since no one reads the last post....All shot last night w/ D700 24-120. All pier ones are 1 minute exposures, Wright Memorial one is 135s. f8 or f11, most 200 ISO and a few 400 ISO.

stowaway those are awesome... any post processing? and can I get full res shots of the memorial and the first pier shot? [Edited on May 17, 2011 at 9:40 PM. Reason : .]

A little bit of work in Adobe Camera Raw, outside of that it was basic contrast and minor saturation changes.

Nice stuff stowaway!

Nope, no ND filter. Only additional equipment I had was a remote timer so I didn't have to hold the shutter for the whole exposure and risk camera shake.

5/18/2011 9:05:34 AM
is that the avalon pier?
5/18/2011 3:28:24 PM
yeah, Avalon. Kinda wanted to run down to the new Jeanettes pier but didn't have time since the storms were rolling north just off the coast.
5/18/2011 3:30:54 PM
Do you have any larger versions?
5/18/2011 3:41:29 PM
most are upward of 4000px wide.

^^ nice, I'm really looking forward to going full frame when I get done with grad school and can afford the gear. Is there any way you could do a layer with the pier at lower exposure and the lightening behind it, so the pier doesn't look so overexposed?Prospero - there is typically a pretty good crowd for the alumni events out here in Denver, maybe 15-20 people for the UNC games.A friend was house/dogsitting and I came by to get some shots of the dogs. This pup was a good poser, and I thought the color/texture of the ottoman really add to the shot. This was a d200, 85 mm lens, f/1.8, ISO 320, 1/160s with +1/3 exposure bias
5/20/2011 4:27:17 PM
i would've expected a lot shallower DOF at 1.8 than that but still comes out pretty nice, probably would've bumped Ev up another 1/3

here's another lil vid i shot on the 7D: http://www.vimeo.com/23868330. we had some audio issues.nothing spectacular, just some interviewsand in case anyone interested in dSLR video missed it, the short film i posted on the last page that i shot also on the 7D: http://www.vimeo.com/23446303Those lightning photos are great. I wonder if you could take a shorter exposure and combine some to get more detail in the flag.[Edited on May 21, 2011 at 4:49 PM. Reason : .]

So I dropped my D60 and broke my 18-55 kit lens. I wanted to see if anyone on here has upgraded and wants to sell that lens or possible an 18-105. It has to have VR.Any recommendations on a different lens that might be a slight upgrade would be great also. I'm not looking to spend more than a few hundred and definitely don't want to go over $500 right now.

Were you able to successfully jam with your DSLR around your neck?
5/26/2011 2:20:53 PM
Actually yes, I have a 450D and the 50mm lens is only 2-inch lens, I had it over-shoulder, not around neck. Without huge battery packs and flashes and not being a full-frame camera, it's a fairly small body DSLR. I'm a complete amateur, I thought they were good shots, that's all. No professional equipment here.[Edited on May 26, 2011 at 7:17 PM. Reason : ,]

^ no way you got the 18-200 VR lens for $300, it's about 700 on amazon right now. I've heard it's a great lens though. If you did get it for 300, I feel sorry for the fool you robbed.I'm the opposite - I carry a ton of lenses. I would say if your 18-55 is broken, grab that 50mm prime. It's the lens I shoot with the most, and it will take amazing pics. I got an old 24-120 mm non-VR nikon lens on CL, and it's probably the most utilitarian piece of glass I have. I have heard that the VR model sucks ass (from Ken Rockwell).

We'd like to get one because the camera we've had that's been OK for a bit now just gives us blurry pictures of our little guy as he moves around too fast. Any suggestions for an affordable model (something to learn on as well)? I'm not really sure where to start looking.
5/29/2011 12:37:45 PM
that's the fault of the operator, not of the "fast moving little guy". If you don't know proper camera controls, it doesn't matter if you are using a point and shoot or a high end dlsr, you will still get blurry pics. You would probably kick yourself after spending $1000 on a DSLR setup and get the same results. Most P&S shoot be able to do 1/2000th of a second shutter speed, even though most of them are electronic shutters, so you shouldn't have any issues with stopping the action... as long as there's enough light. P&S tend to have fairly slow lens, around the f/4-6.3 range on the telephoto side, but as long as you bump up the ISO, that negates it.

my DIY string monopod has been invaluable...especially for less than $5...doesn't help for lifting the camera above the crowd and using a remote shutter, but it's great for stabilizationhttp://www.instructables.com/id/String-Tripod/

So I just finished up my first year of med school and my goal over the summer is to learn how to take some cool photos. I was wondering if you guys have any good sources of information for beginners. I pretty much know what all the settings do but have no idea how to combine them to get a good photo. What setting do you guys use for most HDR photos? Do you set the aeb all the way to -2/+2 or would a little lower give better results?
5/30/2011 9:58:15 AM
You just stepped knee-deep in a minefield of shit with that one.[Edited on May 30, 2011 at 7:10 PM. Reason : .]

haha well well if that question wont do I have another. I have a 55-250mm lens and the DOF is really small. Does changing aperture size effect that or am do I need to just get better at focusing(my dog is quick so I kept getting the grass in front or behind her)?

From our beach trip last week. I suppose technically my gf took this one of me. I set the camera up and focused, but she hit the shutter to humor me. I think it was a 5 or 7 second exposure.Unfortunately I didn't really shoot much when I was down there.[Edited on June 3, 2011 at 12:17 PM. Reason : .]

I've been needing to vent this somewhere...An in-law of mine is a photographer in a small town and does a lot of children / model type photography. She is great with Photoshop and has lots of nifty equipment but it irritates me to no end that at least 80% of her photos are taken at about a 30 degree angle to the left. Nothing is ever squared up, it's like she is incapable of taking a photo of someone with the horizon level. What's the deal with people doing this? I went through a very short phase when I had my first digital camera of doing things like this but soon realized that it's more of a distraction in most photos and adds nothing to the composition. Maybe to the undiscerning eye it makes things look more "artsy", I'm not sure, but I know I can't be the only one that this irritates.

is this thread inclusive of micro 4/3? if so, what are everyones thoughts? i pretty much want a "prosumer" camera that will allow me to take some great shots and will allow for manual adjustment and lens changes but i also don't want a giant d SLR all the time. wish i could have a good point and shoot and a dslr but i just can't at this time and i'm hoping to split the difference with the micro 4/3.
6/6/2011 3:54:58 PM
Ronny: how wide was that lens?^^ that annoys me as well. it can enhance some photos but for the most part its distracting[Edited on June 6, 2011 at 5:01 PM. Reason : -]
