First soccer thread I saw... interesting article that seems eerily similar to the talk around the NHL in the years coming up to 2005-06 when they made big changes.http://football.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,,1767320,00.html?gusrc=rss

5/4/2006 5:10:35 PM
what do you think the starting lineup and formation will be?

no way does albright start, he is too slow for the world cup...id expect sometehing like:KellerCherundolo Onyewu Pope BocanegraReyna or Mastroeni at CDMBeasley at one wing side, donovan at att mid, other wing lewis or conveyjohnson and mcbride up top
5/5/2006 8:37:26 AM
^ I think it's safe to say Reyna will be in the starting lineup.
5/5/2006 9:35:27 AM
i dont know about bocanegra, he struggles for any time at fulham. the english press seems to think that hes garbage, i dont know if id be that harsh. i hope that arena starts johnson, and i think he will, becuase he can be a pretty dangeorus player, more so than wolff. i meant to put in cherundelo, not albright, albright was crap against jamaica, i wouldnt want him even in the stadium against italy or czech rep[Edited on May 5, 2006 at 9:50 AM. Reason : albright]
5/5/2006 9:49:42 AM
well im still waiting for reyna to get hurt, its inevitable, thats why mastroeni is there
5/5/2006 11:37:52 AM
After watching Albright at the game against Jamaica I can say he is very slow. His only strong point is that he seemed to be good at getting headers off of corners.
5/5/2006 11:40:03 AM
I don't want Cherundolo or Albright... I'd personally rather have Gibbs over both of them with Pope, Oneywu, and Mastroeni in like a defensive midfield spot. That lets Reyna run the game in the middle and let Donovan be pretty much our third forward.EJ is way more dangerous to me than Wolff, whom I think is a pussy.Ditto for Twellman, I think that's why he didn't make the team, Arena couldn't take too many pussies.
5/5/2006 12:50:32 PM
concur, and id rather have berhalter but he didnt make the team, i guess theres a good reason
5/5/2006 3:02:40 PM

crouch sucks, tall goofy guy. i guess he hopes rooney will be back...
5/8/2006 10:14:04 AM
^ Crouch's only purpose is to win those large swinging crosses from Beckham with his head. He can't do much else.Rooney is 90% not going to be ready for the World Cup.Owen is coming off a long injury.Walcott has never played a minute in the Premiership. His highest level of play being 10 games with Southampton in the Championship.Who's going to score the goals?[Edited on May 8, 2006 at 10:17 AM. Reason : .]
5/8/2006 10:17:38 AM
it might be safe to say that england is not trying to score goals.Theo Walcott hasnt played in the first team all year. I dont think he has even been put on the bench all year.
5/8/2006 10:19:09 AM
sven is an idiot. he should have taken jermaine defoe or darren bent. i know defoe hasnt gotten much pt this year but im sure he would ball. and darren bent has a shitload of goals in the prem. miachel owen will probably be ineffective, peter crouch will be peter crouch, wayne rooney will be watching from the locker room, and theo walcott, who knows, could go either way, and wayne bridge is garbage.[Edited on May 8, 2006 at 10:38 AM. Reason : bridge]
5/8/2006 10:38:17 AM
Crouch isn't Rooney or anything, but the times I've watched him... I thought he's done a decent job. He's nothing spectacular, but he isn't exactly the worst player in the world. I actually think his style is good for England. He can win alot of balls up top and slow the game down and let the midfield get up there and score some goals -- midfielders like Lampard that score 20 goals in the Premiership
5/8/2006 11:18:19 AM
true enough. and with englands lack of star power up top, theyre gonna have to go to their midfield to serve balls into the box, and then he'll pay off. he just always looks like hes this close to breaking in half. check out the rest of englands team though, arent a lot of them getting up there in age? paul robinson, neville, rio, ashley cole, sol, wayne bridge, beckham, hargreaves? aaron lennon is pretty damn good though, and young, should be around for a while.does anyone else think that beckham has outlived his usefulness? i say start joe cole and lampard at the outside middies, leave becks on the bench, and give the C to john terry where it belongs.
5/8/2006 11:23:33 AM
^ Based on what I read, most everyone think Beckham has outlived his usefulness. He only exists now as a marketing machine that sells a lot of shirts. (He'll still start every game and be captain cause Eriksson loves him.)
5/8/2006 11:30:10 AM
another reason why sven is on the way out. the british press really fucked themselves by scaring scolari away, he would have made them great again.
5/8/2006 11:32:12 AM
van basten announced the dutch squad, and he left out davids, makaay, and seedorf. ouch
5/8/2006 2:06:39 PM
i like davids, always have, but that was a good move...i would just like to say how cool it is (if i haven't said it before) that marco van basten coaches the dutch national teamalso, they have some of the best jerseys this side of anyplace - that is all

5/8/2006 4:51:20 PM
Ah, EA Sports' FIFA Hockey-on-Grass 2006.
5/8/2006 4:56:01 PM
I know you guys think that Sven screwed up by adding Theo, but I really think it's a gamble that will pay off. Or maybe I'm just full of wishful thinking.I do agree Crouch should've been left out in favor of someone like Darren Bent, but I hope that wont come back to bite England in the ass because Lampard and Gerrard will be scoring goals (hopefully)Sven adding Theo actually made me feel quite a bit better about England's chances. Sven isn't the horrible coach people make him out to be... he was really well established (actually pretty dominant) in Europe before he became England's manager
5/8/2006 5:13:34 PM
^ No, on the contrary, I do think this is a good thing. I'd love to see Trinidad beat England, so I think him selecting Walcott, Crouch, and 2 injured strikers is a good thing.
5/8/2006 5:20:22 PM
I honestly think he'll come to his senses and drop Rooney before the WC, just because it's the right thing to do. There's no way he'll be ready for any stage of the competition.
5/8/2006 5:31:06 PM
why, theres gonna be probably like 4 or 5 guys that will never see any action anyways so why not try your luck with rooney on the bench
