i have a ticket for 74 in a 55 in virginia. i've done some research and virginia has a defective speedometer defense where you submit a letter from a certified mechanic saying your speedometer was off and chances are it gets dropped to improper equipment.where can i find someone to check the speedometer? i am thinking a radar test, dyno, or time trial test. i called triple A and called a few shops, but they said they didn't have a dyno and weren't comfortable doing a time test.anyway, my court date is this friday but i can request a continuance today via phone if i need to.suggestions appreciated. this is my first speeding ticket.[Edited on July 11, 2006 at 11:50 AM. so i did some searching and found in the garage a suggestion to go to bradley's service for speedometer checkingi looked them up and called the number. a guy picked up by the name of robby with Capitol Tire Service. he said bradley service has since closed down and he now has their number and all their speedometer checking equipment. $56 to calibrate my speedometer, will provide letter for court use, plus i can stop in anytime. Here is the info if anybody needs to get their speedometer checked for court reasons:Capitol Tire Service located on S. West Street...834-5727 - ask for RobbyI think what I'll do is go to my court date on Friday and ask for a reduced charge. if that doesn't work, i'll request a continuance citing my speedometer check is not scheduled until next week. maybe that will work. wish me luck.

Same issue as ^this guy. Speedo said 44-45 and the cop pulled me over for a 54 in a 40 down centennial parkway. Figured the oversize tires on the truck would give a lower reading but didnt realize by about 10mph. Anyone know if the improper equipment thing is worth it seeing as how its basically a given? Or should I just pony up the $160 and take the points. Talking financial wise, and license pointwise.
7/12/2006 6:21:06 PM
Can't use that as an excuse in Wake County

"One outside of Winston Salem. The other in Virginia. Both of them state troopers (the real assholes). City police are much more polite and easier to deal with. The state trooper in Virginia was about to give me another ticket for having my work parking tag (designed to hang from your rear view mirror) hanging from my rear view mirror. Apparently it's against the law to hang anything from your rearview mirrors in VA.My ultimate solution to these tickets? Escort Radar Detector."It's also illegal in North Carolina to drive with anything hanging from your rear view mirror.

radar detectors are also illegal in VA, its a great state

Some VSP Troopers make a living running VG-2 on people. But in general VSP are nuts, they would ticket their mothers.[Edited on July 27, 2006 at 10:54 PM. Reason : ^And Virginia is not a State, its a commonwealth. ]

Wake County does offer a City Moving Violation (its their improper speedometer).Screw improper equipment, the court costs are more for it. An improper speedometer is only a $25 fine. Just call a lawyer, don't ever just pay a ticket that will give you points[Edited on July 28, 2006 at 9:25 AM. Reason : k]

Is this mess true??
7/28/2006 9:34:03 PM
While that sucks, had you called a lawyer in that town, you would have spent around $300 and had it reduced to a nonmoving violation.
7/29/2006 4:56:48 PM
I did call a lawyor in that town and I think they are all in on it. They said to pay it and I would be fine... so we will see I guess.

