Ya know that picture of the Sears Tower isn't even close to scale...

I think what's important is that the huge eyesore next to Crabtree Mall is going away. I have been hoping for that for some time now.
10/26/2005 4:40:27 PM
^^I'm teaching Proportions and Ratios to my 8th grade Algebra I class. I think you should sit in.
10/26/2005 4:44:20 PM
i hope they go with Thyssen Krupp(used to be Dover) for the elvators rather than Otis or Schindler(formerly westinghouse)

10/26/2005 5:29:56 PM
i'd rather keep the eyesore than back up the glenwood/beltline intersection even more. i have to go thru that every day.
10/26/2005 6:39:50 PM
the newer sections of 540 will probably be open to traffic before this thing is open to the public. For a building that size you are talking 2 years from groud brekaing to finish if everythign goes perfect and NOTHING gets behind. That is running double shift or tripple shift 7 days a week. Traffic there will DECREASE, as people will be MORE likley to go OUT and hit 540 and go around.
10/26/2005 6:46:37 PM
i still think unless they take out that stop light just before the beltline on glenwood, then traffic in that area will never get better. 540 is a 15 minute drive in the opposite direction if you're going from glenwood to hillsborough st/cary/etc. i have a hard time believing that opening new sections of 540 will really change much in that area.
10/26/2005 6:49:55 PM
The reason they put it in N. Raleigh is b/c it is only 4 miles form the RBC Center. This is the only way we can accomodate/attract "high profile" clients for bigger sporting events. Heck if I had a house around there my property value would def go up.

im excited about this project. i saw the little clip on wral about it and it looks like a cool building/design with a lot to offer. the site is the only thing that is a little disconcerting about it, but i say itll be good for the city anyway.
10/26/2005 8:36:16 PM
why do super tall buildings have that spike on top? just to make them taller or does it help with balance / airplanes or something?
10/26/2005 8:38:26 PM
why is everyone so worried about our skyline?why do you care if it doesnt look as good as othersfuck skylines

10/26/2005 8:52:14 PM
yeah they do it to make them tallerits like a dick for a building
10/26/2005 8:58:16 PM
This is awesome for Raleigh, and I'm really excited about it. Raleigh needs an iconic building. The location for this is perfect, as it is so convenient to everything, and there is a crappy hotel in that same spot right now. The whole area around the mall is being renovated with new shops and offices. The neighborhoods around this area are all really excited b/c it is going to look so much better there.
10/26/2005 9:01:18 PM
^^Penis hat.
10/26/2005 9:12:26 PM
wow. that's a pussy ass building right there
10/26/2005 10:17:17 PM
my ex-boss is building the mid-rise for the convention center...its supposed to be "the" hotel in raleigh, like "6" stars, top of the line...he's using his pet chef for the food...rooftop bar/pool is a possibilityTHE LAFAYETTE it will be called

Here is a newsflash....traffic is not bad in charlotte or raleigh. Traffic and conjestion isn't a bad thing. No matter how wide you make your roads and how many roads you prevent from intersecting, you will still reach conjestion. The problem is that we depend on cars to go everywhere and that instead of having smaller streets connecting, we have to go to the main thoroughfairs. This is due to post ww3 ideas of how to develope. conjestion isn't even a bad thing. What is more important is that our roads don't become huge highways due to traffic engineers that only think about moving quickly. these ideas kill neighborhoods. Look at independence as it becomes a highway right at 277 or capitol close to downtown (or capitol period)[Edited on October 26, 2005 at 11:03 PM. Reason : ]

so for the people that remember fran - do you guys remember where flooding was real bad? it was right where they are going to put this thing
10/26/2005 11:05:18 PM
HOLY SHIT! 480ft??? damn i've never been that high before....i can't wait!
10/26/2005 11:07:43 PM
The design puts cars in the region that is flooded, not areas of residence etc. If you can't move your car, you suck at life.[Edited on October 26, 2005 at 11:09 PM. Reason : you are kidding right^]

Personally, I think downtown is a piece of trash. I know some people think culture is important, but I'd have most of the buildings torn down and reconstructed before I would start building extra buildings on top of it. Maybe Glenwood could be the "New Downtown"
10/27/2005 12:28:32 AM
Hey, that actually looks kind of cool.It would add a hell of a lot of character to the area.
10/27/2005 12:40:41 AM
i like this idea. for you skyline people- this helps our skyline. raleigh will soon have mutlitple skylines l (crabtree, north hill, ttc and downtown - snf each have big time plans for more tall buildings). who says you have to have one centralized skyline? look at l.a.also notice that capital cities usually (with the exception of the 8 cities below) tend to have smaller skylines. (i assume its because all the government buildings are about 8 stories tall) but raleighs is one of the bigger ones-atlanta-minneapolis-indianapolis-pheonix-denver-boston-nashville-columbusconsidering those are the only state capitals with skylines more impressive than raleighs and they are all more centralized cities than raleigh and these along wiht many more are much more populus cities than raleigh; raleighs not that bad.traffic will be worse but thats a price to pay for moving raleigh up to a higher level. there is no way opening the eastern and southern portions of 540 will help this at all. 540 has been complete from 40-capital for a while. i love the new progress energy plaza, and fayetteville street plans.is the new convention center gonna be an arena? thats what downtown needs.i dont know much about how city planning works but why in the world do big developments like this get DECLINED that is just crazy to me. is there more reasoning behind it than just hicks who want to keep farmland in raleigh?if anybody has information on the following plans please share it-tall hotel across from rbc next to cardinal gibbons-tall condos at norht hills-several tall office buildings, hotels and apartments at ttc-new plans for highwoods?[Edited on October 27, 2005 at 12:53 AM. 10/27/2005 12:50:19 AM
yeah they wanna keep the farmland over by crabtree
10/27/2005 12:51:29 AM
they are still talking about the posibility of a supertowoer, or a progress energy phase 3 on the block across from the new oneNewP2 OldP1NewP2 OldP1NewP2 OldP1??P3?? ??P3?? ??P3??

The city needs to build up rather than out. 540 does nothing but create more sprawl, just like all outer belts.I like the design. I would rather it be downtown though.[Edited on October 27, 2005 at 1:05 AM. Reason : ]

buliding up would be a very very very very very bad idea in raleigh until they build Mass Transit systems. like rail, subway, buses. The area will be too densly populated for the highway system we got. Even with 50 lanes on each side.
10/27/2005 1:32:02 AM
also crabtree creek was dug(or whatever the term for making streams deeper is) so much deeper that it would take alot more rain than we got in fran to flood again. it will never flood like that again unless a levy breaks or something
10/27/2005 2:34:40 AM
haha what a stupid ideaRaleigh is such a joke sometimes
