i mean it is obviously edited to make her look as horrible and selfish as possible. even without that 20k for herself, i would hope she woudl see the good the money would do for her children and family (after calming down of course).

I actually caught the end of that showsickening... seriously, and not even just her but the entire American church these days. Its just embarassing. We're holding a gathering over at Meredith on January 14th at 7 o'clock to basically deconstruct all this American church crap. Check it out: http://www.unbuckle.orgBasically a guy is coming to speak for a bit and then the floor is opened up for questions (anonymous and on-the-spot questions). There's a free concert at the end: Starting Tuesday is the band http://www.startingtuesday.com

^so will this be a balanced discussion, or is just one of those "hip" church things where they follow up doctrine with all the usual bs and focus on useless topics.

what the hell is the american church
12/3/2005 11:53:53 PM
^^^ its going to be focused on whatever questions are askedWhat do you mean by "balanced"?^^ its a pretty widely used description of American Christian churches in general. Some are different, most are not.
12/3/2005 11:57:56 PM
well, i grew up in a church background, and i know events like this usually stay within the "church circle", and usually any non-appealing facts will be omitted, save the big points like virginity and whatnot. i also know that "balanced" is considered a dirty word in most churches (or the ones i was in), and it usually means having to hear from a side you dont want to hear from. you cant act like that side doesnt exist, and sometimes, they could be telling you more truth about life than what youve been taught through church (notice i said "church" not "god", "christianity, or "the bible"; or any religion for that matter). sometimes it takes a real challenge to your faith, and true self-examination, to really get what you need to get out of christianity. it took me leaving the organized church for me to learn god's truth for myself. its full of too much bs from all sides these days for anyone to really achieve any true peach, imho.[Edited on December 4, 2005 at 12:21 AM. I think this event is pretty much the exact opposite of what you've experienced with the church. The goal is to fill the place with people who are frustrated or angry with the church. The only reason we'd encourage Christians to go is so they too can understand what's wrong with many organized churches today.. especially in the Bible Belt.. and expose some of the misconceptions around Christianity (i.e. Christian does not equal republican) I doubt virginity will even be brought up actually. This is more of an intellectual than emotional thing. To get more of an idea of where we're going with it, check out http://www.donaldmillerwords.com/resources.php and read some excerpts from his books. Also, check out http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/031026345X/102-5792619-4474559?v=glance&n=283155&n=507846&s=books&v=glance and read the editor's notePost modern Christianity is a pretty new concept that hasn't really hit the Bible Belt yet.

post-modern Christianity. my God, what have we come to?
12/4/2005 12:31:53 AM

well, you know, I don't think its the faith that needs to be changed, but thats just me.
12/4/2005 12:41:07 AM
and what would that mean?
12/4/2005 12:43:47 AM
well, obviously, if Christianity "has" to become "post-modern," somethings weird. I understand the world is changing, but it always has been changing - but Christianity at its core has never needed to change.but thats probably not what you meant by it, I'm sure.
12/4/2005 12:47:56 AM
Correct. That's not what I meant and I suppose we could argue postmodernity all night but what I am refering to as "post-modern Christianity" is a deconstruction of what the "church" has built up to be what is known as Christianity today and a reconstruction of the original intentions of the faith. It goes farther than adding a guitar or a hip young preacher. It questions every act and motivation of the church and its doctrine. It encourages questioning and doubt.(I can't tell if I'm making sense any more. It's been a long week and it's way past my bedtime) [Edited on December 4, 2005 at 12:54 AM. Reason : .]

o, the back to the basics I like. a lot.but remember, some of the stuff we've accumulated as a church along the way arent that bad.
12/4/2005 1:03:06 AM
some... but its still important to rethink it all. Not saying throw it all out.. but just investigate it.you should check it out... the event I mean-->http://www.unbuckle.org (website is going to be updated soon)[Edited on December 4, 2005 at 1:11 AM. Reason : .]

well, yea, hold it up to the original teachings.and speaking of church, I have to get up for that sometime. i'm going to bed.(prehaps we could continue this conversation some other time?)

me too... the early service.yes, perhaps.

good griefi'm a liberal Christianbut this idea sounds really really stupid to me
12/4/2005 1:37:04 AM
i'd like to see churches be more like 1st century churchesthis sounds like the complete opposite of that
12/4/2005 1:38:25 AM
if paul walked into a church today, hed totally be like "wtf?"
12/4/2005 1:53:18 AM
hahe'd look at the church bulletin and be like "whats a lock in? do we drag the lost in to lock them up until they accept the blessing of the Lord?"uh, no, thats where we lock all the youth in the church so they are away from parties and debauchery"oh, you mean the parites and debauchery with the lost people? you guys are crazy, wheres the wine?"well, we don't actually have wine, we think all alcohol is a sin"you what?"
12/4/2005 1:58:19 AM
i like Robin Williams' take on the second coming "Jesus is gonna come back, but this time, hes comin as a big black guy named Jesse, and noone in the church is gonna know what to do, theyre gonna go mad"

(well, I was saying that to Woodfoot. It's kind of funny, but Paul was the guy who brought the Word to my ancestors).

yes

^ Please watch the history or discovery channel the next time a special on Jesus is on since I know you probably wont research the subject yourself. You will find out that many writings document the works Jesus did, not just the Bible. Weather you call it reliable or not is your choice.
12/4/2005 5:58:34 PM
I'm not saying I don't believe that a man named jesus probably did exist. I'm also not saying that everything in the Bible (Or whatever other source you're talking about) is incorrect. I was addressing her saying that many sources "reference god," as if this is some sort of proof of his/her/its existence.
