still doesn't make senseWhat does that have to do with price?
6/9/2006 11:34:17 AM
What's the target market for a BMW?

compared to the price you can get on a macbook pro with the educational discount? yes, i would consider the dell price equivalent to be "barebones"
6/9/2006 11:48:59 AM
I guess a loaded $1200 Inspiron Dual Core is "barebones"
6/9/2006 11:50:38 AM
i guess you're just talking out of your ass until you can actually list some specs, prices, and links

I hope you know that Steve Jobs was a hippie most of his life and started out as a Hare Rama Hare Krishna devotee in India.

first of all, it's a 17" display...as mentioned a dozen times before, very few people would consider that equivalent to a 15.4" and smaller...not because it's superior, but because it's a freakin' desktop that you take with you on occasion...i don't there are a lot of people on here who would consider the huge screen an advantage (i consider it a liability because it significantly lowers your battery life and significantly increases your weight)
6/9/2006 12:05:59 PM
That argument is so stupid.Anywayok compare the 15 inch priceTHERE'S NO FUCKING WAY YOU'RE GONNA TELL ME A TOSHIBA IS CHEAPER THAN A DELLNOT TO MENTION THAT I HAVE HAD TOSHIBAS BEFORE AND THEY HAVE POOR QUALITY
6/9/2006 12:07:01 PM
actually, i AM going to tell you that a.) with toshiba you can get a better machine for the same or less amount of money and b.) i've delt with ALMOST nothing but toshibas over the past year and they are far from "poor quality" (though i have admitted that in the past, i would have ranked them as low in physical quality)i have had specific bad luck with hp/compaq (a plethora of issues)...our only thinkpad (which is, granted, over a year old) is having trouble with the screen blacking out when you move itconfigured e1405 = $1460 after shippinghttp://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=E1405RFC1&s=dhsconfigured e1505 = $1470 after shippinghttp://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=E1505RFC1&s=dhsi don't know what the student discount is, but both of these are heavier than the toshiba i listed, the t60, or the macbook pro[Edited on June 9, 2006 at 12:25 PM. Toshiba's are good machines. They are not configurable, which is the major drawback. You get what you buy, and that's that. I'm typing from one right now, and it's been a great laptop for the past 4 years.Quagmire: You missed the point again. Who gives a flying shit what YOU "need" or "want".As for this bit of idiocy

^^ I think he was referring to the original purpose of this thread "Macbook Pro vs IBM T60" and possibly thinking back to those old clamshell ibooks with the fruity colors?
6/9/2006 7:41:07 PM
but he spoke of the apocalypse
6/9/2006 7:47:53 PM
I did indeed speak of the apocalypse - I used a technique known as hyperbole.hyperbole (n) - A figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect
6/9/2006 11:58:22 PM
Hyperbole is not a technique, it is rather a figure of speech. You never utilized a technique in that sentence structure.

Went and saw the new macbook for the first time today. Shit burned my hands it was so hot.
6/10/2006 8:59:09 PM
I think there's a fix for that, but yeah the t60's with the same basic configurations are cool to the touch after being on for hours.
6/24/2006 7:59:45 PM
While the new MacBook Pro seems appealing, I've found it best to avoid buying a first generation product. Apple is still working the bugs out (monitor hinge problems, battery and heat dissipation issues, etc.). The Thinkpad series is very mature in contrast and still retains the highest build quality of any laptop manufacturer. I've used my Thinkpad T40p (purchased via the NCSU Bookstore) for the past three years and have been quite pleased.
6/25/2006 12:50:37 PM
i have a powerbook, and it gets EXTREMELY hot, sometimes so hot (when im running cpu intensive things) that i can't hold it on my lap. i still love it though
6/25/2006 1:06:16 PM
I owned a 17" PowerBook G4, and after awhile it got very hot. I have a Dell i9300 17" now and it gets quite hot after extended usage. I've yet to find a laptop w/ the specs I want that didn't end up "hot" after 30-1hr. of usage...I just accept it and get on with it.And I agree w/ not buying 1st gen...I may get a MacBook Pro within a year, but it'll be at least the 2nd revision. Primary reason for me is cashflow.
6/25/2006 1:16:06 PM
^ come feel the bottoms of the laptops we have on display at the bookstore. Core duo t60's with all the powersaving settings turned off. we keep them on all day too and they're constantly used by customers. they barely even get warm.
6/25/2006 1:47:13 PM
I have a Dell and it gets hot only when I keep it on a comforter.
6/25/2006 1:57:13 PM
Yeah, the macbook overheating is a design flaw on apple's part, and not a natural consequence of the performance related parts.
6/25/2006 2:14:36 PM
just bought my MacbookPro today at Crabtree. got the 15" w/ my student discount and got $200 off, a free Ipod Nano, and a free printer. and wouldn't you know the first website i went to was TWW.i had no idea how bad i was going to miss my right click button...
6/26/2006 12:23:59 AM
Good luck using the same Microsoft productivity softwaresansthe entertainment and the games, albeit.
6/26/2006 1:00:48 AM
^^Just get a two-button mouse. Trackpads are terrible on all brands.
6/26/2006 12:13:05 PM
if you can handle the small size, the Microsoft wireless notebook mice aren't bad...http://tinyurl.com/j2dxf

I think the new MacBooks have two-finger right-clicking. Just like you put 2 fingers on the trackpad to scroll, if you click with 2 fingers on it, it right-clicks.
6/26/2006 1:50:07 PM
There's an app out there that will let you program the trackpad gestures however you like.
6/26/2006 2:15:25 PM
^^i tried that and it didn't workall im trying to do is delete a song on itunes, normally you can just right click and hit "delete" but nothing will do that. i've tried every button on the keyboard. what a terrible design. im also pissed that there's no "delete" button either. the "delete" button on this computer just does what the "backspace" button does on a regular computer.[Edited on June 26, 2006 at 2:38 PM. 6/26/2006 2:38:12 PM
It's a notebook keypad, not an extended keyboard. These issues that you seem to be having such a problem with should have been immediately obvious prior to purchasing. Either adapt, or quit your bitching.
6/26/2006 2:47:11 PM
You realize that you can control-click right? Also, I think the 2-finger thing I was talking about might have been from a third party app (also try the trackpad preferences). Also, in iTunes, option-delete will delete a song from itunes and the respective file, fn-delete or shift-delete usually mimics the "del" key you're use to.
6/26/2006 5:07:19 PM
theres no fucking way you're defending the one mouse button.
6/26/2006 5:17:08 PM
Except that he knew before he bought it that there was only one button and now he's crying.
