I never knew anything about Rent. I wondered what it was about after seeing the beginning of Team America. So now that the movie came out, I started reading some reviews and plot synopsii (or whatever). No wonder they made fun of that show. From what I've read, the story flies in the face of the principle of personal responsibility that Parker and Stone seem to embrace.

what i was reading was that alot of the beginning of the movie(which took place over 4 days) is only set as taking place during one long night(on stage)

well the story of rent as a whole is set during the span of one year. christmas 89-christmas 1990. the movie definitly made the jump seem very large and random, but i'm sure on stage its a little more clear of whats going on.

I actually think the movie was easier to understand what was going on... It is kinda vague how the time flow works, but here goes:

starts Dec. 24th and it's pretty easy to understand time up through new years... then they break into, "Without You," and you see time moving (Rosario Dawson aka Mimi is shivering in the rain while she starts to use again, the life support people are dying off 1 by 1, and you can tell Angel is getting worse while AIDS kills his/her body)... from what I can tell, during that song, it goes from January 1st up through October 31st... Then at the grave site, they say their goodbyes, and Roger leaves for Santa Fe, which brings us Mark and Roger's duet, "What you Own." During that song, it goes from November 1st through December 24th... The song ends with Roger returning...

I hope that helps

Isn't that the damned truth.

By the way, I thought the selection for Angel was awesome.

Very impressive movie on the whole.

that's the craziest she's ever done that scene... I've seen it many times on broadway, and 2 times when Idina played "Maureen," and it was never that crazy... didn't have the TV's either like the movie had... that shit was hilarious...

That was the dude who originated the role. Of the 8 main characters everyone but Joanne and Mimi are the original Broadway cast members.

I thought it was cool that the same dog Angel had killed was the one the people were having a funeral for at the begining of La Vie Boheme.

I really liked "Rent," the whole song was just real cool, with all the people throwing the papers on fire and stuff, it really stood out. That and "Without You" I would say were my favorites.

^^I gotta disagree with that one ("Rent"). Don't get me wrong, the movie was amazing, but I thought that song was just silly. Here they are complaining about the cold and then they go throwing stuff that would've keep them warm out of the window. I mean really, who throws burning shit out of the window? I just thought it was really overdramatized.

Q for those who've seen the Broadway production: How did "Seasons of Love" tie into the story? Cause in the movie it was more of a prologue than dialogue.

Season's of Love was not the first scene on the stage like it was in the movie... It came in the middle of the stage production... I feel bad for not knowing this, but it's either the last scene of the 1st act or the first scene of the 2nd act... I think it's the latter though...

and my favorite 2 songs from the movie were "La Vie Boheme" and "Take Me Or Leave Me." I also really liked "I Should Tell You."

^Agreed with the song choices!

"Seasons of Love" opens the second act in a similar fashion to the one in the movie.

^^I dunno if you include "Another Day "within "I should tell you" since they since those two together, but I really like that song and "La Vie Boheme" was my second fav.

BTW, I found the movie a lot easier to understand than the play, bc once you got lost in the play it wasn't really like you could get picked back up and for me, it was really easy to get lost. Oh, I also really likes "Take me or Leave me" probably bc I love Idina. I really loved her in "Wicked", now they should make that into a movie.

I'd have to go with "Rent" and "I'll Cover You (Reprise)" just because I liked the way the funeral was done.

I was pretty into the play back when I was 16 or 17, so I saw the movie.

It's a good reproduction of the musical into a film, but I wouldn't in any way say it's a great film. Some songs were great, some were crap, and I know Idina Menzell played Maureen in the original stage cast, but that bitch is BUSTED.

I have no intention of seeing the movie or the play. But still, this LA Times review of it is about the funniest review I've read this year:
