and i was referring just to repairs anyway. you usually need an appointment, only the geniuses can quote prices.

so my Home button has become almost non responsive. any tips?

If I take my phone to the Geeks because I get a no sim error a couple times a week, will they give me a new phone?
5/11/2011 12:17:28 PM
I'm amazed at how often they give out new phone. They almost never do hardware repairs on phones and software issues they can't figure out they'll give out new phones.
5/11/2011 12:20:25 PM
I took my iPhone 4 in because of a crack in the back glass. They gave me the "normally this costs $30, but we'll fix it for free today, blah blah". So they replaced the back glass in about 5-10 minutes. Overall, I was very happy they would do that, a lot of companies would say you're SOL.
5/11/2011 2:06:42 PM
16 more days until I can get rid of the worlds worst phone (BB Storm2) and finally upgrade to iPhone4...
5/11/2011 2:23:48 PM
i have a small crack in my front screen...no idea how it happened but i just noticed it...there's nothing that shows any impact point. i might try to have them switch it out for a new screen.
5/11/2011 5:26:22 PM
If it's under 1 year they should no problem, as long as you get a decent "genius"
5/11/2011 7:41:19 PM
5/11/2011 9:41:53 PM
wait, if you drop and break your phone within the first year, they'll fix it or give you a new/refurb one? I didn't think the warranty would cover that kind of stuff.
5/11/2011 10:58:43 PM
mine was good physical condition. Just the operating system wouldn't load.
5/12/2011 12:02:15 AM
^^Can't hurt to try. They have always been very helpful when I've gone in. Like I said, they replaced the cracked back glass for free (had the phone about 10 months). My wife left hers on the back of a car after pumping gas and it was runover and smashed up. We took it in (I thought the dorks were going to cry when they saw it) and they replaced it for $100, saying they could probably still salvage some parts out of it. It seems like every time there is an issue they always say they'll do it "just this one time" like somehow that time is special. On another note, I think they messed up when they replaced my back glass. The camera no longer works properly, it's like they left a clear plastic sheet on the inside of the glass. If I use the flash at all it floods the camera lens so it just comes up as a big blur. I guess I'll have to make another appointment...

5/13/2011 3:15:39 PM
^^nice!Did they give you a hard time or what? mine is so intermittent i don't know if i can reproduce it for them. Thanks for the heads up.
5/13/2011 4:21:10 PM
no need to reproduce. just tell them you have been having no sim errors for a while and as long as there isn't major damage to your phone, it shouldn't be a problem.
5/13/2011 4:28:12 PM
Went back in today. When they replaced my back glass they did leave a plastic wrapper on the inside of the phone. They were very apologetic and it only took 10 mins to get helped and out the door, even without an appointment.

5/13/2011 8:38:02 PM
what do you guys think this new "iphone 4s" will possess in terms of new features?
5/14/2011 9:25:52 PM
4s or 5? Did I miss a news article somewhere?
5/14/2011 10:00:23 PM
^A lot of the rumors have said this hardware generation is going to be a relatively mild refresh, so like the 3Gs being a spec bump of the 3G, a spec bump of the 4 will be the "4s." The iPad 2 was a pretty mild refresh, but still got a new number, so I doubt the new iPhone will be the 4s.Either way, if I were to make an uninformed guess of what to expect:A5 processor8 MP camera/1080p video4" screenSince LTE is still somewhat in its infancy in the US and the spectrum hasn't even been sold in the UK, I'd be surprised to see it on the iPhone 5. Since the iPad 2 has 512 MB of RAM, I doubt the iPhone will see a bump there either. I think iOS 5 will be the big news this generation.

Halftone is a really fun photo app. Well designed too for what all it does. Made this on the fly in about 2 min:

If anybody's not on an unlimited data plan, you should check out a program called Onavo. It basically installs a systemwide proxy that works in the background of almost all the apps you run. Any data requests get sent though Onavo's servers and shrunk down before getting sent to you. They claim it can save you as much as 80% on your data usage.

why in the world did you spend $40 on a gps app??? there are tons of free & cheap ones that work fine. what kind of gps'ing are you doing?
5/24/2011 8:26:40 PM
Actually,i think it was $30 but the free ones I tried are ok if you need gps once a month maybe but there's a huge difference between them and something like Navigon or Google's stock offering. I may use it once in a week or 5 times in a day trying to find several different job sites or offices. I also like that mine is now ON the phone and I don't have to download maps if I'm out in the mountains with little to no service (not that that was an option with google).[Edited on May 25, 2011 at 7:42 AM. i'm not talking about the preloaded google maps thing. navfree usa stores all the maps on the phone & works just like a garmin or whatever. it's free. mapquest is really good too but it doesn't store maps. ]

^^I tried both of them. Navfree just sucked. It would have to "catch up" to me all the time and several times it couldn't locate addresses. Look at the reviews for it. 2.5 stars with twice as many 1star reviews as 5 star. I downloaded Mapquest also but it force closed every time I tried to use it. It looks like they have since updated it though so it may be a viable choice now. If you look at reviews, Navigon and Tomtom are rated #1 always. There's a reason for it. With android, the stock google navigation is great and perfectly useable. It had a couple of issues but they were minor overall and you were looking at $50+ for an app to replace it that wasn't much better. That's not the case with the iPhone was my point. Some people can obviously get by with a free navigation app on the iPhone. That just wasn't me when I tested them out. With the ones that i tried, I often had to revert to the stock map app to figure out where I was after an app got me lost or couldn't find where I was trying to go. Maybe with the update to Mapquest that's changed but I don't know.
5/25/2011 5:08:29 PM
hmm, i've not had a problem with navfree.
5/25/2011 9:40:13 PM
I bought Navigon and the Traffic in-app purchase. Infinitely more useful than having to do step-by-step directions with stock Maps app.

finally updated my iOS yesterday, I can't stand how the phone vibrates twice now for textsFWP

anyone successfully replaced the front glass on the 4? mine shattered last night..
6/3/2011 10:49:15 AM
http://www.iphoneshopusa.com/iphone-4-repair-kits/132-iphone-4-diy-touch-panel-glass-screen-lcd-fix-it-kit-black.htmlI'm thinking about getting that...all of the cheap ones have bad reviews. Thoughts?
6/3/2011 1:06:33 PM
Seems reasonable. I've changed a 3Gs glass, which wasn't bad. 4 seems a little harder.
6/4/2011 7:39:16 AM
I guess I'm going to try a few apple stores first. Seems to be a mixed bag w/ some people getting their's replaced for free. Others getting charged 200 for a within one year replacement. I may just pay the 200 worst case for the benefit of having a new one before a couple business trips in the next week.
6/4/2011 9:07:20 AM
man I love the Apple store...just got my "one time" replacement. 1 yr warranty was up in 18 days and they took my shattered phone and gave me a "new" one. Score.
