^^don't be upset b/c you already KNOW the Mets won't make the playoffs AGAIN in 2006
11/1/2005 12:43:44 PM
If they sign Wagner and Furcal I'd be willing to put money they finish in the playoffs...V no I wouldn't have put money on it because there were still GLARING holes. Like the closer position and a true #2 hitter..[Edited on November 1, 2005 at 12:47 PM. Reason : f]

I bet you would have said it last year with Beltran and Pedro too...

I think Reyes will be a gold glove SS. Furcal FINALLY got better at short this year but he averaged in the high 20s every year prior. Reyes has better range and an equal arm (yes they have the best 2 arms in the NL for SS). Reyes career fielding percentage at SS is 10 points higher then Furcal too. In 2005, Reyes first full year, he only had 18 errors. Until this year Furcal never had less then 23...That and Furcal already said that he would switch to play in New York.

per Boston HeraldThe Red Sox and Mets have opened up discussions again about a Manny Ramirez trade. The Red Sox would be willing to give up Ramirez for Mike Cameron, and 2 of the following 3: Heilman, Petit, and Milledge (the obvious 2 would be Heilman and Petit b/c Cliff Floyd is an obvious stopgap to Milledge aside Beltran). If I were both sides I'd do this. This solidifies the bullpen next year for the Red Sox (with Heilman) time gives them 3 young rotation guys for the future (Papelbon, Petit, and Heilman), and allows them to resign Damon for LF if the Mets take on all of Manny contract. This benefits the Mets by ridding the team of a true CFer being paid 8M/year to play out of position and by giving them the true cleanup hitter they have so desperately needed. If they go out and sign Wagner, which is a virtual certainty in my mind, then the loss of Heilman is easily recouped. I still am not 100% on it but I am beginning to like it given I am a Mets and Red Sox fan (although Mets first by a shred).

I really hope Furcal re-signs with the Braves... that makes me kinda nervous.
11/8/2005 9:41:17 AM
Oh I meant to post that. The Mets are prepared to offer Furcal 38 million over 5 years on Friday (the first day free agents can talk money with other teams) per WFAN in New York. The Braves have shown some hesitance to give him more then a 3 year deal but I'm not sure 38MM over 5 will do it for him. I don't know the particulars though..
11/8/2005 9:45:11 AM
Well, Cox has the uncanny ability to trade players when they're about ready to hit that steady stroll downhill into the end of their careers. I think furcal has some good years ahead of him though... I hope he stays on board. Keeping Andruw Jones on after 2007 will be tough too.
11/8/2005 9:47:37 AM
There should be money left to keep Jones after 2007. I think Tim Hudson is the only player with a contract through 2008.
11/8/2005 1:29:23 PM
furcal is as good as gonesigning him to a 5 year deal is ridiculous, the mets are just throwing away moneynow if we can just deal estrada and thomson
11/8/2005 2:49:46 PM
Why? He is relatively young still. Is it any more stupid then locking up perenially injured Chipper Jones longterm? Or when the Mets signed Piazza longterm knowing at the end his body would be breaking down? Now obviously Furcal isn't as valuable as those two but I see no problem with a longterm contract... If that is the best way to lock up a player that will help out the team A TON then why not...FYI I know Chipper still plays a ton of games but he is consitently hurt and the last 2 years it has hampered his numbers..[Edited on November 8, 2005 at 2:56 PM. 11/8/2005 2:53:35 PM
Just read that the Yankees are shopping around Jorge Posada and have no interest in trading Cano or Wang for Hunter. The likely candidate for CF, despite his attitude problems, is Milton Bradley.
11/8/2005 2:55:47 PM
chipper might not be putting up consistent numbers lately but he is a franchise-type playerand furcal is a leadoff hitter whose never hit .300 he does get on base a lot and he can steal, but he's prone to go into a deep slump and hit .200 for a month or twothe braves offered him 8m/year last offseason and he balked so unless he's just looking for a long term deal, it'll probably take at least 10m/year50m is too much for a barely average leadoff hitter no matter how good his glove is
11/8/2005 3:56:37 PM
Ernie, you know that the Braves picked up Thomson's option don't you?http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20051101&content_id=1263158&vkey=news_atl&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl
11/8/2005 4:03:22 PM
yeah hopefully they can trade him away
11/8/2005 4:05:07 PM
Who do you expect that they would trade him for? The rotation is already looking kinda weak after Smoltz and Hudson.
11/8/2005 4:14:05 PM
james, lerew, and davies are ready for the big leagueswe need some veteran bullpen help and maybe a solid utility infielderdealing thomson and/or estrada can free up some salary for free agent signings
11/8/2005 4:16:29 PM
i like raffy, and i hope he stays, but in the near future, we've got options at ss. perfect world: furcal re-signs, then when escobar or andrus are ready, we ship him or he goes elsewhere.
11/8/2005 9:41:35 PM
yeah escobar looks to be ready in another 2 years or soi think the money furcal wants would be best spent elsewhere thoughcan you imagine if escobar and marte pan out and we keep the young guys we have nowi don't see how the streak could ever come to an endTHE FUTURE IS SO BRIGHT I HAVE TO WEAR SHADES
11/8/2005 10:25:12 PM
not sure if you've heard of andrus, 16 or 17 y.o. SS from venezuela. already played in the GCL, has great defense, and a nice swing. he won't be ready for a while, but i wouldn't be surprised if we start hearing his name soon.
11/9/2005 6:57:00 AM
everything on insider and stuff I've read has Furcal goin to the Cubs, not the MetsI think the Mets should use their money elsewhere instead of overpaying for Furcal like perhaps a solid first baseman, a power hitter, and some good bullpen peeps
11/9/2005 11:35:23 AM
The Cubs signed Neifi Perez to a 2 year deal yesteday. The Mets #1 target is still Wagner though. I didn't repost that b/c I mentioned it earlier. I'd be SHOCKED if he doesn't go to Queens...