My dad said he saw something on tv about how a lot of cops in the South (GA, SC he specifically mentioned) can pull people over for a speeding and if they don't have the cash on them to pay the ticket (you're not allowed to go to the bank or anything) then the police are allowed to throw them in jail for as long as they want without even so much as a phone call, he said it happened to one young girl specifically and now always has me carry a decent amount of emergency money when I go to SC or GA, but he's really crazy. Like, even writes down the serial numbers on the bills because he doesn't want me to spend it on other stuff.Has anyone else heard anything similar to this? One time, I was driving out in the boonies near 85/751 to show my friend this funny I-85 Dixie Truck Stop/Confedarte Flag Agogo Land around 11PM one night. Well, we turn around in the parking lot and a cop follows me and pulls me oer about 1/2 mile down the road and scared the shit out of me. All wearing his sunglasses at night and shining his flashlight in my car and demanding my license and my passengers before he even told us why he pulled us over. Of course, I couldn't tell him "My friend and I wanted to make fun of this redneck truck stop", so I said we were trying to take a shortcut to the grocery store and turned the wrong way. He believed us, I guess, and after spending what seemed like ages in his patrol car, he came back after running checks on our licenses and said it was a high drug trafficing and prostitution area and we looked "suspicious". Scared the shit out of me, I'll tell you what.
7/30/2006 12:03:29 AM
I don't know but im beginning to hate the fucking south. redneck toothless fuckers. Ive been breed through and through in the South but its like they all want something for nothing and are sketchy as hell especially the cops who are suppose to be there for society's protection.
7/30/2006 12:56:32 AM
^^ what does all that mean in english?
7/30/2006 11:05:04 AM
sandnnan: What happened with your ticket.. i got my first ticket ever also in virginia.. my court date is in oct. my fine is $141 dollars.. its for 77 in a 60... i dont care about paying the fine for 141.. i just dont want my insurance to go up? you got any suggestions man.. thanks..
7/31/2006 9:57:57 PM
You being 18/19 and you did more then 11 over...I would lawyer up because otherwise its driving school for you my friend. At least if you are a VA driver not sure if VA will notify NC.
7/31/2006 10:01:14 PM
Well, I just got pulled for supposedly doing 66 in a 45 on Morrisville Carpenter Rd. at 1am. Thing is I had my cruise at 55, hell I don't think my truck would even be CAPABLE of going that fast on those curves and stay on the road. The cop was of course great: "Do you have any excuse for this blatent violation of North Carolina state law, son? You had anything to drink tonight, son? You sure? Is this your correct address? You sure?"My court date is in two weeks. I haven't had a single ticket/etc since I got my license 8 years ago. I'm thinking I should lawyer up, what does TWW think?
9/3/2006 2:08:12 AM
If this is your first violation in 8 years, I would wager you could get it dropped.I recommend writing a letter/calling the assistant DA and talking to them, explaining the situation, and noting that you haven't had a ticket in 8 years.
9/3/2006 2:33:10 AM
2 weeks?????you are suppose to get 6 weeks before court date. oh well. show up in court you will do fine.

86 in a 70 on I-40 in Sampson County. advice?
9/4/2006 1:54:00 PM
need more details
9/4/2006 4:06:49 PM
nothin much else to say. I was just doin 86. First ticket ever.
9/4/2006 8:06:16 PM
bttt 85 in a 70 on I-40 east in Johnston county, first ticket ever.My speedometer works fine and I was actually going that fast. State trooper gave me the ticket. He said the DA would drop my speed to 79 if I agreed to plead guilty, then I'd just have to show up in court, pay the fee and it wouldn't affect my insurance rate. Is that true? Is it worth a PFJ?
9/4/2006 10:39:28 PM
if it's your first, and you don't anticipate getting many more like that, go ahead and plead guilty if the assistant DA agrees to knock it down to 9 over.if you have a lot of money to blow, get a lawyer to get it dropped. james crouch is pretty good - he got me off for like $260 when i got my 2nd ticket.if it's your 2nd ticket, just pay a lawyer because it's not worth the insurance rates.don't use your PJC unless you're dead-broke and can't pay the lawyer. the PJC applies to the entire insurance plan so if you share insurance plans with your family, it's really risky. none of them can have used a PJC in the last 3 years.for more on PJCs: http://www.attorneydavidcollins.com/Article_PJC.htmlfor more on insurance points: http://www.ncsu.edu/stud_affairs/legal_services/legaldocs/Trafficpoints.htm
9/4/2006 11:44:15 PM
Thanks for the advice...I'll just plead down and pay it. If I get a second one (and I don't anticipate I will now), I'll get a lawyer then. Also, if they don't drop it to 9 over then I'll get a lawyer or use the PFJ. It's my own insurance, so I've never used my PFJ.How much should I expect to pay for 9 over in Johnston county?
9/5/2006 10:37:52 AM
the fine for 9 over is ridiculous - like $15 or something (here, in wake)just add in whatever court costs are for that county and that's your total
9/5/2006 12:14:58 PM
I received a ticket for 85 in a 70 in Pender County. Has anyone ever used the lawyers at http://www.ttrnc.com? They handle cases across NC.
9/5/2006 10:47:21 PM
To everyoneIf you dont think you'll get another speeding ticket within 3 years, ask for Prayer for Judgment, or PJC. All you need to do is go to court, pay court costs, and present the judge a copy of your driving record. If it isnt to heinous, they'll let you go scott free, but you have to be good for the next 3 years.
9/6/2006 4:31:07 PM
yeah, gl with a PJC - i would rather just pay the lawyer to get it dropped.$260 is nothing compared to how much an insurance increase would cost over time
9/6/2006 5:48:01 PM
anyone know of a good lawyer in haywood county NC? I could sure use him right about now! for a speding ticket...[Edited on September 18, 2006 at 5:20 PM. Reason : i suck at life]
9/18/2006 5:20:09 PM
do not waste your pjc on a speedin ticket on something that can be bargained with. save it for something like runnin a stoplight or something.
9/18/2006 8:23:53 PM
save it for a class 1 misdemeanor
9/18/2006 8:33:22 PM
Someone asked earlier about http://www.ttrnc.com . . . . . any experiences? They want $245 to settle my ticket, whereas the law offices I've called have wanted $400+.
9/21/2006 2:18:39 PM
Got my first ticket 4 years ago in charlotte and used my PJC. Got my 2nd speeding ticket going 82 in a 65 in greensboro but the ticket says 74 in a 65. Will my insurance go up if i just pay this fine for the 2nd one since it was only 9mph over and the PJC being 4 years ago means that there is no previous violations on my record? comments...advice
10/13/2006 3:29:46 PM
good information here on insurance points around page 6 or 7:http://tinyurl.com/uv3maBut remember that even if they don't "increase" your rates . . . they may go up if you are currently getting any discounts. It is pretty common that they remove any discounts that you are getting, thus making you have to pay more . . . but your rate is still the same.[Edited on October 15, 2006 at 1:38 PM. anyone one have any suggestions for virginia tickets? i was planning on going up next week to dispute my ticket or whatever for 76 in a 60.. it was a pretty BS ticket.. i know i was speeding but i was trying to pass this jerk off who had shit falling off the back of his truck.. the cop told me that i should have pulled over instead of speeding ahead of him.. i know the cop is right.. but any advice on what i should do? its my first ticket.. also.. my address and insurance has changed since i got the ticket.. also i heard that if the cop doesn't show up in court then its dropped anyone hear about that?

