how hard is the upper/barrel assembly process ?
12/18/2012 8:51:30 AM
buy some tools and watch a youtube video
12/18/2012 8:52:16 AM
With the right tools it is pretty simple
12/18/2012 9:19:54 AM
An action block, a barrel wrench, and a punch (for a stripped upper receiver) is all that is needed. You might also need a hex key or punch for the gas block.A barrel vise can be nice if you need to crank on a flash hider/compensator/brake to get it to clock properly. An upper takes 15 minutes at the most to assemble.
12/18/2012 9:52:48 AM
do i need to headspace it? i bought my first upper complete and already headspaced, can't find a good answer. upper receiver, barrel, and BCG are all likely to be different manufacturers.
12/18/2012 10:24:45 AM
No need. The barrel will already have the barrel extension on it that goes into the upper receiver. The head spacing will already be done with that.If you were target shooting for the .25 hole, then it may be worth having in redone and matched, but otherwise you will be fine. Some people are also anal-retentive and will check the head space, and send the barrel back if it is above their 'tolerance' level.

another question for you:i put a Magpul CTR buttstock on my other AR because i liked being able to shorten it and throw it in the truck or whatever, but still have the solid feel of a fixed stock with the CTR's friction lock.my beard hairs get caught in the gap between the buffer tube and the CTR. it pulls them right out of my face and hurts like a motherfucker.is there another option for a solid, yet collapsible stock? for reference, the regular M4 collapsible is too floppy imo. i've thought about just saying fuck it and getting an A2 buttstock or an ACE skeleton.also, would anyone like to buy a Magpul CTR?
12/18/2012 12:20:19 PM
I love the CTR, and have had it on 3 rifles.I also really like the UBR. It is heavy though (comparatively). It is a solid, collapsible stock.I run a magpul MOE A2 style stock on one of my rifles, and it is nice.Is the CTR mil spec or commercial?
12/18/2012 12:39:18 PM
mil spec[Edited on December 18, 2012 at 12:46 PM. Reason : love the stock. if it weren't for the beard thing i'd def keep it][Edited on December 18, 2012 at 12:47 PM. Reason : it's black]i actually wrapped it with that gauze-ish camo tape that only sticks to itself to prevent the beard pulling. i'd get done shooting and there would be several beard hairs just stuck in that gap. damn it hurt.[Edited on December 18, 2012 at 12:48 PM. get rid of the beard? I used to have a 1" thick beard and never had a problem? Can you add one of the 1" butt pads and then shorten the stock to get the gap away from your face some?[Edited on December 18, 2012 at 12:57 PM. Reason : .]
12/18/2012 12:56:53 PM
not shaving over thisdon't think the 1" would make a difference. my beard is from about an inch below my eyes down to my jawline.i googled it one day b/c i thought i couldn't be alone in this and i did find at least 1 other guy with the same problem[Edited on December 18, 2012 at 1:12 PM. How much for the ctr. And what color is the stock and the beard hairs that are in it. Hehe.
12/18/2012 1:39:11 PM
how will you guys cope when assault weapons are banned
12/18/2012 2:12:27 PM
The same as when they were banned in 1994. It won't change anything except make fools like you feel good.
12/18/2012 2:15:43 PM
everyone in this thread should be evaluated for mental illness
12/18/2012 2:18:59 PM
12/18/2012 2:50:33 PM
i'd also trade it for other AR parts. i can add boot.
12/18/2012 3:48:07 PM
Does anyone have any recommendations on who does the best trade ins in the area? I'm guessing Gander Mtn would be a complete rip off, but what about Perry's?
12/18/2012 3:52:41 PM
So, with this latest push for gun control legislation, who thinks anything meaningfully intrusive will get passed?I'm hoping the House will block anything bad.On the other hand, I think some Republicans might be ready to cross the fence on this....but then again, I think that the GOP might not be very willing to deal on gun control after painting themselves into a corner and probably having to give in a lot on the "fiscal cliff" negotiations.
12/18/2012 3:55:13 PM
I don't think there will be any meaningful change. Look how fast the media/country gets over everything. 58 were shot in CO theater, and no one talks about that anymore. These were kids, so it will last longer, but all will return to post election hording soon enough.
12/18/2012 4:04:50 PM
They need to do it right. basically make someone have to do C&C permit like classes/background checks for "assult rilfles "This will allow the sports that use them to continue while preventing people deemed unstable or un-fit from owning one. This seems legit and like something i could comply with. my $.02
12/18/2012 4:05:51 PM
Finger printing for an AR seems an awful lot like gun registration to me.
