Nah, its not the same in any of those situations. Of course every coach who has poor enough results will be on the "hot seat", but its nothing more than rumors, analysts guessing and fans whining. There certainly weren't any bonafied reports from "sources" that any of them were being fired weeks before they actually were. And there definitely weren't similar reports from "sources" that they had reached out to particular coaching candidates. At the end of the day, you can't control what sportswriters and bloggers and fans will guess at or suggest. But a competent administration can damn sure control what can be reported as fact. [Edited on February 16, 2017 at 2:15 PM. Reason : d]

Nailed it.
2/16/2017 2:20:24 PM
But he is coaching the rest of the season.... Why?Just let one of the assistants finish the thing out. Good grief.

It probably has something to do with his contract.

I mean I understand the idea that if you have to pay him anyway might as well get the work out of it.But if you have to pay him anyway then why does it matter? Just seems like you're setting yourself up for more problems keeping him around.
2/16/2017 2:24:24 PM
I like the guy. Sad it didn't work out. Time to upgrade.
2/16/2017 2:25:01 PM
So he isnt really fired...his contract is just terminated at the end of the season.
2/16/2017 2:25:25 PM
These types of things happen all of the time in the business world. He has probably signed a contract saying that they have to give him a certain amount of notice before breaking the contract and vice versa. Without an actual criminal scandal, there is probably nothing that they can legally do.^He already had an extension, right? I don't think that his contract ended this year.[Edited on February 16, 2017 at 2:28 PM. Reason : a]
2/16/2017 2:27:00 PM
It literally never happens in the sports world. Just another example of our athletic dept. doing some inexplicable shit. We have a minimum of 5 games left. WTF?At least an assistant would have the "audition for major job" reason to perform well and see what they can do.
2/16/2017 2:29:27 PM
I am pretty sure that that is the reason why they always wait until after the season is over to do it in the sports world. That way the noticed period is negated by the offseason. The only time that it is done immediately mid season is in the midst of a legal scandal.

2/16/2017 2:32:14 PM
Yeah at this point in the season I can't imagine there being such a huge financial implication. Coaching contracts are designed on either side to be able to break them[Edited on February 16, 2017 at 2:34 PM. Reason : obviously there is a buyout but 5 games probably doesn't make a huge diff]
2/16/2017 2:32:21 PM
yeah this is a really awkward situation for both parties. not sure why he or we would want that. I feel kind of bad. I never thought this was where we'd be at the end of this season. I thought last year was just bad luck with Henderson getting injured, Lacey leaving somewhat abruptly, and being young. This season has just been an utter catastrophe when we finally had a deep and loaded (average 4.3*) team.

2.3 mill aint that bad of a buy out.
2/16/2017 2:35:43 PM
Are you people high?!? Lol if State "waited" until the end of the season to speak to potential candidates and "missed" on targets you people would have crucified the school.
2/16/2017 2:41:07 PM
I don't think anyone is saying to wait until the end of the season. It's just wierd as fuck that he is gonna coach through the end. Have an assistant take the helm like every other school does during a mid-season firing.
2/16/2017 2:43:36 PM
It is true that most coaches get fire immediately after the season is over.
2/16/2017 2:44:26 PM
Maybe he can't contractually walk away. Has to be officially fired and Yow wont do it.

bye Mike Gottfried. You an BJ Onion can go eat pizza together now.

+1 cred for being fired
2/16/2017 2:54:37 PM
2/16/2017 2:56:53 PM
It's gonna be awkward to let him go after winning the ACC and NCAA tournaments
2/16/2017 2:58:36 PM
Thanks for for the first four years, thanks for helping CJL, Brown, Warren, Barber, Howell improve. Enjoyed the two Sweet Sixteen runs. Talent level clearly higher than your predecessor. Will enjoy TJW and DSJr in the NBA for years. Did what you were supposed to do: short term fix, win more in the beginning, and make us more relevant. Wish you had worked out. I will be a fan wherever you go.

yup. ultimately Gott was a short term fix and while it's hard to totally understand that at the time (and doesn't make the eventual firing any easier), i think most of us probably realized he was a short term solution.RIP Gottfried. we had some good memories
2/16/2017 3:41:47 PM
I was cool with his first four years. The last two have been utterly unwatchable, so I'm happy for a change. It's going to an ugly coaching search again though.
2/16/2017 3:48:21 PM
Totally lost it last two
2/16/2017 4:03:51 PM
That Scott Wood game winning 3 that one time was fun

^Yeah, wow so many memories of this era. Gott really had us relevant.LOL at this comment in a deadspin article aboutt he Gott firing:

Let's not forget that game winning shot that Trevor Lacey hit against GT. Remember Cat calling for the ball right before it went in?

So to sum up our non pie in the sky guys for the Coaching Search:1. Moton- UNCC2. Wade- VCU3. Holtzman- Butler4. Keatts- UNC wilmingtonPie in sky but not totally crazy:1.Archie2.Hoiberg
2/16/2017 7:46:40 PM
Here is a nice News&Observer article highlighting some of those candidates.I really do like Moton as well now that i've done my research.Archie is still at the top of my list though. The reactions of the NC State students is LOL. http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/luke-decock/article133215524.html
2/16/2017 7:49:44 PM
I dont get the Moton obsession. He's a good coach but MEAC to ACC is an enormous jump. His teams don't play an exciting brand of ball and he doesn't really excel at anything in particular. He's also a huge UNC stan
2/16/2017 7:58:25 PM
WTF happened? I was pretty sure Gottfried was our guy. Someone needs to write a book about this catastrophic season. Is it that he took a new care free lease on life after his health issues? It's hard to understand the dramatic effect that can have on a person if you are young. I wish him well for the rest of the season and life in general.
