You going to replace the ho with this? Do you need to drive around for work still?

I vote M5.

Lets see, where to start.... Ok, OK, I don't know how to be any clearer about this:

THE M5 IS A FAT GIRL, SHE WEIGHS 4000 LBS. 4000 LBS = FAT GIRL. OK, lets not talk about that anymore.

The e30 M3 is king, but sadly, not on this list.

Get the e46. You will be extremly happy each and every day. If you can't stand the idea of a 2 door, then go with the current S4 (although that might be tough for 30k). BMW makes a "performance package" 4 door 330, that is a pretty hot ride and they coaxed more power out of the 3.0L too.

And sumfoo1 pretty much took care of the AWD/RWD argument. Now who wants to argue FWD / RWD!?!?

no he didn't. he stated his opinion, which is wrong as usual. ALL THINGS EQUAL, AWD WILL ALWAYS BE BETTER. if you can't understand that, you need a lesson in basic physics.
Quote :

who cares? did you fail to read the title of the thread? he wants a fun DD, not a track car. quit calling it a fat girl, that's just weird.

FWIW, BMW has announced they will be making a 4dr version of the E90 M3.

The e30m3 was an awesome track car for its day, but to say it's "king" is just silly. The drawbacks relative to modern competition are pretty obvious... underpowered, small brakes, small tires, etc etc etc.

I remember Fifth gear doing a competition between the Lancia Integrale and an E30m3, in which the M3 was beat on a road course by the Integrale. A fucking rally car beating your 'king' on a road course.

It's heritage cannot be denied, and I love e30s as much as anyone on here, but be realistic.

All things will never be equal in the AWD / RWD arguement simply due to the laws of physics. AWD will ALWAYS be heavier because of the mechanics assoicated with putting power to all 4 tires. Also, AWD presents FAR more complicated vehical dynamics both for the engineer and the driver.

I don't know how much time you have spent racing but....

Trying to put down power in a AWD car will simply result BOTH ends moving. So you will have a throttle on push in the front and throttle on oversteer in the rear. If you try and counter steer in that situation, the front will quickly snap towards the outside while the rear is still sliding out and off the road you go.

In a RWD situation, simply countersteer will allow continual power from the rear while correcting the oversteer and fast safe exit from a turn. Here is a good video of a Supra that lapped road Atlanta just 3 seconds slower than the Speed GT World Challenge Corvettes. Watch the drivers hands.

So, out of curiosity, what does BigBlueRam allude to? I suspect that you are refering to a large blue Dodge Ram with a diesel and 4wd.

Oh and the M5 is fat anyway you cut it, and FAT is the ultimate enemy to any car that is to be driven fast. Read the Road and Track where the creater of the McLauren F1 reviews the Veryon if you doubt my opinion

I've been in an M5 on a track, with 4 passengers and a driver drifting the shit out of it. Nothing about that experience sucked. I've also driven one on the street. It felt a lot lighter than I expected it to and has plenty of power and very nice handling. The car isn't a pure sports car, but it would do well on a track I'm sure. Not to mention this guy isn't trying to buy a car to race or some shit, he said DAILY DRIVER, more specifically a 4-door dd.

Out of the cars he listed I'd be willing to bet it's the fastest by a good bit. Not to mention it will probably handle with any of the other cars. Plus, it's an M5....

yep, that's correct... awd will always be superior. do you understand how stupid your argument is? it's like saying fwd is better than rwd.
Quote :

i can agree with that. doesn't change the fact awd is better.
Quote :

i don't feel like i need to qualify myself, but yes i've dabbled in about every form of motorsports out there. a few track days/auto-x's included.

wtf? sure, if you don't know what you're doing that can happen. if you know how to drive an awd car, what inputs to give, etc. it's going to reward you with superior handling.
Quote :

yep, almost any idiot can drive a rwd car and be somewhat fast. it is a much easier and forgiving layout/design, i give you that.
Quote :

haha, 3 seconds is a lifetime. that supra likely has equal hp to the gt cars, if not more depending on the exact setup.

what aren't you understanding here? this is going to be a DD NOT a track car. besides, the 5 is still very respectabley quick for the weight. for what it is, 3900-4000 isn't bad at all.

AWD cars kick ass if you know how to drive 'em. Most people try to drive 'em like a RWD car, which, supprisingly, dosen't work.....

i have to agree with BBR.

he asked about a DD and you're talking handling and the edge of traction, oversteer/understeer, vehicle dynamics, etc.

how many ppl would really get into a situation daily driving where this will matter? hopefully none (unless they're driving like an idiot)

so stfu already about how rwd is faster around a track.. nobody cares and its irrelavent to the topic at hand.

In that case, I absolutly drive like an idiot on a daily basis. In fact, I can't think of day in recent history that I didn't make my daily driver push. It all about timing and location though, not just anywhere. I purposly seek out isolated low traffic roads with great curves.

I guess that is what I was assuming out of everyone posting here. I guess I shouldn't have been though because, as of late, it seems like I've been getting that response a great deal.

you can't just say all things being equal.... blah blah blah

it depends on power weight and the size of the car and tires. you'd have to be retarded to think an exige would be faster with 300-500lbs more shit tossed in it. or even w/o including the weight it would add.. you'd bog down a motor that NEEDS to spin the tires for a fast launch.

a car setup right w/<500hp will be slower as an awd car around a track or in top speed
in real car situations because you add 500 lbs the car didn't need.
you also add another 5-12% drive train loss you wouldn't have had
you also add the fact your front wheels have less lateral grip to rotate the car in a turn
because some of it is going to acceleration forces.

doh... i broke the rules.

Quote :
"you can't just say all things being equal"

why not? that's the only way to ACCURATELY compare anything. sure, in the real world it's highly unlikely you'll find an awd car and a rwd car that are nearly identical in their basic qualitys. i bet you can come pretty damn close with some research though. if you stray away from comparing similar vehicles, you get into way too many variables.

i mean seriously, do you people lack comprehension of basic concepts? or are you so dense and ignorant you can't think past comparing a wrx to a corvette or some shit?

I WILL SAY THIS FOR THE LAST FUCKING TIME. AWD PWNS RWD IN ANY SITUATION. it's very simple if you leave out all of your idiotic comments about it weighs more, if you have more hp, etc. now stfu.

yeah, you're not supposed to have wheel spin in a AWD car....that's sorda the point...Instead of wasting power on wheelspin on a launch or in the curves, you have shitloads of grip. Contrary to popular belief, it's not faster to "drift" around a corner in most situations....

lol, quality entertainment here!

okay the comparison could be easily done for awd vs rwd. Take two stock BMW 325's. One a 325i and one a 325ix.

And i'm pretty sure most AWD systems don't add 500lbs to the weight of a car. I thought more around 3-400.

Oh, and for the answer regarding this thread. Get a M5 with an extended warranty. ITS A Luxury midsized car. OF COURSE IT'LL WEIGH AROUND 4000LBS. Still has 400hp though

not really, you've got the weight issue. that's about as close as you're going to get "real world" though. this isn't a comparison of cars though, drive systems only.
Quote :

you would be correct. using your example, the 325/330 i/xi's only differ by ~200lbs iirc.
