Is there actually any wording that allows the ACC to change the rivalry teams every so often?
1/16/2006 10:39:04 PM
They can do anything they want. They're the ACCAsk Mike Tranghese

http://theacc.collegesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/022405aag.htmlRight now we are under a three-year rotation
1/16/2006 10:43:28 PM
^^^^true. this is mainly just a coaching ribvalry. i think maryland will stay good under gary williams and his style is good for beating coach k. as long as hes there it should be competitive. its still a short term "ball club/coach" rivalry instead of a school rivalry.and why would me liking duke make me want maryland to be the rival over ncstate? thats whats keeping me from watching duke courtside this season. [Edited on January 16, 2006 at 10:44 PM. Reason : silly]

I think Maryland's best days are behind them. He got lucky with the National Championship team... it kind of fell into his lap, and his recruiting has been shoddy ever since.
1/16/2006 10:47:18 PM
To their credit though, aside from this year, I think Maryland and Duke had the hottest series going in the conference for a brief period of time.
1/16/2006 10:50:12 PM
looked around and i couldn't find info on this, how is the acc tournament format done this year? do the top 4 teams get a bye and the other 8 play?
1/16/2006 10:50:47 PM
Theres a little confusion here....the divisions for football are only for football...we dont play Florida State, Boston College, etc, twice every year in basketball (see this years schedule...only one contest with FSU). In basketball there are no divisions and you have two primary rivals you play twice every year...then 3 other spots for two games per year that rotate amongst the other teams. But yeah, its sad that State doesnt play Duke twice a year every year and that UNC doesnt play Wake twice every year. For basketball, there needs to be three primary rivals with 2 rotating spots...this would take care of the Big Four. For football, with the new 12 game schedule, Id like to see the ACC move to a 9 game season and two cross-division rivals...giving us a chance to play Duke every year like we should (lets face it, that 12th game is going to be a I-AA team almost every year, so why not play a rival instead?). Id also like to see Virginia Tech moved to our division to create a new rivalry, but thatll never happen.
1/16/2006 10:52:17 PM
also note, that noone in the acc could really be considered BC's rivalry in anyway at all, so someone was stuck with them. i think the point was that they couldn't just do a triangle with ncsu, duke, and unc all just playing each other as the rivalry home and away. someone answer my question from above
1/16/2006 10:55:55 PM
^ yes, that's the only way they could really do the tourney format, so take an NCAA tournament grid of 16 seeds and erase 13 thru 16 to see how it would shake out^ Maryland could be BC's rival, they're closest (although for closest rival that's a bit of a drive)
1/17/2006 12:03:10 AM
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKIT SUX EVEN MORE NOWFUCK
1/18/2006 10:17:07 PM
i think BC's two primary rivals could be VT and Miami, since they played each other in the BE. i wish i could have been Terry Brooks from News 14 tonight. he got paid to be in Cameron and watch the game.
1/18/2006 10:24:30 PM
I approve of this thread. Can some of the cupcakes and get to the games everyone really gives a shit about. Wouldn't the increases tv money make up for whatever team doesn't make the NCAA's?This system blows.
1/18/2006 10:31:47 PM
round robin play would validate us as the top conference. that was one of the strengths of the ACC that made it so great, and what everyone pointed too.
1/18/2006 10:34:56 PM
I for real think they need to just add a third rivalry game, just to satisfy tobacco road teams. I dont give a fuck if it pisses everyone else off...we created this league, FUCK EVERYONE ELSE!!!!!!!!!
1/18/2006 10:37:14 PM
did you not watch the unc duke games last year? how can you say that umd had a better rivalry that is horse shit
1/19/2006 12:32:10 AM
a lot of Duke fans don't even acknowledge UMD as their second best rival.
1/19/2006 12:36:06 AM
So this thread seems incredibly appropriate now... the way the scheduling will go after Pitt/Syracuse join the conference was just announced:http://www.theacc.com/genrel/020312aaa.html
2/3/2012 12:22:14 PM
What would it take to go back to 9 teams? Can't wait for the day the Swofford is no longer comish. FUCK THAT GUY!
2/3/2012 12:26:35 PM
where do you read that?
2/3/2012 12:31:30 PM
obviously it's not explicitly stated in the article, but if there's only one primary partner for each team, we're the ones screwed.http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/accs-new-basketball-schedule-could-mean-less-nc-state-unc-matchups[Edited on February 3, 2012 at 12:32 PM. Reason : ]

