^^ it probably won't appeal to hardcore gamers.

I mean it's fun but no galcon or doodle jump. I wouldn't call myself a hardcore gamer. I'll give it another shot.

the battery life on this phone is awful. took mine in because i thought there was something wrong with it, but apparently not
8/26/2010 12:16:45 PM
I went 3-4 days between charges on my 1st gen iphone. Note that I didn't have a data plan either. So I only used apps and data when I was connected to wifi. With my iphone 4, if i'm idle, the phone immediately gets pulled out, and i'm fucking around with it. I have to charge it almost every night. it's just a function of a device that compels you to use it constantly, and the battery's just gonna drain under those conditions. i've also noticed that disabling 3g helps a lot.
8/26/2010 12:54:46 PM
^^It still has the best smart phone battery on the market as of a little bit ago. Half my friends with android phones have it a lot worse. I typically charge it every day. If you really don't have access to a plug more than once a day then get a backup battery.
8/26/2010 1:04:50 PM
you make a good point and that's almost exactly what i'm experiencing. just was surprised after going from the 1st generation where i could go for a few days without charging, like you said. it drains really quickly if i'm playing a game. like goes down 10% in 20 minutes. ^i'm usually not far away from a plug so it hasn't really been a problem, i just find myself having to charge it when i get home from work so it doesn't die when i go out[Edited on August 26, 2010 at 1:07 PM. Reason : .]
8/26/2010 1:05:39 PM
Yeah. Can you charge it at work? If you're using it at work it's better to just keep it plugged in while using it. You use less charge cycles that way.
8/26/2010 1:18:58 PM
i jailbroke my phone the other day and downloaded mywi & a nes emulator. what else is cool that i should get?
8/26/2010 3:25:38 PM
woops finally synced google contacts with my iphone. now facebook is syncing photos with contacts, then syncing them back to google. taking FOREVER.
8/26/2010 7:38:12 PM
My iPhone4 gets roughly 3x the battery life that my 3GS got with similar usage...
8/26/2010 8:25:38 PM
If that's true, then there was something wrong with your 3GS.
8/26/2010 8:50:29 PM
I'm easily getting twice the battery life.
8/26/2010 10:29:34 PM
yeah i wouldn't say twice the battery life but it's a pretty noticeable improvement over the 3gs.
8/26/2010 10:45:19 PM
I havent really noticed a longer battery life at all over my 3g... still have to charge it every night
8/27/2010 1:44:00 AM
Well, I guess I'm just different. I've had multiple iPhone 3GS' and iPhone4s (thanks the the lightning storm last Wednesday), and the difference between previous iPhones and the 4 is most definitely more than 2x for me. I generally use it for over an hour of GPS logging (mountain biking) often while streaming radio, on top of regular GPS usage, text/web, etc. and the like, and still only charge it every other day, occasionally on every third day if my other usage is light. I've never gotten more than about 1.5days out of similar usage with a previous phone. Granted pre iPhone 3GS, I couldn't log a work out while listening to NPR, so I suppose 3g and original iPhone can't be directly compared.
8/27/2010 2:28:50 PM
yeah i use runmeter to track my runs while streaming pandora. An hour run usually doesn't drain it more than 10%.
8/27/2010 2:40:03 PM
in other news the Netflix app is pretty sweet
8/27/2010 3:48:04 PM
^second that
8/27/2010 7:20:27 PM
so is there a way to actually close apps aside from double clicking on home, making the icons at the bottom jiggle, then hitting "-" ?no wonder my battery life sucked, I had 28 apps down in the running and recent bar thingy
8/28/2010 2:13:55 AM
8/28/2010 2:44:52 AM
Well, I said "running and recent"So, things like pandora, same question
8/28/2010 1:35:35 PM
I don't know about that. I've been watching the processes and almost every app now has multitasking. So at the end of the day my ram has gone from 300+ down to around 60-70. The only way to get that back up is to close all the apps. Even if they're not all doing anything they're still saving their state in the ram. Does that take up any battery?
8/28/2010 6:31:47 PM
no.[Edited on August 28, 2010 at 6:40 PM. Reason : free memory is wasted memory.]
8/28/2010 6:39:33 PM
^^^^ You say that, but I have noticed a serious performance difference after shutting down the majority of the app icons that were running. And most of those would have no reason to actually run anything in the background.Of course, it could have been a different problem. That's just my experience.

