Which one was 497? I remember having to take E115 and E110 or 121 or something like that. I thought 497 was like the FE Exam Prep course.

E497F. Sat in a lecture hall a few times while Bottomley talked about something. Never did any work. Got an A. Still have no idea what that class was supposed to be about. Just 1 credit hour, though.497 and 115 seemed to be tightly linked. I remember being a freshman and not being able to tell what each class was supposed to teach me. Perhaps I learned how to log in to the Unix system in 115 at some point...[Edited on August 23, 2011 at 11:13 PM. Reason : ]

yeah E497F but I guess the F is maybe for Freshman so its not a typical 400 level course?I think I took it in Leazzar, or did I take E115 in Leazar?[Edited on August 23, 2011 at 11:15 PM. Reason : who knows!]
8/23/2011 11:14:52 PM
yeah, E497F was the "intro to Engineering" BS class that all engineers had to take. I can't think of a more worthless course I ever took. They ended up saying that they took the 497 number because all the other 100 numbers were taken, or something like that.

I didn't mind E115, I got an easy A and a basic intro to linuxI'll bet Marvin Austin could've learned a thing or two in that class though]

interesting thoughts in this article about the possible future (or lack of a future) for the ACC after all of these violiations:http://blogs.ajc.com/mark-bradley-blog/2011/08/22/can-the-flagging-acc-survive-in-a-football-driven-industry/This line in particular caught my attention:

With Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Kentucky banded together they can't get the 9 necessary votes to get FSU or Clemson in the conference. Yet, they continue to be the first names that pop up. It's a head scratcher to me.

Sorry, but what the fuck is African Studies anyway? And how can you major in that and then talk about the academic reputation of your university as if you actually had a real major? Maybe I'm being a massive racist but it seems pretty clear to me that "African Studies" is just some bullshit program for people who want to feel like they're doing something important by learning about the culture of their "heritage", and more than likely something that they've never even really experienced themselves anyway. Why not get a real major? Like one that will actually provide you with a job, or a meaningful purpose in life? Or are you going to go join the Peace Corps in Africa? That's about the only use I can see for "African Studies."Sorry.[Edited on August 24, 2011 at 10:43 AM. Reason : Yeah.]

Is your class easy? Have you taken any others in the major?
8/24/2011 11:39:20 AM
We've only met twice so far, it's not hard yet. Doesn't sounds too taxing either. IIRC, there are no tests (or maybe just not final, can't remember) but there are several projects we'll have to present to the class. It will certainly require some effort, but it shouldn't be too hard to get an A. It's a 200 level course (Austin's was 400 level) and, yes, it is my first course in the major. I'm just taking it to fill an interdisciplinary requirement.[Edited on August 24, 2011 at 12:03 PM. Reason : ]

^To answer your questions...here is the grade distribution (does not include my professor, he is new...or at least new to this course): http://ncsu.blinkness.com/class/ncsu-afs241 No, the class is not restricted access. There are 2 bball players in the course (Brown and Raymond) and at least 1 football that I can recognize (DJ Greene...there may be others but I don't recognize any more). And I wasn't trying to compare the course I'm in to the UNC 400 level Swahili course. Just responding to the poster, jsausely, who was questioning the validity of African Studies courses, in general.[Edited on August 24, 2011 at 7:30 PM. Reason : ]

Sorry if it sounded kind of shitty. To me it just sounded like a reinforcement of the Insidecarolina line that "all schools have easy courses so this isn't a big deal". This has potential to be a HUGE deal if it is indeed confirmed that this class has restricted access (a course designed to give athletes good grades) and could turn this into an investigation into the entire athletic department not just football.
8/24/2011 7:50:54 PM
^Oh I absolutely agree with you...there's nothing wrong with a professor grading in a manner that results in few D's and F's. However, there is absolutely something wrong with a professor using a different grading system for athletes, or only offering a course to athletes, or restricting access to certain "easy" classes to allow athletes in them. There does seem to be something fishy about a student-athlete taking a 400 level class prior to taking his required remedial English course. I'm not getting my hopes up for the media digging much more up here, but I will definitely be interested in what they find....if they find some damning evidence, this could be huge.
8/24/2011 8:01:17 PM
i can only imagine the feeding frenzy that would have ensued at WRAL and the N&O if anything remotely similar were found at NCSU. I commend them for at least reporting on it, but I wish they would actually dig and start demanding records to either prove this shit or clear the air
8/25/2011 1:11:42 AM
have you not been following this at all?
8/25/2011 1:21:18 AM
yes. they've written an editorial bemoaning it, but, AFAIK, they haven't demanded any actual investigations or requested school records to see who is getting into the class. They've also done a shitty job overall with their bully pulpit in berating UNC over not releasing bona fide public records.
