I don't think you understabd Peter Jackson tried to stay true to the original film while still making a modernized film so it would appeal to the masses. I thought it was great the dinosaurs didn't look real. I thought it was great the story didn't explain how Kong got back to New York. That is the beauty of the imagination; something new Hollywood has forgotten people have.

yeah
thats it

WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT?

if anything there isn't ENOUGH to think about

if anything the story of kong is a morality play about how, and i know i'm biting fucking penny arcade, man's need to corrupt or control every last bit of the unknown is what truly destroys the beautiful things of this world, originally as a smack in the face of colonialism in africa

but you can't replace that with some fucking 15 year old without a past reading a joseph conrad novel

it just doesn't work that way

rawwulf i hope you were being sarcastic

i don't think andy serkis spent 6 months living with and studying gorillas so they could be "truthful to the original", they did that because they wanted the most realistic experience possible; so don't tell me they spent so much effort on getting kong right, but didn't get the dinosaurs right as a "tribute" or some shit

peter jackson can suck my left nut, hes not good enough for the right one

anyone who would sell THEIR PRODUCTION NOTES for over THIRTY FUCKING DOLLARS and then try to pass off a films shortcomings as "being true to the original" is a fucking hack

It's ok to not like the film, but calling Peter Jackson a hack is a little extreme.

Well it just seems backwards to me that you would harp on this film's shortcomings while defending shit like the Fantastic Four. It seems more of the typical overreaction to an acclaimed filmmaker/artist/whatever that people have when everyone likes him and they don't than a legitimate assessment of the filmmaker's actual skill.

The boat thing DOES seem like something they held over from the original more than a big gaping overlooked plot hole. The only solutions they could've conceivably worked into this film is to either make the boat a lot bigger or come up with some kind of raft to get him back to land. Neither one would've been very satisfactory IMO.

yes, that is a comparison you can make everyday

"king kong" and "fantastic four" are to be watched and enjoyed the exact same way
and should be held to the same standards

and sorry vulcan, my bad

Well, given that you once respected Peter Jackson for what I consider the WORST LotR film, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

i liked the movie. extremely entertaining to me.

only gripe was that they could have left the character development of the kid and the black dude out of it and cut about half an hour out of it.

I don't care how many of you bash this movie...I thought it was great. Lot's of reference back to the original but kept it updated and entertaining. I was a huge fan of the original since I was little so maybe I have a skewed opinion. I thought it did the original justice and was well worth the price of admission. If only other remakes were as good as this one!

The fact is he did try to get the gorilla right -- I mean god damn, he wanted to give it a cock when the film was in pre-production -- but he wanted the dinosaurs to comes off as fantasy.

it was alright - a little bit too long, and without much subtlety, but the kong vs 3 t-rexes scene was well worth the admission

If you cut out the first hour of the movie, its actually very good.

I liked it.

Sure was better to watch then that festering christian-emo pile known as Narnia.

it's a stop-motion monstrosity from one of Peter Jackson's earlier movies

I thought everything from the time they got to the island to RIGHT before the final line was pure gold

"twas beauty killed the beast?" I don't care if it WAS on the original, that line sucked, it was delivered horribly, and it doesn't make fucking sense. what an awful, awful way to end the flick

I almost cried when kong died though

ok, i just watched The Iron Giant again for the first time in prolly a year

yeah, the relationship in that movie is like 10x better than the relationship in kong

i know its not so much an apples-to-apples deal
but i think the comparison is valid

I hated the movie. it was tedious, slow, and pointless. everyone already knew the storyline. i don't understand how people think that ripping off ("showing homage to") someone else's art is acceptable.

Unless you can find me a 1930's movie with a realistic gorrilla interacting with a human female in a pretty touching manner, then I would hardly call this movie a 'rip off'.

saw it last night at brier creek

a lot could have been trimmed from the movie, particularly the first hour or so, but overall it was very good, and the 3 hours only seemed like 2 hours and 55 minutes

realistic

you seen any 2d gorilllas walking around rwanda?

cause if you have, i'd love to see it

i'm sure kong looked realistic enough to folks in 1938 who had never seen anything like that

ps
thats one thing the original has over this
this movie didn't quite step up its game, except for kong

In King Kong vs. Godzilla, they built a big raft and towed him to Japan or wherever. He woke up during the trip and ended up wading waist deep back to land. I think they made him significantly bigger than 25 feet in that flick.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056142/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnx0dD0xfGZiPXV8cG49MHxrdz0xfHE9a2luZyBrb25nIHZzLiBnb2R6aWxsYXxmdD0xfG14PTIwfGxtPTUwMHxjbz0xfGh0bWw9MXxubT0x;fc=1;ft=13

BTW, Kong kicked Godzilla's arse.

I agree with 90% of what reviewers said: if they replaced Kong with a Giant Chuck Noris, the T-Rex fight scene (and the rest of the island part of the movie) would have made much more sense. I mean, holy crap, those fight scenes in the movie were so bad I can't even explain it. The T-Rex fight scene should have been cut to just the final showdown where Kong rips the things jaw open. And the entire bug sequence where they start swinging from vines with guns blazing was just terrible. Everything from the stampede sequence to the end of the bugs should have been greatly shortened.

Basically, I think that I am saying that excluding the slow first hour, the entire middle of the movie, and the rushed NYC sequence, the movie was ok. The actors did their thing great, but I think Jackson took a nose dive with this one.

Delivery of the last line was shitty, but generally the slightly-toned-down-JB worked well.

The deck of the boat was big enough for the monkey, no biggie.

It dragged in places, but I thought it was decent enough.
