aperture is going to depend on the subject of your shot and how much depth of field you need. you're probably fine with shooting wide open if everything in your photo is at infinity

Bummed about my lens. Real bummed. I just sold my other lens and was saving up to buy one early next year. Not enough disposable income to buy what I want, so I'm glassless for a while.Damn./blog

i have a question for you digital photography gurus: is it true that ISO scales with pixel density?for example, you have these two cameras:P&S with 1/2.33" sensor (28mm2) at 15MP = density around 54MP/cm2DSLR with APS-C sensor (370mm2) at 16MP = density around 4.3MP/cm2at these values, the P&S has roughly 12x the pixel density of the DSLR...does this mean that ISO100 on the P&S is equivalent to ISO1200 on the DSLR?

^^You were in South Florida? Why didn't you invite meeee I'm a few minutes away and perpetually not doing anything
12/19/2011 1:10:03 AM
I've always wanted to get into photography and I'm looking to drop up to $1,200 on a good SLR and lens, does anyone have any suggestions as to what and where to buy?
12/19/2011 4:54:21 PM
^^I didn't realize you'd want to go around getting dirty, catching snakes and lizards and shit. Most of south Florida is so trashy, there's no use in photographing anything other than the specimens themselves.Anyway, on the road back home now.
12/19/2011 5:08:59 PM
Honestly, I gotta say, you shit has vastly improved in capturing snakes. I like the 1st one in the post above. Have you thought about adding a 2nd light source for some kicker or rim? Or atleast use a reflector for a bit catching the bounce/fallout? I think that would really improve your pictures since you have everything else picture perfect.
12/19/2011 6:20:47 PM
Thanks, man. Considering practically everything I photograph (except my captive geckos) are wild animals that are photographed while out and about, I typically just have to make the best with what I've got and within the financial constraints of a grad student. I had a homemade ring flash/twin flash that I literally gave away last night to someone who took me out and commented a lot on how he liked the lighting. It's not a twin-lite, but for $30, I get pretty damn close to the effect of a MTL. Still, there are times that I like to play with lighting to get some nice shadow to show the texture of the scalation. Sometimes, it's just dealing with the fact that ideal lighting equipment is cumbersome to manage while hiking around for hours on end and usually solo (though not for this trip). If I get lucky and score a wireless flash trigger and a second flash, I'd be able to work on lighting differently. But for now, I'll be re-making my homemade ring flash/macro twin lite over the holidays.
12/19/2011 6:50:26 PM
just get a cheap set of wireless poppers off of ebay and get a cheap vivitar as ur 2nd flash. I kinda miss my 580 II and 430 setup since it was so mobile, although the ST-E2 never worked for it.

Thanks, man. The comments mean a lot to me, coming from some pros. If I knew of some wildlife photography contests, I'd be happy to enter. Let me know if you notice any. I photograph purely for fun, though I have had decent success in the very few contests I've entered. Never even thought of submitting shots for a magazine. And I'll let you know next time. This is an annual super-dirty, super-cheap trip I make with a couple of friends every December. So unfortunately, you'll have to wait another year. And we're all amateur wildlife photographers with pretty wimpy gear for the most part (at least compared to the pros). When something cool is found, a short line (or circle) forms to get shots. We had some out-of-town acquaintances with superior gear meet up with us last year who were quick to hog the best angles. It was pretty frustrating. But if you fly solo, we could probably manage. Typically more than 5 minutes photographing a subject before moving on to find the next is the pace we maintain, and there is tons of trail walking involved, though there is a fair amount of looking for animals on roads as well. But there's a bounty in south Florida that is free to anyone willing to go for it. You live in Miami, no?Oh...and all was shot with my T2i, nearly everything was shot with my 50mm macro, and all of the best-lit shots were taken using my homemade twin light powered off a single 430ex II and off-shoe cord.Almost forgot this shot I got of an orange phase Regal Jumping Spider. Forgot to take pics of the black phase one I found.[Edited on December 20, 2011 at 10:10 AM. Reason : .]

12/20/2011 6:33:44 PM
I'm going to a trade show in Vegas...looking to take some pictures, and video using my T2i.Any recommendations of lens? I have a 28-135mm as my "working glass"http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006I53S/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details
12/20/2011 6:40:40 PM
^I've used that same setup and it works out well if it's just a personal thing. If you're looking to put something professional together...well, I'll leave that to the professionals. I shot a friend's alligator show when I was in FL, and the video turned out nice, even at the lowest quality available with that body. It's just a pain in the ass that once you're rolling video on these DSLRs, you have to manually focus if you want to focus at all. I'm assuming if the video sticks with DSLRs, there will eventually be new lenses that will come out with the machinery to auto-zoom for smoother operation. But who knows when that will happen?I should ask what type of trade show are you going to? What sort of shots are you anticipating? Stick with an IS lens whatever the case if you're shooting handheld. I find the 28-135 suits most run-of-the-mill applications. I'm still interested in Tamron's 18-270mm lens, though, for an even greater range. However, I wonder if there consequences that come with a lens with such a great range.[Edited on December 20, 2011 at 6:56 PM. Reason : n]

umop - from me....great pictures man. i love pretty much all of your soflo shots. great job. how close were you to that coral snake. soon as i saw it i though ... red/black friend of jack - red/yellow deadly fellow. agree on submitting your photos ... i really need to pick my camera back up.
12/21/2011 4:06:41 PM
Thanks again. What people don't tend to realize is that coral snakes aren't typically very bitey snakes. They don't strike out, bites happen while being handled, if they try to bite at all. Every now and then I've heard of people coming across vicious individuals, but the temper only emerges when being handled. They shot of the coral on the road was from more than an adequate distance. Even though I found it, my friends were first to surround and huddle over it, so I only got that one shot while it was well-posed. Subsequent poses were all shit. I was probably around 3-4 ft from the snake in that shot (it's cropped). All said, that snake was manipulated by gently picking it up from its tail and anchoring the anterior portion with a stick.

So near the end of my trip, I was reviewing photos from the camera when I noticed my glass screen protector cracked. The origin of the crack is right at the bottom edge and it creates a V-shape to each edge. I'm glad I had the protector on there, but I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to remove and replace the glass protector safely.

1/23/2012 3:43:22 PM
damn, 2k for a 70-200 2.8 IS is a sale price? I paid 1520 for mine new years ago, although I really need to turn it over to canon to fix the loose barrel; reason why my IQ is super soft at 2.8 so I have to stop down to 4 or 5.6 to get reasonable sharpness.really surprised that my 5d mkii is still a top dog performer; canon phased in like 10 new bodies since mine came out.
