Is it wrong of me to post a photo that has been so egregiously altered ITT? It happened by accident.

Hey catalyst, I love you too mang. I would give you a kiss, but I got a match tonight.

Why thank you, kind sir. I believe the gecko licking its eyeball belongs to an acquaintance of mine, saw the link earlier today. I'm really not a fan of studio reptile portraits. They usually involve either some sort of stereotypical piece of wood (as with the spiny-scaled snake) that is usually straight out of the terrarium, otherwise it's on some lame background like black velvet (practically all of the other shots). It might just be a personal preference, but I prefer to snap photos of wild specimens in their element. No shots worth sharing at the moment. Been too cot damn busy, which makes me sad.

I am in the market for a DSLR camera. I am a novice photographer. I would like the camera because I am getting married and would like to take better quality pictures with my fiance. The types of photos we will take will generally be of us sightseeing, at Wolfpack events, ect. I do not want to spend an arm and a leg. What camera would everyone recommend?I am familiar with the Nikon 5100, my dad has that camera. Other than that I do not have any other experience. Thanks!!!

^^If you are familiar with his D5100, maybe you should look at a D3100. I have shot for years with my base model D40 which is basically 2 generations behind the D3100. It will do most of the basic things and is a great smaller DSLR camera. If you have the extra hundred bucks, you might want to drop for the D5100 like your dad has. A lot better in many respects for only a small price increase. But either way you will do fine with both of those. Also just came in here to mention that I was at Southeastern Camera this week picking up a couple of little things and found a very low mileage used D7000 sitting on the shelf. Now it is sitting in my camera bag with the D40 and D200. Did a bridal shoot with it this weekend and it was fantastic. Love this thing.

^thanks for the feedback. any opinions on Canon vs. Nikon? t3, t2i or t3i?
4/1/2012 7:04:10 PM
I personally prefer Canon, but both companies make great cameras. I think when you look at comparable models, it's really about personal preference, feel and ease of use. That would be your call. Just my opinion.
4/1/2012 7:07:27 PM
^^ find the best deal and go with that...i use nikon because i found a spectacular deal on a body and lenses and then went from there...i'd have just as happily gone with canon had i found a great deal when i was lookingoutside of your initial purchases, the real money goes to purchasing lenses, not bodies[Edited on April 1, 2012 at 7:27 PM. Reason : grammar]
4/1/2012 7:26:43 PM
well try to hold each camera you are considering to see what's more comfortable to you before jumping on the first/best deal you find.
4/2/2012 4:00:04 PM
i've always wondered about that advice...i simply can't imagine there's something so drastically different between canon and nikon bodies/menus that would make one an overwhelmingly better option than another...they're simply something to get used toand yes, i had (and have since) played with both...i just can't imagine hating one so much that a person would want to pass up a good deal (if they have nothing invested in one brand or another, that is)i'm just a bad amateur, though, so i don't know anything *shrug*[Edited on April 2, 2012 at 4:17 PM. 4/2/2012 4:17:25 PM
Something to consider...You can fit Nikon Lenses to Canon bodies (without the introduction of optical elements)BUTYou CANNOT fit canon lenses to Nikon Bodies (flange distance)I prefer Nikon glass, but Canon gives me the best of both, and it doesn't really care what I put on the front of it.
4/2/2012 4:47:04 PM
get a leica
4/2/2012 4:47:07 PM
^^^I'm not sure what sort of deals you're talking about but you can pretty much find similar prices for similar quality cameras. There's no harm in going to a camera store and fucking around with various options rather than pulling the trigger on some slickdeals deal for a camera you've never touched. Some cameras absolutely feel better than others. To me at least.[Edited on April 2, 2012 at 7:11 PM. Reason : .]

speaking of a Leica, here's a pic of my girlfriend playing with her birthday present. I got her a Leica M3, partially so I could use it too. It's definitely the nicest piece of photographic equipment I've ever had my hands on.shot is my d200, 50mm lens f/5.6, ISO 400, 1/80 sec

Sure, Nikons are great, yadda yadda yadda...But when a Canon has been your tool, your instrument for several years, the subtle (and not-so-subtle) differences seem HUGE and uncomfortable. I have no problem with Nikons, I'd love to own some, but I'm a Canon shooter because it feels right.
4/4/2012 12:17:31 AM
Get a Leica
4/4/2012 12:18:26 AM
^^ right, i know...my point is that when you have no significant experience with either, you can learn to love either...so unless you just pick one up and feel a deep, spiritual connection from the beginning, you might as well go with whichever is the best value...i'm not a nikon fan, just a nikon user
4/4/2012 7:11:36 AM
I mainly picked up Nikon because my dad had a D80 and already had some glass. Why the hell would I go with a completely different system that was totally foreign to me? If I was the user asking about it earlier and I had shot my dad's D5000 and he had some equipment he would let you use, then I would go with Nikon. Just easier all around if you have already been exposed to that. If your pops had a Canon with gear I would say stick with that. Just my opinion.

Ok. It's been a while since anyone posted in here. I grabbed my Tamron 70mm-300mm lens that has a telemacro setting on it and grabbed some pictures of a wasp and a bumble bee. I was a bit bored and it was kind of fun taking the shots. Maybe you guys might enjoy them. Admittedly, this isn't the best lens in the world, but it gets the job done decently.
4/8/2012 1:01:06 PM
^ that is a vespidae wasp
4/8/2012 1:02:03 PM
Wikipedia says a "vespidae wasp" consists of 5000 species... This isn't some killer thing or something?
4/8/2012 1:05:42 PM
no, it is a family of wasps, I cannot name that species off the top of my head
