I went to the Blue Mountains by myself several times and loved them. I just hiked all over the place. It was cozy.

Both times I've been to the Reef we went to Fitzroy Island. http://www.ozhorizons.com.au/qld/cairns/fitzroy/fi.htmUnfortunately they've decided they can make more money by building bigger things... so no accomodations for a while, and it'll be all... different. I *liked* the little bunkhouses! http://www.greenislandresort.com.au/ is another island near there. Both of these are a fairly short boat ride away from Cairns. As to wildlife, yeah, Australia has some ridiculously poisonous animals, but you ought to be fine as long as you heed any warnings posted... My dad and I both saw stonefish (fish that sit on the bottom and have spines that can pierce through a tennis shoe and get you with some nasty toxin) so watch where you step on the bottom, they blend in far too well. Watch where you step on dry land, too -- I had the bad luck to step on a snake while on Fitzroy Island... scared me silly, I think I scared the poor snake silly, it didn't bite me but instead bashed its head against my foot (was wearing sandals). I bolted back into the room screaming "Snake! Foot! Snake! Foot!" until it was finally established that though I was freaked out, I had not been bitten. Turned out it was a young green tree snake. No poisonous snakes on Fitzroy. *whew*If you want a somewhat informative and very amusing read about Australia, try "In a Sunburned Country" by Bill Bryson. And yeah, you probably won't like Vegemite. I like the stuff, keep a jar of it at my apartment and eat it every few weeks... but that's probably because I got started on it when I was 2.

Read In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson. He just randomly travels around and writes about all the interesting stuff he finds, and his books are always filled with tons of behind the scenes information that he researches on politics, history, religion, and all manner of interesting crap.A great book by one of my favorite authors, it pretty much single-handedly convinced me to go to Australia.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0767903862/002-7747847-8447233?v=glance&n=283155&v=glance
