"Catholic Fasting"

I learned that this particular term means the fasting you do before taking the Eucharist, which has changed since Vatican II. But I'm sure there are other meanings and whatever.

But Lent fasting can be whatever the person wants it to be(as advised by their priest) if they are not in the clergy. My Lent sacrifice stems from the teachings I've learned and what was recommend to me by my priest. There are other concessions being made for the day, like for water, so it's not total fasting.

when i was 16 i was going thru a 'religious' phase, so i gave up meat for Lent and haven't eaten red meat, pork, or poultry since.

i gave up seafood when i got to college and realized how awful Fountain's selection was.

after that Lent i gave up the religion but still haven't eaten the meat.

"holy shit. 16 cans a day???? was that a misprint?"

No misprint-that's correct. I drink it with EVERYTHING. Luckily, I have high metabolism and drinking that many calories doesn't show but I know it's horrible for my stomach lining and I have had some stomach problems due to it. It's not going to easy or fun to give it up.

It's certainly going to show within the next 5 or 6 years...It's funny to see how no one responded to FroshKiller, he always seemed to have his finger on peoples' buttons. Thanks for the shout-out cyrion. Is that thing still up?

Here's a good article on Ash Wednesday and fasting:

http://www.americancatholic.org/Messenger/Mar2003/Family.asp

Quote :
"Ash Wednesday is also a day of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. According to Church law, Catholics older than the age of 14 are supposed to abstain from meat. In addition, those between the ages of 18 and 59, not including pregnant or nursing mothers, should eat only one full meal. Smaller amounts of food—not as much as a full meal—may be eaten in the morning and either at lunchtime or dinner, depending on when you eat your full meal."

I'm Episcopal not Catholic, but we (well some of us) do the fasting/ Ash Wednesday/ Lent, etc

To get back to the original question (which seems to have been side-tracked by, among other things, some snide comments about those who observe these traditions):

cheese and chocolate

Technically, Sundays aren't days of Lent so you wouldn't be breaking rules. I used to use it as an excuse but it really defeats the purpose.

no, it doesn't actually defeat the purpose...it's part of the purpose:

Sunday's are Feast days because they always symbolize the day of Christ's resurrection
(like for some practitioners, Fridays are fast days because Christ died on a Friday--how that becomes fish is the only meat some eat on Fridays, I'm less certain).

I'm also giving up tww for lent

The rules:

Fasting - one light meal
Abstinence - no meat

We fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. We abstain on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. (As a Traditional Latin Rite Catholic, I abstain on all Fridays, Lent or not.)

The traditional Lenten fast pertains to every day of Lent from Ash Wednesday until Easter, except Sundays, for those over 21 and under 59 years of age. The fast allows one large meal with meat and two small meals without. Between meals no solid food is permitted. Complete
abstinence from meat pertains to those over age 7 on Ash Wednesday and, of course, on Fridays.

Our Lenten sacrifice is something we give up all through Lent, though technically it is permissible to have on Sundays the thing you've given up for Lent - the theology being that Sunday is a day of feast. I however maintain the fast on Sundays.

St. Raphael's on Falls of the Neuse in North Raleigh. 7am, 9am and 7pm Masses.

My old Methodist Church is having an Ash Wednesday service in the evening as well, and I believe it's at 7pm. Millbrook Methodist Church, on the corner of Old Wake Forest and Millbrook Rd.
