Not that it matters at this point, but I should tell you that the 951 tranny IS heavier than the 944 transaxle, turbo S transaxles (and others with LSD) even more so.

Its called a job, and the reason why I'm doing this is also because I would like a brand new car. However, I'm not all up for spending around 30k for a car (Something within the same class as an rx8) that I'd like when really its not exactly what I want. Even then, the rx8 is still underpowered to my taste.

Hence why I'm purchasing a blueprinted LS1 and later upgrading the tranny to a rebuilt 951 transaxle. What does a new car offer me? A new engine, new tranny, warranty, and newer interior. Well, I love the 944 interior just fine, so scratch that off. The block and transmission will both come with a 1 year warranty. I don't see myself needing any warrantee longer than that. Which is indeed a risk on my part. However I'm all over that. So really, this project is about 15k, $20k if I wanted to upgrade the body too. So basically I'm paying 10k more for a car of "equal quality, but a newer interior and such, plus a longer warranty (which in most cases is 3 yr 36k). Sorry, a couple years extra of warranty isn't worth about $10k. *yawn*

Oh I'm not looking for resale here either. i'm hoping to keep this car around for as long as I'm around. I know most people don't keep their cars but 2-4 years, but that's most people, which obviously I'm not.

Do yourself a favor and pay cash...don't finance this. Do you carry collision on this car being it's so old and only cost you a few grand anyway? Just seems dropping $20K is a bit much. Esp if you endup wrapping it around a tree with no insurance to cover it. $15-20K is a shit load of money.

That 1983 roller is probably worth $300. I think Tuite is looking for a little better bang for his buck.

If the last 5 people who posted will read the VERY FIRST FREAKING POST, you will notice that I said that I'm working saving my money up for the engine swap which will be conducted in July? Damn, didn't yall learn any critical reading skills while you were in school?

Update: The exhaust manifold for chambers 2 and 3 has a crack on the lower flange, so I've ordered a set of new headers to help solve this issue. I'll have it fixed by next week just so none of you tree huggers out there die from lung cancer.

maybe you're the one that needs an extra course in the english language. BY july would infer that the swap is already in some sort of progression, whether it be planning/gathering parts/physical labor, and will be completed on or before july 1st.

Looks like the conversion kit runs $2000 plus. So add the cost of the car: $5000, the cost of building a small block worth the effort: $1000+, and the cost of the kit: $2500(shipping, etc) and your total cost will easily top $9,000, not including the weeks of your life that will be forever gone. All for a 20 year old "poor man's porsche" that might, if you're lucky, run 0-60 in 5.5secs.

You can buy some fine used sports cars for under 10 grand.(300zx, RX-7, camaros, mustangs, etc) If you're looking to build something that will really snap your neck check a 302 conversion in a miata. 350hp in a 2500lb(post conversion) car is really something to brag about. That conversion kit is pricey too, but miatas can be found dirt cheap so you'd end up with less cash in it in the long run.

Anyway, just some thoughts, not trying to be a hater. Keep us updated.

Scottyc, hater...
tuite, Thanks for looking that up for me bud. I'll be stickin an LS1 in there though.

I'm not draggin this car or anything, so I'm not worried about the 0-60 times or how fast it'll run a Quater mile. and pyro, I appreicate the fact that you find a 2500lb car with 350 hp something to brag about, considering that's what I'll be getting for the end result. The car is already only 2,900lbs. Getting the body in fiberglass alone will knock it down to around in the 2500lb ballpark, and getting the windows heat formed will kill about another 100-120lbs. This car is going to be light, still maintain the 50-50 weight distribution, and have power. Plus, there are hardly anyone doing this conversion. There are ALOT more people doing the v8 swap in rx-7's, 300zx's, and miatas... How many ls1 porsche's are out there? Yes, I will be paying more in the long run for this conversion, it is something I've already taken into consideration. However, at the same time, I'll have something that will make more people go WOW. Half the people I talk to don't even believe that the freakin v8 will fit.

I agree it will be cool. It will cost a lot and take a lot of time, as you are already aware. If you end up finishing it I think it will be pretty nice. Remember that a lot of people are going to be skeptical as they hear shit like this often, and usually it ends up not happening.

I suggest you just leave this thread to die, and when you finish it just post pics of the completed car. You will avoid a lot of flaming using this method.

perhaps you should have posted a thread of when you actually started working on the project, instead of you might be doing it in the near future... Cause your not going to get any respect on tdub right now, and you'd lose all hopes if you don't even do the project you set out to do in the first place.
