i understand what you mean jb, but what people own computing wise isnt very clear. i guess it just depends who you are. my point still stands about multiplayer being cheaper (4 ppl one box, or 4x ppl on X boxes....hoho get it), even with xboxlive subscription included. i still think that for many, upgrading to get said performance would cost more each time than purchasing the system. say i got a computer when the ps1 came out, then upgraded at ps2 and ps3. i think the upgrades would cost more to get the same performance than the system would (cuz the graphics card alone would probably be 300-400 bucks).another less valid point is that, as a kid, you might only have 1 family comp thus making other ppl need it for the other tasks you mentioned (thus you spent money but cannot play the game at any time you could a console). i know we are more talking about unlimited budget/use hypotheticals here, but its worth mentioning.

actually i have that problem now heh. if i want surround sound and whatnot i have to play downstairs (im currently at home), which is constantly taken. in general though tv's are cheaper than seperate computers heh.

enough do to keep alienware in buisness, it's still silly to compare them to x-box and stuff, which was a point I made a page or so back.[Edited on November 7, 2005 at 5:08 PM. Reason : ]

i see where he's coming from now. i went to walmart and the display unit was rather unimpressive versus the pics and vids ive seen. the ghost recon one looked nice though.then again the original xbox had a lot of meh games at first but really got some sexy one as ppl realized its potential.
11/7/2005 5:32:56 PM
is there anywhere reputable that i could preorder one from and still get it on the initial ship date?

Are the demos at BB and WalMart on HDTV? That would be a big difference.
11/8/2005 10:38:17 AM
i know the one at EB games is on hdtv and it still looks unimpressive.i mean you have to consider that if you're comparing it to a computer, hdtv really won't make that big of a difference since computer resolutions have been better than hdtv for yearsand even if it weren't on hdtv, none of my gripes are hdtv relevant. there were just far too few polygons in the game i saw for me to be impressed. hdtv has no bearing on polygon count.[Edited on November 8, 2005 at 10:48 AM. again after seeing the playable demos, he's right. i dont think that means much, but i do think the game choices for the demo units were poor (though again the ghost recon one looked nice).

the display at BB atleast at glenwood is in high definition on a 23" samsung lcd

So everyone is comparing it to the PC. What about the original x-box? It's starting to sound like the next generation isn't really leaps and bounds above existing stuff.Remember when the same games were coming out for the NES/SNES & SMS/Genesis? There were huuuuge differences between the two versions of the same game. That created a big incentive to buy the next gen console. Sounds like that gap is decreasing sharply. If they offered the same game titles on the x-box as they will offer on the 360 I'd guess that a lot of people would be content to stick with the original x-box. Now it looks as if all next generation consoles only offer slightly better graphics. There really haven't been any 'leaps and bounds' advancments in video games in a while - at least not like there were 10-12 years ago.[Edited on November 9, 2005 at 9:20 AM. Reason : -]

diminishing returns.also, blame software until recently the bottleneck was hardware. however, we're right about at a point of inflection where the limiting factor is the inability of a programmer to make use of multiple cores and other powerful hardware
11/9/2005 10:50:40 AM
lazy programmers. i dunno though, the ps3 demos looked pretty damn nice. also the condemned videos i watched looked pretty good texture/model wise. just gonna wait it out for now.
11/9/2005 11:25:01 AM
Any disapointing visuals are 100% the fault of software. And CoD2 is a fucking terrible way to demo any platform (pc or console). Not only does it bear the unmistakable 4 year old apperance of the Quake 3 engine, but its a fucking terrible game to boot. The machines power wont be tested until we see something like the Unreal Engine 3 running on it.

Yea, you can pretty much count on the release games to underrepresent the power of the system. Also, this is a bit of a hurried launch.

that water balloon commercial kicks so much ass
11/10/2005 12:24:45 PM
Indeed it does Wood, that kind of exemplifies the feeling of playing online games... until the 12 year punks come online and start being retarded.
11/10/2005 1:28:06 PM
i havent seen it. what is this "water balloon commercial" you speak so highly of?
11/10/2005 1:34:37 PM
channel or show it came on would be appreciated.

It came on during a commercial break last night while watching Lost on ABC.

So sad that one of the games that would supposedly show off the power of the system in terms of graphics AND ability to handle complex physics, AI, and scripting without missing a fram was TES IV: Oblivion, which is being delayed till feb 2006...[Edited on November 10, 2005 at 7:44 PM. Reason : ]

There is a new jump rope commercial now. I think it's just as cool as the water balloon one.

no need to advertise much, the intentional shortage is getting free advertising out of the media
