if san diego finishes 2nd in the afc west, then they play the other 2nd place teams in the afc east and south,(miami and jax) if they finish 3rd in the afc west, then they play the 3rd place teams..(tenn and buff)...they already play the entire afc north next year so there standings in the afc west are irrelavant for them....

Just heard on ESPN Rivers isnt even going to start this week even though its the last game of the season and the Chargers are out of the playoffs. Figured you guys would care.
12/27/2005 6:36:51 PM
[old]They don't want to fuck up his trade value.
12/27/2005 8:11:14 PM
What trade value?? An overpriced, overrated college player who has spent two years on the bench and didn't throw even one pass this year? Yeah, I guess you are right, they prolly dont want to show the world how bad he is. Obviously, if he had any signs of progress they would start him to show everyone what he can do. God I love this. Just further supports what I have been saying all along about this guy.
12/28/2005 1:10:57 PM
regardless of what you think, he will be starting somewhere next year
12/28/2005 1:15:10 PM
Ryan Leaf even started a few games.
12/28/2005 1:16:28 PM
hows your boy clarret doing?vick gonna be starting in any play off games this year?
12/28/2005 1:28:40 PM
Thats funny, I don't recall ever talking shit about him. But he is prolly doing pretty good wearing his national championship ring.
12/28/2005 1:29:34 PM
i wonder who the falcons will draw this year?man i hope vick finally gets a championship ring of some kind this year, since he never got one in college
12/28/2005 1:31:25 PM
12/28/2005 1:31:38 PM
Falcons aren't going to the playoffs....
12/28/2005 1:34:16 PM
oh yeah that's rightsilly methose poor falcons
12/28/2005 1:35:05 PM
they are showing off the guy for trade, and that's brees.
12/28/2005 10:34:06 PM
Phillip WAS a great college qb and thats all. If he was half as good as brees, he would have the job ;ie eil manning. I initially diddn't want to believe this, but him riding the bench for two years just diddnt add up.
12/28/2005 10:40:01 PM
Rivers is unproven performance-wise as of nowhe's not playing because of the situation he was placed in and because of the situation he placed himself innext year could be different[Edited on December 28, 2005 at 10:59 PM. Reason : sdaf]
12/28/2005 10:59:06 PM
Why did the Chargers draft him? Why couldn't he have just gone to the Giants and start halfway through his rookie year? Fuck the Chargers. He better be starting somewhere next year.
12/28/2005 11:39:53 PM
the chargers drafted Eli to use him as a bargaining chip for something more useful to them: a bunch of draft picksthe chargers aren't playing Rivers this week so they can use him as a bargaining chip: to keep his trade value (or Bree's) high
12/28/2005 11:41:36 PM
thought clarret's ring was stolen when his, um i mean a boosters, suv was broken into.
12/29/2005 12:51:20 AM
i guess i missed that memo on where rivers got a free pass into the nfl and was destined to be a great qbidk maybe its just me though
12/29/2005 3:09:05 AM
everyone that actually thinks they are gonna trade brees makes me laughyea, maybe they would get more from brees in a trade, but they also might think that they get more from him by keeping him than they would get by rivers staying, mainly that he is proventhus the arguement that he's gonna get traded bc they will get more for him is foolishthe colts would get more for manning than they would for the 2nd string center, but that doesn't mean that they are more likely to deal manning.....rivers will be traded[Edited on December 29, 2005 at 3:26 AM. 12/29/2005 3:23:41 AM
i dont think they'll trade brees but he has been playing pretty shitty lately. Rivers couldn't do much worse.
12/29/2005 3:51:59 AM
^^But not only could they get more by trading Brees, but there's no guarantee they could even get rid of Rivers. With Rivers huge contract, the idea of trading Brees is much easier. And perhaps Rivers has shown them something in practice that leads them to believe he could lead that team just as effectively as Brees has.I think Brees has done enough to keep the job, but with his contract running out and teams looking for good QB's(proven QB's) that they could easily get a first-round pick and some more for Brees. There is NO way they'd get that much for Rivers and they'd take a salary cap hit if they traded Rivers. And the Colts wouldn't trade Manning because he is still under contract for a LARGE sum of money, not many teams could even take him onto the team because of the salary cap issues he would cause. But it's a bad comparison, Brees will be a free agent at the end of this year, Manning won't.
12/29/2005 10:26:21 AM
But since brees is a Free agent at the end of the year, they would have to franchise him and sign him to a one year deal, then trade him. I am pretty sure they would take a cap hit for that too. They might just have to let him go, and get nothing for him.
12/29/2005 1:27:30 PM
the cap hit for that wouldn't be as bad as the cap hit for trading rivers. the biggest hits come out of the bonus money players get. the franchise tag only has salary requirements if i'm not mistaken, so they could just tag him for a year with the top 5 (at qb) salary w/little to no bonus. and all brees has proven is that he can occasionally have good games if you put a pro bowl running back and tight end, and a solid receiver around him. most nfl quarterbacks worthy of starting could have done at least that with just the running back.brees is gone, philip stays.
12/29/2005 2:04:22 PM
i don't know enough about salary caps to comment on that, so i'll just leave it out. it seems to me that if san diego was gonna keep rivers, he'd be starting the last game. since he's not, i have to think they don't want to fuck up his trade value, as others have said
12/29/2005 2:09:02 PM
i don't think rivers has a lot of trade value having not played. i think they want to keep playing brees so they can trade him, and then keep rivers.i don't think rivers has this awesome trade value right now that they are trying not to ruin
12/29/2005 2:11:24 PM
and with the tag, they wouldnt give brees much signing bonus, if any so there'd be no cap hit. his salary would take up cap space until he was traded and then they'd be fine. if they trade rivers, i believe all the rest of his bonus money will go against the current year's cap (probably around $10-$11 million or so). i know that's what happens when you cut a player, so i'm guessing the same goes for trading.
12/29/2005 2:42:02 PM
anyway you slice it, brees will be in san diego next year, rivers will not, everyone on this board can flame me if it's not true
12/29/2005 2:44:25 PM
http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/chargers/20051228-9999-1s28chargers.htmlinteresting point on how the chargers are looking at this....
12/29/2005 4:15:46 PM
"Brees badly wants a multiyear deal, but it is believed he will sign a franchise tender, in part because the money is great."I KNEW he didn't have to sign a franchise tag if it was chosen to be put on him. That would just be a bum deal if a player had to accept it when he could get a better deal elsewhere. But with that being said, it'll come down to the offers they get. They will use BOTH of them as trade bait, see what kind of offers they can get, and then they'll choose from there. I just don't see them getting as many offers for Rivers as they would a franchised Drew Brees. Plus with the team and the offense they have, I think they feel confident with either of them leading it. When LT gets back to 100%, they pick up a OL and a WR(either FA or draft) then they'll have one of the top 5 offenses in the league, regardless if it is Rivers or Brees. But then again, their owner said they wouldn't trade one of the QB's just to trade them, they liked the situation they had. I wouldn't be suprised if no great offers presented themselves, that they'd franchise Brees once again and give him yet another year to prove himself while Rivers remains on the bench.
12/29/2005 5:22:38 PM
he does have to sign it, if he wants to play. he is a restricted free agent, so if he wants to sign with another team, they'd have to give up two first round picks in order to sign them. so it's either sign the franchise tender or don't play at all.
12/29/2005 5:53:03 PM
^^ i seriously doubt any team would be stupid enough to give up 2 first round picks for brees....