OK, I just got a 70/55 in Wake.I do have prior speeding tickets (all of the 9 over variety...yay lawyers who don't actually manage to get them changed to nonmoving ), but I don't think I've used a PJC yet.Advice I've gotten thus far has been to call up the DA (same thing as County Attorney?) and ask/plead to have it reduced/changed/something.Anyone?
12/28/2006 1:32:06 AM
get a lawyer.
12/28/2006 2:35:03 AM
Got my first Speeding Ticket ever. Somewhere near Spartanburg, SC (I don't have the ticket with me to see where exactly I was) said he clocked me going 87 in a 70 but dropped it to 79. I was speeding so I know it was my fault, I'm just a little peeved cuz I wasn't passing anyone. I just happened to be the last car in the group of cars I was following who were all going approx 90 mph.
1/15/2007 10:58:31 AM
^9 over, just mail it in, like I did....nothing to it. Also, you should be thankful he reduced it. The "but trooper, everyone else was speeding" excuse doesnt work...luckily for me, at Delray Beach when I got my ticket, he reduced it to 9 above, I just mailed it in with the fine(they get most of their money ticketing tourist)[Edited on January 15, 2007 at 11:09 AM. How long do they usually give you to pay the ticket? I always thought it was a month or so but from the day he wrote the ticket I have 2 weeks to pay the $180. Think if I called and asked if they could extend that they would let me? Please note this was in SC (see two posts above)

I got a ticket for 25 over, and this is my first ticket. Will a lawyer be able to tell me if he can realistically get it down to 9 over? If I end up having to use a prayer for judgement, assuming it applies, how does that effect my insurance compared to a 9 over? Will I have to wait for my court date to find out the results or will a lawyer be able to tell me sooner?[Edited on February 19, 2007 at 10:46 AM. ^^a lawyer being able to get it reduced depends on the circumstances. Like . . . were you a douche to the cop? And a lawyer can't guarantee you anything unless he has someone on the payroll But he can be pretty sure of his abilities.
2/19/2007 5:24:23 PM
Solution: Move to Forsyth County. There was an article in the WS Journal yesterday where the district attorney all but said that as long as you don't get a ticket for over 80 and are not a habitual offender, you're getting it reduced to improper equipment.

I got an exceeding the speed limit of 35 mph ticket in wrightsville beach the other night, not really a big deal except of the probability of going back down there for court. Question: if the cop wrote the wrong date for your court appearance, what happens? My court date is "friday, april 29, 2007"
