I never knew anything about Rent. I wondered what it was about after seeing the beginning of Team America. So now that the movie came out, I started reading some reviews and plot synopsii (or whatever). No wonder they made fun of that show. From what I've read, the story flies in the face of the principle of personal responsibility that Parker and Stone seem to embrace.

i'm curious how it's done on stage, but half of that movie didn't do anything for me
11/27/2005 10:23:24 PM
what i was reading was that alot of the beginning of the movie(which took place over 4 days) is only set as taking place during one long night(on stage)
11/27/2005 10:59:24 PM
yeah, i was curious how the timeflow workedfor awhile it was christmas to new years and then suddenly it's halloween, wtf was that?
11/27/2005 11:02:12 PM
well the story of rent as a whole is set during the span of one year. christmas 89-christmas 1990. the movie definitly made the jump seem very large and random, but i'm sure on stage its a little more clear of whats going on.

I loved to movie... but the whole time I kept hearing "everyone has aids" from Team America playing in my head

did anyone else burst out laughing when that one women was talking about how she was underneath the cow and then made the sucking sound. The theater definetely busted out laughing.
11/28/2005 11:17:18 AM
Honestly, I thought that whole scene was hilarious.A good chunk of that movie was pretty funny. Mike
11/28/2005 12:07:04 PM
i was crackin up at that scene. most people in the theatre were laughin too.
11/28/2005 12:11:00 PM
that's the craziest she's ever done that scene... I've seen it many times on broadway, and 2 times when Idina played "Maureen," and it was never that crazy... didn't have the TV's either like the movie had... that shit was hilarious...

I thought it was cool that the same dog Angel had killed was the one the people were having a funeral for at the begining of La Vie Boheme. ]
11/28/2005 3:20:11 PM
^^ I wasn't aware of that, thanks for the info Mike
11/28/2005 7:04:17 PM
bttt What was y'alls favorite scene? I honestly can't choose it was so amazing.
12/10/2005 12:08:51 AM
I really liked "Rent," the whole song was just real cool, with all the people throwing the papers on fire and stuff, it really stood out. That and "Without You" I would say were my favorites.
12/10/2005 12:34:47 AM
La Vie Bohem or Take Me Or Leave Me
12/10/2005 1:02:11 AM
^^I gotta disagree with that one ("Rent"). Don't get me wrong, the movie was amazing, but I thought that song was just silly. Here they are complaining about the cold and then they go throwing stuff that would've keep them warm out of the window. I mean really, who throws burning shit out of the window? I just thought it was really overdramatized.Q for those who've seen the Broadway production: How did "Seasons of Love" tie into the story? Cause in the movie it was more of a prologue than dialogue.
12/10/2005 1:22:37 AM
Season's of Love was not the first scene on the stage like it was in the movie... It came in the middle of the stage production... I feel bad for not knowing this, but it's either the last scene of the 1st act or the first scene of the 2nd act... I think it's the latter though...and my favorite 2 songs from the movie were "La Vie Boheme" and "Take Me Or Leave Me." I also really liked "I Should Tell You."
12/10/2005 1:50:17 AM
^Agreed with the song choices!"Seasons of Love" opens the second act in a similar fashion to the one in the movie.
12/10/2005 8:27:56 AM
^^I dunno if you include "Another Day "within "I should tell you" since they since those two together, but I really like that song and "La Vie Boheme" was my second fav.BTW, I found the movie a lot easier to understand than the play, bc once you got lost in the play it wasn't really like you could get picked back up and for me, it was really easy to get lost. Oh, I also really likes "Take me or Leave me" probably bc I love Idina. I really loved her in "Wicked", now they should make that into a movie.[Edited on December 10, 2005 at 2:23 PM. Reason : .]

I'd have to go with "Rent" and "I'll Cover You (Reprise)" just because I liked the way the funeral was done.
12/11/2005 11:51:33 AM
I was pretty into the play back when I was 16 or 17, so I saw the movie. It's a good reproduction of the musical into a film, but I wouldn't in any way say it's a great film. Some songs were great, some were crap, and I know Idina Menzell played Maureen in the original stage cast, but that bitch is BUSTED.

I have no intention of seeing the movie or the play. But still, this LA Times review of it is about the funniest review I've read this year:http://www.calendarlive.com/movies/chocano/cl-et-rent23nov23,0,2207545.story
