^come on now David. you had the 4th best possible hand and he had the 5th best possible hand. i'm pretty sure if the roles were swithced it would have been a pretty similar outcome. well i guess he actually had the 8th best hand but still against the small blind i'm sure you would have stayed in..besides you should be ashamed your gay 8-2 outdrew A-8[Edited on February 20, 2005 at 11:09 AM. He should have reraised on the flop. I would have three bet and he would have folded.
2/20/2005 1:39:05 PM
I agree, I think the worst play is you voluntarily pitching another .25 in to see the flop. With only two other people in the pot it makes very little sense since you probably won't get paid off even if you do catch a great flop. Sure its just a quarter put you could catch something on the flop and still be beat thus further draining your chips. It ended up working out for you since you caught what basically is the best hand avaialable to you with 82s but I still don't like the preflop play.
2/20/2005 1:41:29 PM
It was 8-2 suited. I was getting 1-5 pot odds, plus I was going to bet the flop no matter what. I'll call with 27 off on the button just b/c I can outplay half those fools at the $25 tables...When I double up in tournaments it is on small/big blind half the time b/c I flop two pair and since those retards don't pay attention to position they push all in with top pair thinking there is no way I could have 8-2....[Edited on February 20, 2005 at 1:46 PM. Reason : ]
2/20/2005 1:44:15 PM
I'm sure you can. (no sarcasm intended) But still 1-5 pot odds in that situation aren't good. You don't have a 20% chance of winning that hand.
2/20/2005 1:46:58 PM
There was no way to know I was dominated, i.e. A8 vs 82, but if it was something like A7 vs 82 it is almost a coin flip...
2/20/2005 1:49:49 PM
no it isn't
2/20/2005 2:42:17 PM
A7 offsuit against 82 suited is 60/40A7 suited against 82 (different suited) is 63/37A7 suited against 82 (same suited) is 66/34so assuming first case, it is almost a coin flip

Statistically speaking, in online poker (or in any poker, but especially online) it behooves you to see as many flops as possible, for the very reason that David showed you: because people refuse to lay down top pair, A kicker. I swear to God, I have played with so many people online who either don't raise, or raise the blind from .50 to 1.00 who make this move. I was playing QJ from the big blind one time, no callers until the small blind, who then raised it from $.50 to $1.00. Now, QJ, KJ, KQ offsuit is normally not a hand I play, but it's not all that bad heads up, especially to a $.50 raise. Anyways, flop comes 8910, no flush draw, so I am looking good. He immediately comes out firing, this time with a bet of $15. I was like, wtf can this guy be playing with, so of course I called. Next card was a 2, no help, he bets $40. At this point I am thinking... overpair, maybe trips, I mean God knows what. Anyway, last card is a K, so I still have the nuts. He bets another $40, I go the rest of the way in for whatever was left, he calls. He was playing A10. Yes, he lost over $100 to me because he would not lay down top pair, top kicker. Moral of the story here, if people make it cheap to see flops, then see flops, because people just will not fold sometimes.

I just played in a tournament at chuckems, part of the world tavern poker series. Got 1st overall, out of 80 people. came back from last place in chips about halfway through to win it. final hand, got pocket jacks to beat pocket 9's.1st prize wasnt bad either i was pretty happy, my 1st tournament to play and 1st place.also, a quick question... if you get pocket 2's, and someone raised pre-flop, do you pay to see it?i was about middle of the run on chips, and a guy put in a pretty big raise. about 40 percent of my total chips. 8 people left. i folded em, and ended up would have hit it. wise for me to fold, or should i go for it?any statistical #'s on success with pocket 2's would be appreciated.[Edited on February 20, 2005 at 6:41 PM. 2/20/2005 6:15:11 PM
just as a general guideline, i'd suggest folding to a preflop raise.best you can hope for is that he has two overs, in which case it's a coinflip. if he has a pocket pair, you're a big underdog.obviously, there are cases where you may want to call. but it would depend on your opponent, and what position you are in at the table.
2/20/2005 8:26:27 PM
You should most likely fold. I would push if I was short stacked and was desperately looking for a 50/50 chance to double up.

^^ going to a $10/20 table heads up with the minimum amount allowed? that just sounds moronic to me.I wouldn't even say the other guys play was completely moronic. Maybe the call on the turn or river, but the guy could have easily had a solid draw. Or even had the flush on the flop and lost because of the running 4's. (in that case he's a bigger moron for just checking and calling).either way, i doubt i'd reraise the flop with bottom pair and 3 hearts on the board.

I cleaned up the car dealers game tonight, and finally got myself out of lifetime poker debt. I was dealt pocket Aces in the big blind, and 2 people were all-in for close to a hundred each by the time it got back to me. So I gladly called. First guy was bluffing with 2-7 suited, other guy had offsuit big slick. So I was about 77% to win before the flop. Flop was 7 8 4 one spade, which left me about the same odds of winning. Turn was a 2 making me a huge dog. But I got extremely lucky and an 8 came on the river giving me a better 2 pair. Pretty crazy night overall, almost no straights, and probably close to 20 boats. One poor guy had 14 open ended straight draws, and didn't hit a single one all night.

^I know you are a good player David. I have seen the tourneys you placed high in. How much is your online bankroll up to now, and what did you start at? I am currently around $300 and put in 25. All in the past week and a half.
2/24/2005 6:22:24 PM
I used to always keep $500 in there and whenever I got up to $1000 I would cash out half. I probably have about $2000 in there now since I put a grand in for their deposit bonus last month and never took it out. I started with $50 and lost it, then put in another $50 and lost it, then but in another $50 and turn that into about 10K. It is always nice to have a good size bankroll b/c I can easily open up 4 nl tables and bust ouf of all of them in a few minutes. The higher stakes you paly the bigger your bankroll needs to be. I think in limit its like 200-300X the bb.[Edited on February 24, 2005 at 11:46 PM. Reason : ]

OK advice guys, what do you do if you're at a table with a complete and utter idiot who keeps outdrawing everyone and has a huge stack? Play or switch tables? It's a $50 table and I busted out twice to him.Hand 1: He raises preflop, I call with 22. Flop is 952. I bet .$50 to bait him into a reraise, which he seems to always do. Sure enough, he goes all-in, which is great. Well, turn is a K, river a 9... he was raising preflop with 95 offsuit. Bam, bad beat one.Hand 2: He raises preflop, I call with 33. Flop is 456, he immediately goes all-in. Reluctantly, I call. Of course he was playing K7, and hits a K on the river. Not as bad, but still shitty.I have rebuilt my stack up to $241, obviously recouping my losses and much more, but not from this guy. He is still sitting there, with $313, bullying everyone around (as I type, I just won $25 from him), my stack now at $263. But I am seriously afraid to get in a hand with this guy. He has outdrawn KK with QQ (all-in preflop) and he goes all-in on about half of his bets, usually after the flop, so there is almost ALWAYS a way to get outdrawn. I was initially really really frustrated, actually I still am. I really feel there should be some justice in the world, even with poker... no especially with poker. I know I am not the greatest poker player of all time, but I do have a really good grasp of the mathematical side of things. People will get outdrawn, but to have it happen time and time again by the same guy is unbelievably upsetting and frustrating. And then, when he starts talking shit, after he just outdrew a set, or outdrew KK..... I dunno. I figure you guys are not nearly as prone to letting emotions get in the way as myself, but I don't see how you do it.
