It's about time. I can finally join the world of texting. I refuse to pay for that stupid shit. Seems to work great though. The badges are sometimes a pain in the ass to make go away after you get a text, but enough monkeying around seems to get it eventually.

If you already have google voice forwarding texts to your phone and you install this you'll be getting both notifications from the app and forwarded gvoice texts.

Go to:

https://www.google.com/voice#phones

Click on "edit" by your cell phone and un check the "Receive text messages on this phone."

Took me a sec to find that.

http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2010/11/embedded-sim-could-cause-carrier-conflict-for-apple.ars

Pretty much apple is putting in a programmable sim chip. Means instant unlocking and carrier changes. Carriers are flipping out.

Personally I hope they do it. Will open the market, apple will get more sales. Carriers are threatening to cut subsidies but Id think apple will just have to take the hit and cut prices.

"The programmable SIM could eventually lead to mobile carriers' worst nightmare—simply serving as dumb pipes for voice and data. (That doesn't sound too bad for consumers.)"

So I'm still hoping that the next update of the Google Voice app will add this feature, but it looks like a third party app called Talkatone allows you to send and receive free VOIP calls through your Google Voice/GChat account. I haven't tested it out too much, but it looks like it works well enough on the couple of test calls I made.

Might be in the other apple topics but in case you don't have one of the 6 airprint capable printers, which is most of us, and you have a mac in the house here is a way to airprint to your hearts content.

I'm searching for a map app that works without having a signal.

I was hunting in Bertie Co. (pretty much no signal there hardly) was trying to map out my hunting adventure but couldn't because the google map wouldn't load.

^For hiking I use Accuterra Unlimited. You can download free topo maps for whatever sections you want. It's like $2.99 I think. Totally worth it. Great app.

edit to say, maybe that's not the one I was thinking about. There used to be one that let you download publicly available map info for free for any area you want. Looks like that program makes you buy the maps for the country you're trying to get info for.

Completely worth $1.99. All the topo maps are free and include almost anything you'll need.

Has anyone on here developed an app for the iphone??

I've got a friend who has developed an app and is looking for financial investing and sent me a pretty impressive proposal. I'm considering investing and was just wondering if anyone here has developed something and how did that go for them?

I was totally out of service this morning at work near blue ridge and hillsborough. There was obviously network or tower problems in that area as normally I have great coverage and I couldnt even get a text out. It came back around 11:15 and I got text bombed soon after. Lets hope it was an isolated incident.

I've never had any major complaints about AT&T either, the only places I don't have coverage are in the middle of nowhere. The rest of my family has Verizon and there are places they have coverage that I don't, but there are places that I have coverage that they don't as well.

yeah. it's weird too bc you can't go to an at&t store here in RM & sign up/get an iphone. you have to go to wilson. i'm not sure why, but they refuse to deal with iphones here.

AT&T is great on I-40 and in metropolitan areas, but try and use that shit on the beach and your iPhone will just fart in your face.

Depends on what beach. We have a place down at Kure Beach and it gets the most beautiful 5 bar 3G signal I've ever seen in my life. Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach has always been fine for me too.

Okay guys. I am seriously here for some serious questions. I want to get the I phone 4 for Christmas this year. I have had a blackberry curve now for 2 years since 2008. I used to love the thing but now I HATE it. So slow for the internet but I like how I can save all my text etc. It seems as the more messages I get the slower the phone gets and it freezes a LOT

So could you tell me some things. What is the highest possible deposit one would have to make to ATandT since I would be switching. Do you have to have like the best credit ever? What if you have been with your cell phone provided for 6 years? Also....right now I pay 81.81 a month. I get 900 anytime minutes, unlimited nights and weekends starting at 7, unlimited text, unlimited data, insurance, etc. What could I expect to pay with ATT. My work gets us 18 percent off so that isn't too bad. Please get into everything you can give me for advice!!!!!!! thanks.

Got a blackberry on Verizon and a Sprint 4G hotspot from work in addition to my iPhone. So now I'm rocking 3 networks all the time.

^^^^We have a house on the beach in SC near Georgetown and I get full 3G service there, I don't take my phone out to the beach anymore though because a few grains of sand got in the dock connector of my original iphone and it was never the same again. It would constantly pop up the "this accessory is not designed to work with the iphone" message even when nothing was connected to it.

Holy crap, there are a shitton of A+ games that just/are about to hit the app store.

Quote :
" * Telltale has released the first episode of its Tales of Monkey Island series on the iPad, continuing the storyline from the classic game.
* Gameloft's Uncharted-alike Shadow Guardian will be available this evening, as will NOVA 2, the sequel to last year's popular FPS. We saw a preview of both a little while back.
* Sega is bringing the old Altered Beast game to the App Store, and it's probably just as bad you as remember.
* Eidos has surprised us with a release of the Xbox Live and PSN title Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, arriving on the App Store for both iPhone and iPad tomorrow. Should be a good one -- reviews were excellent on the previous platforms.
* Aralon: Sword and Shadow HD is a really impressive fully 3D action RPG to play through, available for $6.99 on the App Store soon.
* Real Racing 2 is coming out this evening. I got to play an early build and I can tell you that it's fantastic, one of the best racing games on the App Store.
* Riven: The Sequel to Myst arrived on the store last night.
* Classic adventure title The 7th Guest is now out on iPhone for US $2.99 and iPad for $5.99.
* World of Goo is also due out on the iPad tonight, and this version is supposed to be one of the best.
* EA's Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is arriving on iOS in a streamlined version, but it's going to be on sale for just 99 cents, so that's nice.
* Duke Nukem 3D isn't a new game, but it (and the iPad special edition) has gone free recently.
* A few apps are updating for the holidays: Both educational astronomy app Star Walk and destructive worm simulator Super Mega Worm have special Santa-related updates out now.

^Just downloaded that...the demo that comes with it(reversing words) doesn't work nearly as well as that ad. I'm not throwing down 5 bucks per language until I see that work well.

Very impressive if it works though!

I've found it works much better when you keep the phone in portrait mode (held vertically) rather than landscape mode like in the video.

i bought Myst last night. it's a big file, taking a while to download, so i just left it plugged into the computer & went to bed. this morning it's still only on about 25%. i turn it off, doesn't fix it. i tried to pause it, it won't. i did the holddownthepower&homebutton thing, no luck. i don't know what else to do. how do i fix this?

If the hard reboot doesn't work you might have to do a complete restore using DFU mode. Which wipes everything. Hope you've made a backup recently. They specifically recommend not downloading large games like myst and riven directly to the iPhone, but downloading them to your pc using iTunes and then syncing it to the phone from there. iPhones and large downloads don't work too well together. Sucks for you that you found out the hard way.

^He is saying to go to the itunes store on your computer and download the game there and then sync it to your phone afterwards. It sounds like you downloaded it directly to your phone.