Resupported4 got released today. It's a jailbreak app that allows you to use non-Apple approved video cables with your iPhone and iPad. I had a $4 cable that I bought off DX a couple of years ago that has never worked right since I got it (thanks to Apple deciding that they need to make a $35+ profit on every cable that gets sold) but now it works great. No more error message about how this cable isn't supported. It even gets rid of the stupid "airplane mode" message I get with my newer, Apple approved cable. My mom had been looking for a cheap way to get Netflix onto the TV in her bedroom, and now with the Netflix app + Resupported4 + Display out + a $4 cable, we got it working for less than $10.]

8/31/2010 10:51:14 PM
Shouldn't be too hard to find a u-Stream re-broadcast. But yeah, that is a dick move. You can watch a live feed of our great new products being unveiled, but only if you've already bought one to watch it on.
8/31/2010 10:54:22 PM
So it looks like the code that allows you to jailbreak the PS3 was released in open source form tonight. And I guess it doesn't need too much in the way of hardware to run the code. So according to the iPhone people on twitter, they are currently porting the code to the iPhone and, get this, the TI-84.

Hmmm, is it me or did they do away with the iPod Classic? They only showed refreshes for the Shuffle, Nano, and Touch. Which all look nice, fwiw. And why did they just change the logo of iTunes but not the name? Absurd.[Edited on September 1, 2010 at 1:41 PM. Reason : .]
9/1/2010 1:39:34 PM
Yeah think so. That can't be right though. You have to pay $399 for 64 gig? They have to keep the 160gig option for $249 for people who just want music.
9/1/2010 1:41:19 PM
9/1/2010 1:42:50 PM
Ping? Seriously? Wow. How much more bloated and over-featured can iTunes become?^I think it's absurd because iTunes does SO much more than "tunes" ... they even changed AirTunes to AirPlay because, as they said, it does more than just stream music. I just think that if they took the time to change the logo from an outdated CD, they should just change the name now too.[Edited on September 1, 2010 at 1:44 PM. Reason : .]
9/1/2010 1:43:35 PM
oic. yeah, i could see a name change too then. not sure i'd say it's absurd not to, but i see what you're saying

$99 appletvSOLD
9/1/2010 2:09:12 PM
Yep, that's pretty outstanding. They did something right.
9/1/2010 2:11:53 PM
woulda been nice to get appstore functionality on the appletv, but -shrug- i don't download apps anyways
9/1/2010 2:20:53 PM
Does it actually output 1080p? The old one doesn't, and while Engadget said in an article a while ago that it would, they then posted an article that said it wouldn't.
9/1/2010 2:22:29 PM
9/1/2010 2:26:01 PM
So they basically made a Roku HD that's (now) $30 more and uses iTunes instead of Amazon?Great job, Apple![Edited on September 1, 2010 at 2:34 PM. Reason : Oh wait, it's got Wireless-N ]
9/1/2010 2:32:20 PM
Yes, at that price point, I'll have to grab one also. I have an aversion to too many devices and cables, so this is huge for me.The big news out of today's event as a consumer for me was the iOS4.2 update, allowing streaming stuff to other devices. I've wanted that for years, and will finally have it. As a stock holder, the Apple TV looks like a big winner, as does iTunes 10. I'm sure they'll sell many of the new iPods, but I think sacking the classic and going to multi touch for the nano is a mistake as well. All in all, I think they will sell quite a few more songs/devices.
9/1/2010 2:35:25 PM
I have never understood how they can market the amount of music storage in units of time. It's totally dependant upon bitrate.
9/1/2010 2:37:15 PM
Because they want you to just get your music off iTunes which has a fixed bitrate.
9/1/2010 2:42:29 PM
Unless you're talking about something you've read on a website, the only mention of time I heard today was talking about battery life.