11/10/2005 12:07:33 AM
A Washington newpaper is reporting that Theo Epstein is set to become the new GM in Washingto and Cal Ripken is set to become the new team president, regardless of the ownership situation... idk about you guys but this seems a little far fetched... i don't feel like posting the link but you can find it on Foxsports
11/10/2005 2:13:35 AM
god damnthe mets are going after EVERYONEburnett, furcal, possibly delgado, wagner, jeff kent, and sorianoi've heard they'll go after danny baez if they can't get wagnerhere's to hoping they all have beltran-esque years if they sign with the mets
11/10/2005 2:19:21 PM
I think Wagner is a definite. He has almost said as much in interviews. I think he'll be signed rather quickly..the others are all up in the air. Ramon Hernandez and Benji Molina are VERY HIGH on the list too. B.J. Ryan as well..
11/10/2005 2:20:47 PM
so are the braves gonna do anything to try and keep furcal? or is he as good as gone?
11/10/2005 2:22:14 PM
please leave ryan for usthx^he's pretty much gonehe wants around $10m a year, braves haven't made an offer yet but it will probably be in the neighborhood of $8m and not nearly as long-term as he'd likefurcal has said he'd stay in atlanta for less than he's worth, but he probably won't when the cubs and mets starting throwing wells fargo trucks at him[Edited on November 10, 2005 at 2:24 PM. 11/10/2005 2:22:30 PM
sombitch! any ideas who could replace him in atlanta?
11/10/2005 2:27:36 PM
probably betemit until he fizzles outread the thread
11/10/2005 2:31:19 PM
I heard the Mets are going after Raffy Palmeiro, Oil Can Boyd, Harmon Killebrew, Rollie Fingers, Kurt Rambis, and Jim Henson[Edited on November 10, 2005 at 4:33 PM. Reason : asdf das]
11/10/2005 4:28:10 PM
Yanks have started negotiating with Matsui's agent. Have until Nov. 15 to resign him.
11/10/2005 4:37:49 PM
Yankees apparently interested in making furcal their center fielder. Braves better hurry up or furcal will be gone within a week.
11/10/2005 5:52:28 PM
^^^well, they are interested in julio franco.seems to me like the mets are the yankees lite.
11/10/2005 6:14:36 PM
anyone have espn insider and can post the latest rumor central?
11/10/2005 7:08:46 PM
^^^ hahaha...where did you hear that?That's a good one.
11/10/2005 7:09:37 PM
Interesting the Braves are reported to be inquiring about Julio Lugo for SS. Which means two things: Furcal is probably gone and they don't feel comfortable enough with Betemit to make him a fulltime guy yet. It should be interesting to see how this plays out.I think at this point, given the news out from Omar Minaya that Furcal will be a Cub (ridiculous rumors from the Yankees notwithstanding)..
11/11/2005 11:26:01 AM
julio lugo is a decent replacement. he's got good speed and he can bunt. i don't know much about his defense, but there are worse players out there
11/11/2005 11:31:02 AM
^^^CBS Sportsline. I know they give a lot of crap information and I also thought it was funny. Just thought I'd throw it out there
11/11/2005 4:06:30 PM

Yanks resigned Matsui for $52M over four years.
11/16/2005 8:33:00 AM
11/16/2005 8:41:43 AM
Buster Olney is reporting a trade completed b/t the Mets and Padres that will send Mike Cameron to SD for Otsuka (and possibly Nady as well)..
11/16/2005 1:44:49 PM
How will that affect a possible Manny Deal, since I thought Cameron was a likely part of any deal?