Probably better for my blood pressure, but it still sucks.
2/3/2012 12:33:48 PM
2/3/2012 12:36:33 PM
Yeah, this effectively kills Tobacco Road as it used to exist. But with us and wake wallowing in mediocrity for most of recent history, it's kind of been dead except in name already.I'm not that upset about this, to be honest.
2/3/2012 12:39:01 PM
FUCK YOU ACC. FUCK YOU.
2/3/2012 12:49:03 PM
So as a conference we raise the exit fee for teams, then we lose the rivalry most NCSU fans care the most about. We might as well move to the SEC now.
2/3/2012 12:49:21 PM
a shame, the official end of the Big 4. though i guess with the way it happened with wake being left out last time, it was already dead.maybe in 10 years, we'll be stomping people into the ground, K and Roy will be gone, and all will be fine
2/3/2012 12:49:50 PM
^but that's the time we would want to be playing UNC and Duke twice
2/3/2012 12:53:48 PM
on the bright side, if we ever manage to beat UNC in basketball, it'll be a sweep!
2/3/2012 12:57:36 PM
SEC time
2/3/2012 12:58:35 PM
As if they'd have us. They'd much rather wait on Texas and then add either FSU, Clemson, Miami, or GT if they're going to pick off a team from the ACC.
2/3/2012 1:01:17 PM
FSU or Miami...they already have FloridaClemson...they already have South CarolinaGeorgia Tech...they already have Georgiawhat they don't have is a North Carolina marketits not just about "who is the best football program to add" they want them extra TV dollars]
2/3/2012 1:07:00 PM
Then why wouldn't they add Maryland or Virginia and capture a much larger market in the DC/Baltimore metro area?Sorry, but we aren't a very appealing get. We're the 2nd most popular football program in the state, and the 2nd or 3rd most popular basketball program. We have zero national name recognition. I don't ever see a jump to the SEC. They'd be much better off either getting another big name school and increasing their prestige on the national stage or going north or west and taking a Virigina or continuing to add midwest schools now that they Missouri coming into the fold.
2/3/2012 1:13:41 PM
i could definitely see them going after Virginia Tech, who gets the DC market and is a better football programbut i'd see them picking us before the other 4 schools you mentionedany conference would take Texas]
2/3/2012 1:16:29 PM
^6 lol... like the sound of thatusing the divisions for bball may have actually helped us keep the UNC rivalry... BUT the coastal would probably be too lopsided...wouldn't want the coastal scrubs to complain about scheduling inequality.[Edited on February 3, 2012 at 1:18 PM. Reason : carrotz]
2/3/2012 1:17:15 PM
^^^I know there was interest in us to the SEC and that was from an SEC AD.[Edited on February 3, 2012 at 1:19 PM. Reason : .]

2/3/2012 1:19:27 PM
Good to see the new ACC expansion is being just as poorly executed as the last one! WHO ARE THESE IDIOT MONKEYS IN THE CONFERENCE OFFICE? oh well, just another step towards college basketball's inevitable death. hey guys, want to expedite the irrelevance of college basketball? ruin rivalries! short-sighted asshats. fuck.
2/3/2012 1:19:55 PM
The "North Carolina Market" is about as valuable to the SEC as the "Obese Caucasian Gamer Market" is to TWW. Charlotte and Raleigh are both borderline top 30, but neither would widen the SEC's footprint enough to be viable. It would be an exercise in redundancy to add another poor southern state to a league already overrun with them.[Edited on February 3, 2012 at 1:21 PM. Reason : x]
2/3/2012 1:21:24 PM
2/3/2012 1:22:43 PM
well outside of ACC land, nobody gives two shits about UNC/NCSU.....Duke/UNC is a different story. haNCSU to the SEC? ha, NCSU would never leave UNC or Duke.
2/3/2012 1:24:17 PM
Give the data available, I don't see how one could possibly come to that conclusion.
2/3/2012 1:24:37 PM
No, I think he's saying they've already got enough of that or similar that there's no reason to put forth the effort to get more. Tennessee is wildly popular in the western part of the state and there just isn't that much that they'd gain from a NC team unless they got UNC.
2/3/2012 1:26:45 PM
^^^ um, ok. Not sure of the relevance considering we are talking about the ACC.[Edited on February 3, 2012 at 1:28 PM. Reason : X]
2/3/2012 1:27:24 PM
aside from the DC area (i already said VT would be a better choice than NCSU)...and if you take out Florida and Atlanta since they already have a shitload of SEC fans, Charlotte and Raleigh are bigger than any other market currently in the SECand fat white gamers are valuable to TWW]
2/3/2012 1:28:34 PM
The ACC is a perfect spot for us.
