We've been good at football for a while.

The coach at UVA before sweaty Pete Gillen was asked which venue was the toughest to play in the ACC.He said without a doubt Reynolds - the noise was deafening, the students were on top of you, and instead of the "I'm gonna kill your kids" threats he got at other schools, State students would threaten to kill my hampster.I'm searching for the exact quote now.

So is that the kind of stuff we should be striving for?Spitting on players and chanting about killing grandparents?I would say some things are better left behind at Reynolds.Besides, if we tried to spit on opposing players, we'd just hit their parents. Now I've seen a lot of players' parents go absolutely nuts on us before. Anyway, all that space between us and the players makes a big difference. It's not as easy as it used to be: before you could just lean forward and whisper right in a player's ear that you were gonna be waiting for him outside if he made his next shot.

The crazies at Duke are all about their cute little simulated cheers and getting on TV. In Reynolds there was pure raw emotion at work. The intensity was amazing, the noise was deafening, and the intimidation factor was 2nd to none. Teams came into Reynolds and won (which wasn't very often) but they had to earn a victory over NC State.[Edited on January 14, 2006 at 10:46 AM. Reason : more]

Man, this thread was prophetic. At the start of the second half, one of the SWPC board members got the idea of taking all the cheer sheets (yeah, yeah) and writing the alphabet out on them, one letter to page. As Tarver walked to the bench, we sang the alphabet for him.So we were riding him hard about it for a while. Then after the last time out, as Coach Hewett was putting his dry erase board away, someone yelled, "Can Tarver even understand what you're drawing on that thing?"And he turned around, pointed, and yelled, "FUCK YOU! THAT'S SO UNCLASSY!! THAT'S SO UNCLASSY etc. etc."Plain as day. See, we can still get under the opponents' skin.

[friend of mine in Atlanta]: yes...the faculty senate met yesterday for their regular session & Tarver had an appeal. He was reinstated due to the circumstances surrounding his academics (he didn't qualify by Tech standards but did by NCAA...his mom died last semester & he IS on track to graduate in a full 5 years in spring 2007).Man, how come I never hear about players' parents being dead until it's too late? It's like my freshman year, when Juan Dixon tried to jump over the bench and kill me.

Recall being to many games in Reynolds back in the days of suckage basketball we played in the '90s. Many times, I remember my friend yelling right in my ear and not being able to understand a single word he said. Reynolds...hands down...the best! Don't compare the heritage games we play now every year against weak competition to how is use to be...not even close.

Pete Gillen was the UVA coach...I thought it was a gerbil but my memory is hazy these days. It was the guy next to me who said it and never mentioned anything about Pete's family..that was taboo. His quote was great, though.Pi Master- I think Juan Dixon was trying to kill Adam. You may have just been in the way.I remember Hacktar Ndiaye jumping on the scorer's table and flipping off the student section. I was there for the infamous Gary Williams "Fuck you" episode joined by Terrell Stokes (IIRC) offering the same kind words. I saw Rick Barnes throw a clipboard across the court. One night the students counting down the shot clock got a player to shoot it with 5 seconds gone from near half court. Clyde Drexler had some praise for the crowd after getting ejected when he was coaching. When Dick Paparo was reffing you could have 12,400 people screaming "You suck Dick" in unison.I'm biased but Reynolds was crazier. Not synchronized, often not clever, but make your ears bleed and pull your hair out crazy. I think the poll of former players/coaches bears witness to that.

Hey Old Guy, do they have cable at your nursing home, or can you only watch the games that are played on network television?
1/15/2006 9:40:53 AM
The nurses let me have cable. They sometimes have to sedate me, though, when I talk about the good ol days of watching Ivan Wagner dunk in Reynolds, Keith Bean throwing fore-arm shivers, being flipped off by the entire unc-ch women's bball team, or how I only have residual hearing left from too many warm nights inside Reynolds yelling until my eyes popped out of my head.I tried to find a special the Duke Basketball Report ran back when we played our last season in Reynolds. They had collected a whole bunch of quotes about the place that probably would have ended this argument right here.

^ I remember Rashad McCants said the same thing...
1/15/2006 2:42:40 PM
and he never even played in reynolds
1/15/2006 3:20:36 PM
^ Not sure what you mean by that (Like pointing out an error of mine, or saying "If he thinks RBC is bad, he'd hate Reynolds.... no idea)That quote is about the RBC center....not Reynolds. I remember Rashad saying that the RBC Center was tougher to play in than Cameron. Had nothing to do with Reynolds.I just can't wait to see the RBC when/if we're ever perenially a top 5 or so team. That place will be freakin rocking... we've all seen flashes of it. If we were a super-high profile team, I bet we'll have that place nearly as loud as Reynolds. how do you think hewitt would have reacted had the game been played at reynolds? haha
1/16/2006 3:12:06 PM
Got this from a quick search at DBR:Pete Gillen, former UVA Head Coach, on Reynolds being crazier and louder than Cameron:"I had guys two rows behind me screaming in my face: 'Your wife's ugly. We know where you live. We're going to blow up your car, shoot your cat, kill your gerbil.' I asked my assistant, 'Tommy what are they doing.' Ten guys yell, 'Tommy, what are they doing.' Everybody said Duke is the toughest place. Duke was very tough, but N.C. State is the toughest."

And that's not from someone's cousin who used to go to both or anything, that's a former ACC coach who coached in both, Pete Gillen.
