"

This was the first thread I saw about it since I don't check Soapbox often. The Lounge section is supposed to be serious discussion, at least compared with Chit Chat, perhaps less so than Soapbox.

It's really sad that TWW is considered only a forum on which people troll each other rather than merely ignoring something they don't consider interesting/worth a decent comment. Seeing as it's aimed toward students, apparently it's catering primarily to those students that are more interested in partying and getting laid than in discussing something, regardless of which (more serious) section it's in. Yes, it's glaringly obvious those are the goals in Chit Chat, but it's absurd that it's spilling over this badly into The Lounge and even in Soapbox, and I would prefer to believe that there are TWW members that care.

I'd rather discuss with peers in my age range, geographical area, and education level, or slightly above if alumni, than on some random forum.

It'd be cool if that formed something. It almost looks like the bust of a person.

"After attacking Afghanistan al Qaeda was fractured, but it's never been simply one central organization. Multiple terrorists can make attacks in the name of the group. I wouldn't put it past al Qaeda's followers to continue trying to attack the US b/c that is their goal - to kill Americans and others that aren't militant Muslims (but with emphasis on the US). They're very passionate, and that's part of the danger.

... Quinn, I'm taking a class about terrorism, which by no means makes me an expert, but it requires me to do a lot of research into the history and present state of terrorism. The information in the second paragraph of my post was by no means a pointless opinion, but information based upon multiple resources from people whose careers are studying, analyzing, and writing about terrorism. I also based my opinion in the first paragraph on my studies so far. If you want to respond to a thought-out response with a ridiculous, pointless statement perhaps you should study into the subject as well, since you insinuate that you know what you're talking about (and provide no evidence to back your opinion of my statements)."

If you know about the history of Al-Qaeda, then you know that the terrorist organization wasn't even really an "organization" per se until our intelligence and media seized upon it and bin Laden, etc, realized the power that the name and the idea would have. Our media essentially created Al Qaeda and gave them the power and mythology that they have today.

There was an excellent 3-part documentary called The Politics of Fear about this from the BBC over a year ago, that looked at the rise of neoconservatism and the power of creating illusions about security and terrorism to gain political clout. It also does an excellent job of tracing the historical roots of Islamic extremism. You should try to get a hold of it; I saw it while I was in England, but I don't know if it's subsequently been broadcast in the US at all.

GO TEAM USA

It's not that necessarily. A topic such as this is difficult to keep an objective/intellectual point of view throughout the life of the thread. If you do have website links to some of the sources you look at, post them and base the thread off those links. They most likely would be interesting to read. Otherwise, discussion about a general topic or news story will inevitably go off topic.

Do you really believe more of this put out by the Whitehouse? Skepticism is healthy and now quite warranted. I'm not a "Bush-beater," but I'm not feeling too good right now...

I don't think this will be broadcast in the US... but here it is. I've watched it too about a month ago and I feel it is an interesting set of episodes. It is worth your time to watch... here are the links.
