timing chain rubbing front cover

BIG DOLLA. You gotta take the front timing cover off, which involves taking the crank pulley off...I can't remember if you have to drop the oil pan; seems like it's sloped so you don't have to.

You also have to take off the valve cover so's you can get to the cam gear and whatnot.

The chain runs on the cam and crank sprockets (obviously), but also runs between two guides: a straight one on the driver's side and a curved one on the passenger's side. There is also a tensioner shoe down below the curved guide that tightens with oil pressure.

The chain will rub through the guide eventually and start slapping the inside of the timing cover, which, incidentally, is also the water pump housing. Next thing you know, you got a block full of coolant.

I finally got around to checking out the timing chain guides and such. They appear to be in tact and the chain feels good and tight. What else could be producing my mystery noise? Should I take it to the Toyota store?

well I don't want to cause any fatal damage besides a tow bill is too expensive and inconvenient. what is the possibility that this thing has been rebuilt and the pistons have some slop because they are too small?

I have an 88' 22RE 4 runner and mine had that ticking sound for about 6 months before it died. It was louder at initial start-up like after it had sat all night, then it got quieter. Long story short, I spun 3 rod bearings and almost lost my main bearings. I am currently in re-build process. But it could be that you just need to re-adjust your valve clearances which is what I would try first.

My noise is only there after it warms up. If I rev it, between gears, or keeping a constant speed. I already readjusted the valves. I guess I am going to take it to the Toyota store. Nobody seems to know what to do.

i just went and looked at one thats an 89

the guy claims the noise i was hearing was from a crankshaft bearing needing replacing...I dont know what would make it sound like that

in addition there was like a gummy substance in the radiator...but oil wouldnt be there would it? it was like a cream color...and slick to the touch...not sure if its worth the money or not...anyone know what the bangin might be? it was LOUD though not just a tick...maybe a head gaskin gone bad?

Well my noise has turned in to a catastrophy. I drove my truck to Kinston on Thursday. I went today to drive it back and got about 20 miles. Then all hell broke loose. I don't know what is going on, but it ain't good. I am going to trailer her back tomorrow and tear in to it. I am guessing my initial noise was a bad rod bearing or something and it has completely lost it. Idk...but it sucks. She won't run about 1k rpm before it's banging like hell.

Problem fixed. Number 4 rod bearing was about worn through. Now all noises are gone.
