I think the phrase "You can't judge a book by its cover" comes into play here.

I mean, who cares if a female recommended it? Not ALL females think the reason they were put on this planet was to swoon over babies and romance and Oprah.

I'm pretty sure the title of the thread was You must read "A Million Little Pieces" not You must read "A Million Little Pieces" because Oprah said so

Read what interests you.

I won't read this book because reading about lame drug addicts with no self control is depressing. I would rather read Paris Hilton's book. (It has fun pictures)

well good lord if you can't read a book because it depresses you then you need to go ahead and kill yourself now. there are plenty more depressing things out there.

I'm suprised to find this many readers on TWW. Or people that can read for that matter.

Let her suggest a book for christ's sake.

Basically this "memoir" is decidedly UNTRUE...do check out both thesmokinggun.com piece and USA Today's follow-up reporting bcs so much of his capital-C Criminal activity is totally made-up...James Frey is a former sniveling rich kid frat boy (no offense to rich-kid frat boys!) who did some drugs in college, got popped a few times for misdemeanor DUI, but couldn't sell his piece of shit novel to a publishing house, so he repackages it as a memoir and...ta-dah!...Oprah is kissing his loser ass..what a freakin' tool!

^^ if it was being peddled as a novel, rather than autobiographical fact. Basically, he deceived a fuckload of people to make a buck. I'd wager that if he had pushed it as a fictional novel, he'd never have made the Oprah bookclub, which basically is what sold the book.

EDIT:

Quote :
"Of course, if "A Million Little Pieces" was fictional, just some overheated stories of woe, heartache, and debauchery cooked up by a wannabe author, it probably would not get published. As it was, Frey's original manuscript was rejected by 17 publishers before being accepted by industry titan Nan Talese, who runs a respected boutique imprint at Doubleday (Talese reportedly paid Frey a $50,000 advance). According to a February 2003 New York Observer story by Joe Hagan, Frey originally tried to sell the book as a fictional work, but the Talese imprint "declined to publish it as such." A retooled manuscript, presumably with all the fake stuff excised, was published in April 2003 amid a major publicity campaign."

From thesmokinggun article. That pretty much sums it up.

after reading My Friend Leonard, it was obvious that it was fake. some of the stuff in there is ridiculous. so i started guessing that some/all of million little pieces was fake too. then this report thing came out.

I'm in the middle of it...I'm reading it because I work as a substance abuse counselor and do not really consider myself religious...and I was interested to see his take on the Twelve Steps...because while I think it can work for many people, there are plenty of addicts who are not going to buy into it. So far, I'm enjoying the book...but I like this kind of thing, so...that's me.

I was kind of taking it with a grain of salt even before I heard about this today. It does seems that if he had actually done all the stuff in the book, chances are he'd never be out of jail...much less a celebrity, at this point.

Ha...read the CNN story...there's a LICKING County?? That is awesome.

Hmmm: I am pondering that...since the book was written in stream of consciousness, if some of the things he wrote about were going on in his head.
