thats right, Providencei am not trying to say that Barnes' job at Clemson was not good; it was outstandingbut i would say that if he came here we would experience similar success as with Herb and like others have said he has underperformed at Texas based on the expectations of people on this boardhe has made some sweet 16's and a final four; ive read numerous times that herb has to win a national title or have a "magical run" for him to be successful

everybody's goal is a championshipwith some teams its a lot more realistic (ie UConn, Duke)but right now...on march 14, 2006...the 64/65 play-in game is tonightyou want to be in the ncaa tourneythats where we arewe have the same opportunity to win 6 straight games as the other 63 teams (after play-in game)you wanna bitch about our 10 seed? ok we'd all like to get a better seedbut a high seed doesnt guarantee shitright now, we are in a better position than the 200 and some odd teams that didnt make the ncaa tourneyonce you get into the tourney, anything is possiblein case you didnt notice, our season is not over yet]
3/14/2006 4:24:29 PM
It guarantees that the team that sports it probably didn't get blown out of their conference tournament by the last placed seed. Just sayin...
3/14/2006 4:26:05 PM
Our previous two titles actually came from two of the hardest routes any team has ever had to play on the way through. In '74, though, we did at least have home-court advantage.[Edited on March 14, 2006 at 4:26 PM. Reason : ]

i think we were an #8 seed when we won in 83and i dont care if you like or dislike herbhe had a point when he said that a team can finish the regular season / conference tourney strong but that doesnt guarantee you get out of the first round of the ncaa'syou guys act like since we've lost 4 straight its impossible to win again this yearmomentum is overrated...its all about getting your guys fired up one game at a time for 6 games in march and aprilall it takes is a few good 3 point shooting nights and BAM, we're a couple rounds deep

First off, no coach is going to have a .500 record against Duke or UNC over a 5 year span, period, unless some phenomenon happens, most knowledgeable fans no this (now I know K has owned UNC lately, I'm excluding K and Roy head to head). That said, what was Barnes record against Duke? What's our record against Duke over the last nine seasons? K was out for a season in the Barnes era, but that doesn't hold water if you think Sendek's wins' over UNC do hold water. Why, because they were 8-20, the 97 win was the only thing to boast about, oh and beating a team starting three freshman is great too I guess. Guess what Barnes, along with nearly every other coach in the league, would have swept them too. Barnes had zero talent at Clemson when he got there, UNC had 4 NBA all stars, and others who are on active rosters. Hell, in the 03-04 season, EVERY coach in the ACC beat UNC except one, guess who? But Barnes ain't going anywhere. Take a pay cut to have a for sure 2, likely 3, and sometimes 4 L's already chalked up before the season even starts from only two teams? And our fans display in public towards our coach, ouch, it's ok to voice displeasure but not like we do. I'd stay at the most athletically dominant school in div. 1 too if I were Barnes.

NC State can make the elite 8 this year. Beat Cal, beat a streaky Texas team, and then get Iowa or WVU in the sweet 16, either way i would say we have more talent than both of those teamsif we played duke in the elite 8 we definitely have a chance but duke, if they get that far, will be extremely focused under coach k of getting to the final four and winning it all and they would be a very tough out but we should have beat them at cameron so it is doable

you can do anything with statisticslike point out that Rick Barnes is 0.091% against UNC

I'm not sure if people relaize this, but the cinderella stories (higher than 8 seeds) of winning it all are done. Expanding the field to 64 did that. Sweet 16 cinderellas are still fun, but are not that serious of a deal if you ask me.
3/14/2006 4:49:44 PM
yeah you're right, because in 1983 there weren't 64 teams in the tournament

4/4/2006 10:28:50 AM
It doesnt really matter to me who they get at this point... just as long as we secure our recruits and play something other than the modified P... Its going to be weird without Herb on the sideline
4/4/2006 10:29:25 AM
NO sane person can argue that Barnes isn't a superior coach to Herb. No one.
4/4/2006 10:46:23 AM
herb? who's that? its not our coach...neither is barnes]
4/4/2006 10:46:48 AM
4/4/2006 10:50:01 AM
yeah cause texas has traditionally been a basketball powerhouse]
4/4/2006 10:50:52 AM
Texas definitely isn't an historical basketball powerhouse...makes Barnes' accomplishments there all the more impressive.
4/4/2006 10:53:49 AM
well to play devil's advocate to my first post and the point of this thread, Barnes also had Clemson ranked in the top 5...not too shabby either...and Clemson is a much worse program than Texas...not just now...always...I bet you a million dollars Texas has won at least one game at every Big 12 school's home court...unlike Clemson

I think the argument for 5 straight ncaa appearances is really stupid. I mean if you have a decent named school as we do, You are going to get a better look. I mean honestly, we really had maybe 1 or 2 good wins all year. We actually beat no one in the tournement higher than a 7 seed (Cal and Alabama). If you win 20 games and win one game in the ACC tourney, then you are going to get in the dance. Its not that hard.
4/4/2006 12:42:19 PM
^ for the record, we also beat George Washington and BC, both higher than 7 seeds.
4/4/2006 12:44:28 PM
oops forgot about BC...but we beat BC when they were in a major slump and G.W. was an 8 seed
4/4/2006 12:45:25 PM
was GW an 8 seed? My bad.
4/4/2006 12:47:13 PM
anybody know or care to figure out which coaches in the last 20 years have had the best records against UNC and/or Duke?
4/4/2006 12:58:17 PM
4/4/2006 1:00:24 PM
FIRE BARNES!somebody get the web address ready!I'm wearing Black to the Red/White game to show my displeasure!
4/4/2006 1:01:56 PM
4/4/2006 1:03:28 PM
two of the teams that have NOT made 5 straight ncaa tournament appearances as of this past season are UNC and Maryland...I would definitely take missing the tourney one of those years if it means a national championship like they got
4/4/2006 2:22:32 PM
didn't a couple of Texas' players sit out of the Duke game with injuries? Aldridge? Paulino? Gibson?
4/4/2006 5:24:29 PM
no
4/4/2006 5:30:53 PM
if yall get barnes, you'll get an excellent recruiter (although he's helped a lot being in texas) and a marginal bench coach. he's aided by his weak conference and shouldn't be looked at as the savior
4/4/2006 5:33:55 PM
Buckman sat out most of the Duke game for some reason
