yes, it's aftermarket, but i've cleaned it the same way 7 or 8 times, so i'm pretty sure that's not the prob.

^ yes, maf = mass air flow sensor... take into consideration that oil can deposit over time...... also take into consideration that these are just suggestions.... finally take into consideratoin that we are probably nerds who have nothing better to do, so we go online and try to act all macho with our "automobile mechanic" skillz/knowledge[Edited on June 8, 2006 at 4:12 PM. ive considered all that, but with the plethera of suggestions, someone is bound to be right...even a blind squirrel will find a nut eventually. And, i've learned a few things so all is not lost.

fuel trims are off for both banks.. since it's throwing two codes, i'm guessing there's a pre-cat o2 for each bank (for fuel trims)the maf measures air going into the engine. if that reading is fucked up, it will throw off fuel trims for the whole engine (read: both banks). if it's an o2 sensor, it would only be for one.that, along with the fact that you recently "cleaned" your intake, i'm guessing the maf. all it takes is one heavy oiling to screw up the maf. i'm assuming it's a k&n or similar style oiled gauze filter.i pm'd a buddy of mine who is a ford mechanic (fordhack) and told him to read this thread.. he may be able to help or at least point you in the right direction for diagnosis.[Edited on June 8, 2006 at 4:21 PM. which sensor did you change? pre or post cat?if it's the one after the cat, you got hosed. it wouldnt throw those codes. it would be p0420 (i think) - cat efficiency below threshold

i doubt they ripped me off on purpose (if at all), my uncle is the manager of the shop, but at this point, who knows. they, and 2 different advance guys said that all indications (the indicated codes) point to two O2 sensors (they said the one at the intake, may have been refering to the maf?, and one at the cat). My uncle said that both may be bad but they were going to try 1 first to avoid replacing something i didn't need to replace. well, that didn't work, so here i am. (i would go back there, but i'm in Raleigh, and he is in Hickory).

it could have been the pre-cat ones.. which makes sense.. but you had that replaced and still have codes...

exactly how many O2 sensors are likely on the truck? I was under the impression that there was one at the cat (before or after...?) and one @ the intake.

If you had the 02 sensor/s replaced and the code came back the O2 was definitely not the problem. Easiest way to figure this out is to datalog(requires obd2 compatible diagnostic equipment) the maf and O2 readings. If the maf is still good the upper intake gaskets could be leaking or possibly a loose, cracked vacuum line as mentioned earlier. Since you don't have access to this I would try the method suggested by 69. P0171 and 174 codes together are most commonly a vacuum leak of some sort.

^^ thank you, someone finally pays attention to melet me explain, those engines are notorious for vacuum leaks, if there is a vacuum leak, all the air going into the engine doesn't pass through the maf, so the computer adjusts the fuel trim for less air than is actually going into the engine, leading to a lean conditionit definately has nothing to do with the O2 sensors, it has to be the MAF or a leak, and leaks are cheap to fixit could even be the aftermarket filter throwing off the air flow calibration[Edited on June 11, 2006 at 12:16 PM. oh yeah chances are the coating from the intake got sucked on to themaf and fucked it up. thats what it sounds like to me.

is there an oxygen sensor at the intake in addition to the maf, or is it just the maf? how hard is it to change the maf? is it a unplug....plug type deal, or is there more to it?[Edited on June 12, 2006 at 3:36 PM. Reason : .]

update: So after a few weeks of bs (I've talked to about a dozen mechanics, and actually taken my truck to several and I was getting different solutions, none of which worked) i talked to a guy @ a garage today who said there was a service bulletin about my problem and model. I called capitol ford and they said that the service bulletin says that putting gas in multiple times w/o filling up was the reason for the light coming on. I am almost empty, and i'm going to fill up today, so i should know in a few days if that was, in fact, the prob. Half of me would be happy that the problem is that simple, but i can't help but be pissed if this is the problem, b/c i've went through a few weeks of shit and wasted about $150 to fix problems that weren't there.
