just a guess. . . .

do you tip a pilot after a good flight or a doctor? you never answered my questionum oh yea, i forgot something, STFU YOU GAY n00b[Edited on June 14, 2006 at 12:21 AM. Reason : sdfss]
6/14/2006 12:21:27 AM
So, you want me to answer your question, which I did, AND "STFU"? Which is it? Once again, you have some strange ideas--and your ad hominem attack, which is a logical fallacy, by the way, indicates weakness in YOUR argument. As to your "n00b" tripe, I may be new to TWW, but I've been on this planet longer than you have. And it appears that I'm more educated, too. Get some respect in your mouth, sNuwPack!
6/14/2006 12:38:35 AM
ahahahahaha are you trying to impress me by using the word fallacy? haha anyone who went through freshmen english can rattle off ad hominem; however, what's hilarious is that wasn't even a personal attack, it was just an obligatory n00b comment, I mean are you seriously gonna try to act like you win the debate bc you cried ad hominem foul via me calling you a n00b that is hilarious. So if you'd like to intelligently respond to my point then go aheadwow I'm so impressed you can rattle off standard fallaciesslipperly slope! I win If you're gonna come you gotta come a lot harder than that bitch, this is tww
6/14/2006 12:43:26 AM
Note well from my initial reply to your post, "I tip as a courtesy." My position seems quite clear to me, what more explanation do you need?Concerning your post about "impress[ing]" you, the thought had not crossed my mind. I was merely pointing out facts. And since you are allegedly SO knowledgeable and experienced, I'm sure you realize that a wise man once said, "Ignoring facts does not mean that those facts cease to exist." In addition, try a post without name-calling--if you can. I had not thought of this as a contest, but if it were, I'm sure that I would be winning. Now, shoo; I'm done with you.
6/14/2006 12:59:14 AM
my question was why not tip a doctor or pilot, it's certainly much more important that their services are administered well as opposed to a hairdresser^you came for the porn didn't you?[Edited on June 14, 2006 at 1:03 AM. Reason : sdfa]

Many everyday practices are established by tradition. Why bow as a greeting rather than shake hands? Tradition, of course, is the answer.I agree with you that we should continually examine customary practices. Otherwise, we might end up with the old we're-doing-it-this-way-because-we've-always-done-it-this-way approach. Voluntarily tipping one's server, whether it is haircuts or food, seems harmless enough to me. Can we not agree on that, at least? Signing off for tonight.
6/14/2006 1:12:11 AM
ok lata, and just a little heads up don't get bent out of shape over the hostility, it's just kinda how it works around here, a little debate mixed with a little belittlement, it's how we roletoo each his own on tipping I guess, but it just seems that everyone tips all these people just not to be an asshole, I mean tomorrow I'm going to start tipping the gas station attendent, in 10 years will you be an asshole if you don't?I just don't see where the line gets drawn, and I really don't mind if people tip or not, it's def your perogative, but it's when people get a sense of entitlement to a tip that really pisses me off (note I'm not including food servers/bartenders in this bc as I've said before I feel like I am paying for the food and liquid, not their service with the menu price, although their pay is certainly already factored into the price)/rant
6/14/2006 1:19:06 AM
Cool. Agreed.
6/14/2006 1:23:44 AM
6/14/2006 1:26:48 AM
oh it undoubtedly takes a lot more skill, but like I said I can justify tipping them bc I say "the bill is for the food/liquor," eventhough as I said I know that their service is included in the price of those items. However, it's really hard for me to rationalize what I'm paying for with a haircuit, I mean the whole bill is just for their service, I'm not gaining anything else from the experience, so I feel like whatever the charge is the amount their service is worth. I mean like I've said in like 100% of my last four posts, if you are going to use the argument that cutting hair is hard, it's certainly not harder than diagnosing an illness, filling a cavity, or flying a plane, yet we don't tip for doctors, dentists, or pilotsNow, you're probably going to say that we don't tip those professions bc they make way more than a hairdresser; however, also like I said before in this thread, the day that a haircut is as important as a safe flight, is the day the two professions salaries will be close in value, I don't see how tipping factors into that equation.I would really like someone to address the points I laid out in this post, not to be a jerk, but to seriously try to understand how other people view this differently.edit: do people who work at cost cutters or the like make a small % of the haircuit fee, or are they only paid an hourly wage? Because if they only get an hourly wage, than tipping makes sense, but if they also receive a % of the sale, allowing them to make more via higher volume, then I still stand by what I've said.[Edited on June 14, 2006 at 1:47 AM. (from earlier)
6/14/2006 2:02:14 AM
^see now I will tip if they spend some time advising me on a certain style, discussing possible looks etc....(pretend I'm a girl for a sec haha), but if they just do a standard run of the mill job, I don't see why they're entitled to it, but anyway, I've spent waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy too much time in this thread, I'm done now
6/14/2006 2:11:33 AM
you'd think there'd be a manlaw on this
6/14/2006 9:50:34 AM
my mother has always cut my hair so i never went to the barber until a couple months ago for the first time. I didn't tip because i didn't know any better. No one ever told me to tip my barber but i never asked. No one gave me any bad looks but a friend told me he always tips when he goes later that day so I felt kinda cheap. I think it isn't as important as tipping a waitress because that seems more obvious but maybe I am just used to free hair cuts.
6/14/2006 11:15:29 AM
i don't fuck with bullshit discount places... onetime I went to one instead of my regular barber shop and they fucked everything up
