suprised noone has mentioned virgil donati[Edited on July 8, 2005 at 9:58 PM. Reason : that can be your fifth one, ian]

^ Virgil used to be my absolute favorite, but he's too much of a machine for my tastes now. The only thing I can stand to listen to of his other than solo stuff is when he played with Vai (which was incredible to see).I would probably go with:1) Bonzo - Now that I play a 26" kick, he is my God2) Jeff Porcaro - this guy is the most mature drummer I've ever heard. His resume is incredible.. take a look: http://www.frontiernet.net/~cybraria/jptracks.htm3) Danny Carey - not much to say... just amazing4) Steve Smith - extremely tasteful and creative5) Buddy Rich - Kind of a turn off that he couldn't read music, but he still had amazing chops and creativity.

dave lombardo = fast kicks, thats it. probably one of the most overrated drummers i can think of.
7/9/2005 11:10:58 PM

^No opinion, but im not a fan of Meshuggah
7/11/2005 8:49:25 AM
have you really sat down and listened to them? they're fucking insanethey don't make good background music, it's the kind you need to devote some attention to to appreciate. but goddamn is it incredibleherb helps too
7/11/2005 8:51:42 AM
1. John Bonham2. Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience)3. Keith Moon (Who)4. Alex Van Halen5. Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead)I have heard that Jason Bonham is pretty good. However, I have not heard him. I believe he plays with the Led Zepp cover band Zoso but am unsure. And Animal gets an honorable mention of course.[Edited on July 11, 2005 at 10:20 PM. Reason : Animal]
7/11/2005 10:17:32 PM
^^Yeah, i have. Too chaotic, in my opinion. I dont like music where the time signature changes every 4 bars. To me, thats gone beyond tasteful and is trying to be as technical as possible for the sake of it. I'd prefer music that can settle into a good groove, with the compound times uses for fill ins and transitions

7/11/2005 11:04:31 PM
7/12/2005 1:29:17 AM
^^^ haha well to be technical, the time signature often changes ever measure but that's the beauty of it, to write something that isn't based on the standard 4/4 + melody...granted, it's not exactly chill music, but that's not what i listen to it for. it's nonmelodic and all rhythmic, it's just a completely different style of music based on rhythm instead of melody. but to each his own...maybe it's the drummer in me that's being appealed to

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Vinnie Paul (Pantera)
7/12/2005 4:02:47 PM
I grew up listening to jazz and fusion drummers, who usually play entirely with polyrhythms, yet manage to keep a grove such that the song isnt changing pace every other measure. That kind of disjointed rhythm is also a big reason why i despise alot of hardcore and metalcore.[Edited on July 12, 2005 at 4:26 PM. Reason : ]

just some clips from meshuggah's stuff. by FAR not my favorite examples of his drumming, but i ran across them online and i figured i'd stick them in here for your aural pleasurehttp://www.meshuggah.net/samples/none02.mp3http://www.meshuggah.net/samples/dei03.mp3http://www.meshuggah.net/samples/dei07.mp3http://www.meshuggah.net/samples/chaos07.mp3http://www.meshuggah.net/samples/chaos08.mp3[Edited on July 18, 2005 at 9:48 AM. 7/19/2005 12:16:10 AM
Probably for good reason

7/22/2005 10:40:11 AM
I listed to that Meshuggah stuffMeh. It sounds like there's some 10 year old bangin on the drums. Yeah, I know that the guy knows exactly what he's doing, but it still sounds the same to me.
7/22/2005 10:56:10 AM
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....you're entitled to your opinion

Travis Barker is way above any of the other MTV band or pop-punk drummers out there that I can think of, but I wouldn't put him on a top 5 list. I'll give him credit for being really fucking good though. I've seen some videos of him solo'ing and he can definately rock a trap set.I'm a drummer...Here is my set, although it is set up very differently now than when that pic was taken:
7/25/2005 12:26:14 PM
figured i'd ad my set to this thread anyway, continue with the drummers
8/31/2005 9:30:59 PM
In no particular order:Neal Pert (Rush-need I say more)Phil Collins (badass-very under-rated)Carter Beaufort (hope thats spelled right)Dennis Chambers (studio musician, worked with eric clapton and elton john)Jon Philip Theodore (drummer from The Mars Volta-love his freehand stuff on de-loused...)

9/1/2005 1:41:56 AM
are you people naming Dave Grohl because he plays guitar too and started a band?because Nirvana wasn't exactly known for its complex or diverse beats
9/1/2005 2:26:36 AM
hes played drums with and for about a million other bands besides nirvana...hes done drums on more than one foo fighters cd, queens of the stoneage...um i cant even remember. i tend to not like the other bands hes worked with besides the foo fighters. but hes prob played drums for more big bands than any other drummer our there hah
9/1/2005 2:28:51 AM
I just keep thinking of Nevermind where like a third of the songs on that cd start out the same way with him banging the hell out of the same drum
9/1/2005 2:33:41 AM
yea. plus that was way back in the day and the guitarparts/songs as a whole were just really straight forward. i mean there are def tons of better drummers out there than him. but with foo fighters and a lot of other stuff hes done hes just great at writing the parts that are perfect for the song. hes a great writer and rock drummer who can write the right parts to make the song sound good.so hes good in the respect that he knows the place of the percussion and has knowledge of music, not that hes extremely technical[Edited on September 1, 2005 at 2:43 AM.
