it rivals baseballs excitement level^but not because of what you said. look how long it takes to score in football after the other team is in the redzone. more than 20 seconds[Edited on June 14, 2006 at 2:27 AM. Reason : gone in 60 seconds]
6/14/2006 2:26:09 AM
I still argue that if you aren't excited by a quality soccer game, you don't know what the fuck to look at.
6/14/2006 2:27:51 AM
6/14/2006 3:33:24 AM
^^what do you look at? The guys short shorts?
6/14/2006 6:33:18 AM
If you're watching a game from 1982, maybe.Otherwise, you watch the ebb and flow of the action. You watch runners from midfield go on short, overlapping runs, trying to draw defenders. You watch the back four pull up together, catching a forward offside when the attack becomes overwhelming. You watch the wingers cheat to the inside of the field, falling into the space between the strikers and the withdrawn midfielder as the fullbacks push up the sides.Stuff like that.
6/14/2006 7:53:18 AM
get rid of the goaliesseriouslyin soccer and hockeycause if you dontyour sports will never be shit to mainstream america
6/14/2006 11:24:13 AM
THE GOALIES ARE THE BEST PART YOU LOON
6/14/2006 11:31:20 AM
no wonder you dont understand why the ratings are so low
6/14/2006 11:32:51 AM
No, I understand. I understand that Americans don't know what to do if the play doesn't stop and start over every ten seconds.
6/14/2006 11:43:07 AM
yeah like basketball, americans dont understand basketball, they stop play every 10 seconds in basketball, i've never seen where they play 5 straight minutes in basketball...by the way soccer never stops play...they never kick it out of bounds and stop play...that never happens
6/14/2006 11:43:54 AM
You don't have to have a stoppage or a whistle for a strategic or formative reset. Don't be dense.Anyway, the goaltender is so philosophically attractive as a person. He's not as powerful in soccer, but a hockey goaltender can just decide that he's going to win a game himself. Granted, he'll need a teammate to score one goal, but one is all you need.[Edited on June 14, 2006 at 11:57 AM. Reason : d]
6/14/2006 11:52:48 AM
ok i wont be so dense
6/14/2006 11:59:06 AM
I don't inherently have a problem with soccer, all i know is that i have a deep seeded feeling of being robbed of a few hours of my life when i watch a soccer game, only to have it end in a 0-0 tie. Sure they go at it full speed for a legnthly period of time, but sometimes, its so non eventful, its hard for it to keep my attention.
6/14/2006 12:05:15 PM
Let's get this straight, soccer does not need to change its rules to become more popular. It is already the most popular sport in the world.
6/14/2006 12:42:54 PM
This has been covered a BILLION times, but anyone who automatically relates the amount of scoring to the amount of excitement is an idiot. It's scoring CHANCES that are exciting, not scores.
6/14/2006 12:46:13 PM
I'd be willing to wager that Americans have more refined tastes than the rest of the world
6/14/2006 12:46:15 PM
6/14/2006 12:51:31 PM
6/14/2006 1:00:30 PM
they should do power plays, like hockey.
6/14/2006 1:01:42 PM
6/14/2006 1:13:43 PM
That argument would be fine if it was ONLY popular because of Africa and some of South America but a lot of countries in Europe are just as wealthy/educated or more so..
6/14/2006 1:16:37 PM
Soccer is not going to become too much more popular in the US obviously. Americans like hard hits, fast paced action, and lots of scoring. Soccer doesn't deliver there. My point is, most Americans don't care too much about soccer, and that should be fine with everyone. There's no problem here. There would be a problem with soccer without goalies though. No one would watch that, American or not.
6/14/2006 1:34:05 PM
6/14/2006 1:58:41 PM
^No. Some things would be so incredibly pointless that not even high-scoring could draw in Americans.
6/14/2006 2:04:05 PM
incredibly pointless?i think plenty of americans could look at it from the perspective of "basketball doesnt have someone constantly guarding the goal, there are higher scores"i mean the field is a lot longer but i think getting rid of the goalies would be far from incredibly pointlessi mean how many shots on goal are deflected by goaltenders versus the number of shots deflected by other defenders or by the goalpost?
6/14/2006 2:07:53 PM
maybe they should just do like football and make each goal worth 7 pointsisnt a 14-7 football game the same as a 2-1 soccer game??
6/14/2006 2:08:26 PM
yeah, but then what about field goals, PATs, 2 pt conversions, and safeties?soccer fans need to realize that the reason why football is so exciting is that there is more than one way to put points on the boardsame thing with basketball- just look at how the 3 pt shot has changed the way the game is playedi mean i love lacrosse more than any other sport, but the fact that it's high scoring doesn't mean that it's always exciting to watch.
6/14/2006 2:33:18 PM
i mean i love football and only somewhat enjoy socceri was just trying to play devil's advocate about the low scoring of soccer vs football, whent they actually score about the same.and i think we can all agree that PAT's can be thrown out in terms of interest and FG's are only exciting if they are near the end of a close game.
6/14/2006 2:41:50 PM
i disagreejust look at the USC/Texas game last year when extra points and field goals were missed...special teams in football make the game even more exciting
6/14/2006 2:49:16 PM
well obviously the outcome of a missed PAT or FG can later add to the excitement of a gamebut considering that kickers make 99% of PAT's i dont think there is a more tedious process in sports. it obviously isnt a complete gimme, but it isnt exicting at all. And FG's only occasionally cause excitement, usually they only cause a light rustle.
6/14/2006 2:54:25 PM
6/14/2006 3:14:09 PM
the one thing that i think americans would love is bigger goals, much bigger goalsthen you'd have alot more scoringbut still ya'll would be missing out on the beautiful game if all it is is scoring
6/14/2006 3:48:50 PM
Entirely too many close minded morons gathered in one thread. Nearly as bad as soap box.
6/14/2006 3:51:40 PM
id much rather watch continuous action as opposed to stopping the action so often. thats why i cant watch baseball or football for too long. not to mention, there are no tv timeouts in soccer.
