Well, I have some opinions on those players that you'll blast me for.

- Davis is what he is. I don't see much room for improvement in his game. He is an energy guy. Nothing wrong with that and every team certainly needs one or two of those guys.

- Mays will see his minutes mostly disappear next year. He just doesn't do ANYTHING with the ball and he is fringe ACC caliber. I actually had a few connected people tell me that BEFORE we recruited him and posted it on here and get blasted. Oh well.

- Williams has shown he can be good at times but I'm afraid he is what he is at this point.

- Howell, yes... he can continue to get better but his game is based more off of power than skill. He reminds me of Jeff Adrien from UConn. Toughness personified but not a game that will be able to develop much aside from getting more minutes and more opportunities.

I agree on Davis - I think he's about as good as he can get. The energy is definitely welcomed for the rest of the team. He's a good defender and his athleticism is apparent. But as far as a threat shooting deep shots and dribble driving - please don't.

I think that Williams can improve. He's obviously going through a sophomore slump, and after starting at the beginning of the season, his being benched is certainly deserved. He has shown glimpses of good play at times. Usually he plays smart, but he has struggled. I think if he can get his confidence back, he can be a solid player for us. He showed this weekend that when he's confident and encouraged, he can knock down shots and play well. Coach also praised his leadership in the huddle and being verbal on the court.

I agree Mays minutes' will decrease significantly next season. Maybe he can relieve ZO on the wing, but that would be a significant drop off in talent for a sub. I certainly don't want him coming in for ball-handling duties. I really don't feel comfortable with him doing anything - ball handling, lane penetration, fast breaks, etc. He seems like a smart player - just not a top level ACC player. To his credit, he can get the hot shooting hand when he wants. I would feel comfortable with him hanging out on the perimeter for open 3s. He's one of, if not THE best free throw shooters on the team. Problem is, he doesn't draw enough fouls to use that to his advantage.

Mays should transfer.....no way he plays meaningful minutes with Harrow/Brown/Javi here. Our team is completely different when he is running the point.

Mays will certainly have a big challenge ahead of him next year with those guards in front of him, I hope he's able to work on his game and stay in the rotation

As of now, Mays will be Harrow's only back-up in 11-12.

As a senior he will be backing up probably the best PG in the ACC. How would you feel?

He could be a good player for UNCG maybe. Plus we need the scholly to get real ACC talent.

and saying that mays hasn't been playing well and citing his stats to prove it is not the same as saying "he should transfer". do you not see that?

and it is obvious you have not actual content to respond with or you would have. Go back to lurking. Mays could end up being a solid backup option. For as nervous as he makes everyone feel he doesn't end up turning over the ball like Javi (this is partially because he doesn't make any plays but for a bench player sometimes you just don't want them to cause problems). CJ Williams reminds me too much of Fells at this point which is very sad...

The fuck are you talking about? Fells would dominate CJW in almost any aspect of basketball. Fells was our 2nd best player as a sophomore.

And lol at Mays could be a good backup! At this point it's clear he doesn't have it.

I was speaking more along the lines of never really showing what they are capable of. Williams looks like an ACC caliber player but he certainly isn't showing it. Fells as a sophomore was our 4th-5th option he scored the lowest ppg of any starter on the team that featured a walkon as one of the first off the bench.
Mays is styled along the lines of Atsur. Not flashy but tends to avoid multiple turnovers in a row (remember when Atsur was a freshman/ sophomore he had Hodge to bail him out and take over the game).

I really feel like Mays has settled down and figured out how to sort of handle the ball in ACC play given his natural deficiencies which prevent him from being any good. The problem is that he can no longer shoot, at all. That ability will likely come back as an upperclassman and if he can still manage not to suck complete ass at breaking the press and only causes a shot clock violation 1 out of every 10 possessions instead of 1 out of every 3 he'd be a useful back up at both guard spots. As we've seen lately, we could certainly do worse...though obviously could do better as well

edit: ^^^the people who compare CJW to Fells infuriate me. Fells had talent but disappeared. CJ is inconsistent because he just isnt very good right now

Dude, you really just like to argue don't you? Sure, he could still be a soild back-up. He's only a sophomore, and as mentioned, he doesn't turn the ball over. If he's only playing 8-12 mins a game, that may be all we need from him. Hold onto the ball and giver the starter a blow.

(yes, that is what she said)

I think coach should just move him to SG next season while Javi is still here. He's a much better shooter than a ball handler. He can come in and relieve ZO or CJ off the bench.

as a senior, Engin averaged 11ppg and 4apg in his 14 conference games

he was never the go-to guy....hell, he was never even the 3rd or 4th option. yet, he finished his injury-shortened career with 1181 points and 365 assists

if Mays can even come remotely close to those numbers, then yes, i'll agree that they are styled along the same lines

Engin was one of the best defensive players we've had in years. He usually shut down whoever he guarded. When I think of him playing I have the image of him getting a kickball off an opponent's pass all the time

The only reason I compared Fells to Williams is that Fells never really got it and never became nearly the player he was capable of becoming. So far Williams is following that same trend. Atsur/Mays slow unathletic pg's who understand their deficiencies. If you remember Atsur as a great defender you smoked crack in any game where he was guarding a legit pg. They would absolutely blow by him because he was slow...

i'm bored, so I looked through all of the box scores in Engin's senior year

the ONLY point guards who abused him were Singletary and Lawson

there weren't many PGs in the nation, let alone the ACC, who could contain either of those two

i guess you never watched fells.

he could score 10 points and play lazy defense, turn the ball over 8 times, and just be otherwise worthless.

scoring isn't always the whole story.

just refuting the statement that "he never got it"

maybe I don't know what "it" is, but in my definition of "it," I'd say he got "it"...and I'd love to have somebody with his type of "it" on this year's team to complement Smith's "it"

i thought that was pretty clear.

fells could have played a lot better than he did on numerous occasions. we know this because he had some great games to complement his horrendous outings.

he was the poster boy for inconsistency.

i thought he was extremely consistent his senior year

40% from three, 86% from FT...and 17/26 games with double figures (21/26 with 8 or more)

same here, but i don't think he was as consistent as his senior year offensive statistics would suggest.

it's hard to quantify defensive consistency, so i guess that's just my opinion.

If you remember his senior year he missed a ton of games and when he did play other players were having to help on his man because he was playing on a bad hamstring. Box scores don't mean shit but if you actually watched games throughout Atsur's tenure you would remember his speed was a definite liability on the defensive end. Even if you went back and looked at old posts on TWW you would here people bitching about Atsur's speed and how guards would just blow past him. Don't get me wrong he was a great player for us (eventually) but he wasn't the elite player some of you make him out to be.
I never had as much problem with Fells on Defense. He played his ass off on the defensive end (he was as close to a shut down defender as we had). He was just completely inconsistent offensively and given his athleticism and size he could have been a great player for us. Williams has shown sparks of surprising ability but he is showing the same inconsistency.

i'd give-up any pg AND sg on the current team for the junior or senior atsur.

nothing against those guys, but the consistency and team leadership that atsur provided at the point is what this team has really been lacking.... since atsur left.

tke is right, what this team needs is another consistent scorer (as evidenced by the 57 game statistic. who cares if he turned shit over, we turn it over plenty now)

especially from deep. i never thought fells 3pt % was that great, but man having him on the perimeter would be helpful now.

we dont the turn ball over as much this year as we did last. we shoot much, much worse, however

both those things have more to do with costner than fells, though (well...fells would help the shooting aspect).

instead of having to resort to bringing the ball out and regrouping, i think fells would help us be able to convert some 3 on 1 fast breaks
