24th seems reasonable given Yow's time frame

Really depends on the runs teams make in the tournament, but I think most of our candidates actually drew tough match-ups and making it past the first weekend would be surprising. I think once we can actually talk to candidates it won't take long to iron out a deal.

For people trashing on premium rivals/scout, one interesting thing Rivals/Wolfpacker has done is interview a CAA coach about Keatts and an A10 coach about Wade

As far as I know it's real. The reason TOB didn't apply is because he joined BC when they were not part of the ACC and thus did not have this written into his contract.
3/14/2017 5:37:38 PM
Pretty sure it's not.

Guy running Packpride is pushing for Keatts big time.
3/14/2017 8:06:49 PM
Yeah I just don't understand the love for Keats given our situation. Don't want another coach that doesn't prioritize defense even if a great recruiter and offensive mind. I'm not saying we want to go full UVA but we need a better balance.
3/14/2017 8:11:37 PM
Know he hasn't been on the radar, but definitely not New Orleans' coach. Down 1 with only a 4ish second difference between game and shot clock. Only had 2.6 seconds to go the length of the court. Didn't work.
3/14/2017 8:50:28 PM
The first four games are played in Dayton. Archie is the coach at Dayton. What could this mean for our coaching search???

yeah that PP article reads like they're hyping us up for what's already been decided. Wade may go to Clemson assuming their HC gets fired. That would make Dayton's grip on the A10 even stronger so Archie can get a little more money at Dayton while he waits for Matta to retire at tOSU. We end up with Keatts. My only concerns with him are the defensive stats and that while he did bring UNCW out of obscurity, it was also after major powers in that conference left. VCU, George Mason, Old Dominion, and Georgia State all left in 2012-2013. That being said - he had a killer record at Hargrave, he's got great recruiting ties in the region and has been very successful at UNCW even if it is a low/mid major now.

I really don't think Clemson is gonna fire Brownell.
3/14/2017 11:01:01 PM
Clemson is a premier bball coaching gig, ITT
3/14/2017 11:23:58 PM
what is your guys opinion of a "mid major" conference if the caa is a low major
3/15/2017 12:36:41 AM
Indiana job should be open as early as today. Gotta believe they will target Archie too.
3/15/2017 5:56:33 AM
Sounds like Clemson isn't gonna fire Brownell but also, it's funny to me how Archie is dismissed as a candidate for us because he could do so much better and just being the alma mater doesn't carry much weight. but in the same breath we worry about Wade going back to his powerhouse of an alma mater.
3/15/2017 7:11:01 AM
At the same time, I don't know that the CAA is full of giants and they only played like 1-2 p5 teams. Unless I'm missing something about why height would matter
3/15/2017 8:23:37 AM
i'll be supremely disappointed if Keatts is our first choice. That would appear to me that they played it safe and went for a sure hire instead of reaching out.
3/15/2017 8:26:44 AM
Keatts isnt a terrible hire but if we have made it to the point where that is the hire then this has been a failed coaching search and Keatts is probably the best option at that point.
3/15/2017 8:27:51 AM
3/15/2017 8:56:40 AM
I feel like the PP guy was REALLY pushing Wade HARD and he was "his guy", but it just sounds like the more he researched Keatts the more impressed he was. It says a lot when you have people you interview that just gush about a guy, I'm sure it's not super common. Also don't discount the recruiting side(Yow is big on this) and the fact that Wendell Murphy is a big fan of Keatts(this is substantial). ^I know it's easy to see "Hargrave" and laugh at that since it's a JUCO, but you have to look at the bigger picture. He went to Hargrave when they had never landed a premiere/blue-chip recruit and weren't a major program at the JUCO level. He built that program into a juggernaut through great recruiting and work. I think he won several JUCO titles and his winning percentage was something insane like 94% of his games. He then took over a shitty UNCW program coming off a shitty year and turned the program around fairly quickly. I'm a bit worried about Keatts on the defensive side, but from what I've read his guys actually play HARD on defense, they're just limited a bit physically. The hope would be that as long as his guys were busting their ass that would be an immense improvement over what we saw out of Gottfried. You give me a guy that can recruit as well(or better) than Gott, that can teach a fun/effective offensive system, and that can motivate his players to play hard the entire game...sign me up. He's Gott's recruiting but seems like a really good coach and hard working guy. I think his learning curve will be a bit steep moving to the ACC, but he does have a lot of upside. Also helps guys like Anthony Grundy and Cam Bennerman gave him sterling reviews. I do expect Keatts will be announced as our new HC next week, but honestly I think most have expected that since mid-year. Everyone was on board until they "advanced defensive analytics" info came out. Miller is going to keep winning at Dayton because it's easier to win there and he can pad his resume with more tournament visits while he wits for the perfect job to open up. Matta is only 49 but he's had chronic health issues including a bad back, some thought he'd retire this year. I doubt Matt is at tOSU for more than 2-3 more years.Wouldn't surprise me if we had options of Wade or Keatts and actually chose Keatts over Wade.

My bad on the Juco vs Post-Grad Hargrave situation. I just know that apparently Keatts had to recruit an entire roster each year and thus built a lot of in-roads with major HS and AAU programs.Still, ridiculous success at Hargrave, National Title as an assistant, and quickly rebuilt UNCW into a tournament team. He's going to get scooped up by a program in the next year or so, ceiling is too high not to.
3/15/2017 10:13:00 AM
I agree with LudaChris and I'll also add that a 94% win record at anywhere, being it a high school or whatever isn't something to snub your nose at. Whatever Hargrave is, it's a military school and he was able to keep kids happy there when, for many, it's a punishment or last chance type of place (not trying to put down people who went there / parents went there, etc. it's a fine school on its own merits). He even got a McDonald's All American there that presumably had academic/behavioral problems keeping him out of a 4-year school and got him to fall in line. I think a lot of us were calling for Keatts when Gottfried was struggling but when the search started we started looking to the stars, myself included. Part of me would feel a bit let down that we couldn't/didn't get somebody that's a virtual guarantee for success like Gregg, Drew, Archie, etc. but at the same time I don't think it's unreasonable that we may have the choice between Wade, maybe Holtmann, etc. and actually chose Keatts. You could make a case for any of those three. Maybe State just saw a good bargain in Keatts. In the end, if it's Keatts I'll be content. I won't be calling everyone I know saying can you believe it! but it won't be a head scratching wtf hire, either.
3/15/2017 10:14:25 AM
Yeah, when you coach a post-grad prep school team you do have to recruit a new team every year. And hargrave isn't some unknown little school that just popped up. It's got scores of alumni in the NFL and to a lesser extent the NBA.

i'm not trying to beat the drum for Keatts being the greatest coach ever. i just don't really get the folks saying that we should do better and getting him would be settling. yes, he's young and unproven. i totally understand that. but he's being talked about with the Mizzou and Illinois jobs. and will certainly be a candidate for Clemson if Clemson opens up. we're a superior job to Clemson and Mizzou, imo, so that may not totally be an apples to apples comparison. but he's being talked about as a big up and coming name from the mid major ranks. sure, Archie is more proven and we should try to get him. but Keatts should be a legit candidate for us and no just a last resort.
