I downshift (ie engine brake) all the time. If you rev match, thats not engine braking, thats racin shit. Im not hard on the clutch otherwise and they put a beefy clutch in my car so fuck it...

not rev matching is fairly hard on the clutch[Edited on April 19, 2006 at 3:11 PM. Reason : you can rev match and engine brake, they really dont have anything to do with each other]

ok well you fucks are gonna be spending big bucks on trans and clutch shit.why not just use the brakes?

^spending big bucks? thats a matter of opinioncompared to what you would spend to rebuild an automatic, a manual is peanuts. Unless maybe if you are going for some racing shit.

sir, are you reading something else.what costs more.brake pads or clutch/trans internals????

seriously though, unless you're drivin like an idiot, downshifting and all isnt going to hurt the tranny/clutch that much, yeah it adds wear and shortens the life of it and all, but not drastically unless your clutch is a piece of shit, or you have mad power. I do it mostly out of habit, but i never really tach it up more than may be 3k or so when i do it...

I actually double clutch my downshifts usually because 1) it goes into gear a lot easier b/c mazda transmissions are notchy as hell, especially with a short shifter 2) my tranny has 154k miles on it, doesn't grind any gears, and I'd like to keep it that way

^ I gotta agree with Ray on this one. It's a fuck of a lot easier to replace a clutch than it is to rebuild a tranny (I've done manual gearboxes ranging from fwd shitbox to New Process 545). And it's usually quite a bit cheaper as well.