12/18/2012 4:08:40 PM
^^I could probably go for that, and a couple of other things, though not banning any particular type of weapon.I think CCP training is inadequate from a weapons handling and markanship perspective, too (though we haven't really had any problems with CCP holders; I guess most learn that stuff on their own accord).[Edited on December 18, 2012 at 4:12 PM. Reason : Yeah prob not for fingerprinting...just a move toward that direction of greater oversight.]
12/18/2012 4:10:45 PM
I dunno, the timing is horrible as it happened almost immediately after the election. The politicians have plenty of political capital to burn, and there are plenty of them that have been wanting to push for another assault weapons ban (nevermind that it effectively, does nothing to satisfy their goals). If they get this fiscal cliff mess sorted out, they'll probably move straight into guns. But, I don't expect anything meaningful to actually happen. The NRA is far too powerful. They might push for the large magazine bans, and NICS checks for private sales. The bigger issue will be how the SCOTUS looks in four years. Our pro 2nd amendment justices are getting pretty old.[Edited on December 18, 2012 at 4:14 PM. Reason : .]

^ From what I've read from Feinstein's statements so far are that her new bill would ban the sale/transfer of high capacity clips [sic].
12/18/2012 4:25:02 PM
^regardless of date of manufacture?
12/18/2012 4:26:18 PM
There hasn't been too many details discussed about specifics. But she said they are looking to make the bill stronger than the last one. They'll try to tie up the shortfalls from the 94 ban.Edit: Found the quote I saw ""It will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation and the possession, not retroactively, but prospectively," and ban the sale of clips of more than ten bullets, Feinstein said. "The purpose of this bill is to get... weapons of war off the streets.""The person who posted it on another internet board I was reading conveniently left out the "not retroactively, but prospectively"[Edited on December 18, 2012 at 4:32 PM. 12/18/2012 4:29:36 PM
maybe they should try to tie up that whole not-having-any-effect-on-crime thing
12/18/2012 4:30:39 PM
12/18/2012 6:32:45 PM
would we still be able to purchase parts? parts to build our own?
12/18/2012 6:54:27 PM
I'd be surprised if they banned parts or making your own.
12/18/2012 6:56:48 PM
Hmm. Probably just a price hike on lowers and uppers I guess.
12/18/2012 7:05:13 PM
So they are aimng to make illegal the possession of high capacity magazines obtained after the bill passed, but ones ones before are fine? And I guess AR parts as well[Edited on December 18, 2012 at 7:08 PM. Reason : -Peter ]
12/18/2012 7:06:37 PM
under the '94 AWB, magazines that were manufactured before the ban were unaffected (other than the price increase). magazines manufactured after the ban were limited to 10 rds. this applied to all detachable magazines, even rimfire.AR parts were unaffected, iirc. Colt's model AR-15 was outright banned from sale to civilians, so they just made the Colt Match Target Rifle with a regular fixed stock that didn't have a threaded barrel or bayonet lug. they made some minor change to the receiver and it was good to go. google it. you'll laugh.from what i've read, the proposed legislation isn't much different. i don't think the text is available to the public yet.[Edited on December 18, 2012 at 7:38 PM. Reason : adsf][Edited on December 18, 2012 at 7:39 PM. Reason : not production, sale to civilians. sorry.]
12/18/2012 7:37:12 PM
^^Something like that. It's so fucking stupid. I've been debating this on a couple other forums but the biggest problem is that the anti gun crowd automatically labels anyone who regularly shoots guns some right wing nut job and won't listen to any input they have to say on passing gun laws despite the fact that we are the ones with the experience in this area. All they really want to do is ban assault rifles, despite not being able to define what an assault rifle is other than a scary looking gun.[Edited on December 18, 2012 at 7:38 PM. 12/18/2012 7:38:16 PM
How about a sports car ban that outlaws racing stripes?
12/18/2012 7:42:57 PM
there's also the whole "bullet button" approach. that's popular in california and other state-level ban states. also good for a laugh.the mag capacity is pretty much the only part that would really bother me. the scary feature stuff is a minor inconvenience at worst.
12/18/2012 7:49:14 PM
the "scary feature" stuff bothers me, though... see the "shoulder thing that goes up" situation for a good examplethese people are trying to pass legislation and they don't have the slightest clue what they're talking about
12/18/2012 7:52:04 PM
actually, they know exactly what they're doing. their constituents are the ones who don't know. they go fight for another AWB in washington, come back to their state and say "hey, look at me, i tried to ban the evil black rifles. vote for me again."they know they're called "magazines", but they say "clips" because that's what most non-gun folks know them as.[Edited on December 18, 2012 at 8:00 PM.
