Well, I have some opinions on those players that you'll blast me for.- Davis is what he is. I don't see much room for improvement in his game. He is an energy guy. Nothing wrong with that and every team certainly needs one or two of those guys.- Mays will see his minutes mostly disappear next year. He just doesn't do ANYTHING with the ball and he is fringe ACC caliber. I actually had a few connected people tell me that BEFORE we recruited him and posted it on here and get blasted. Oh well.- Williams has shown he can be good at times but I'm afraid he is what he is at this point.- Howell, yes... he can continue to get better but his game is based more off of power than skill. He reminds me of Jeff Adrien from UConn. Toughness personified but not a game that will be able to develop much aside from getting more minutes and more opportunities.[Edited on February 22, 2010 at 10:26 AM. Reason : x]

I agree on Davis - I think he's about as good as he can get. The energy is definitely welcomed for the rest of the team. He's a good defender and his athleticism is apparent. But as far as a threat shooting deep shots and dribble driving - please don't.I think that Williams can improve. He's obviously going through a sophomore slump, and after starting at the beginning of the season, his being benched is certainly deserved. He has shown glimpses of good play at times. Usually he plays smart, but he has struggled. I think if he can get his confidence back, he can be a solid player for us. He showed this weekend that when he's confident and encouraged, he can knock down shots and play well. Coach also praised his leadership in the huddle and being verbal on the court. I agree Mays minutes' will decrease significantly next season. Maybe he can relieve ZO on the wing, but that would be a significant drop off in talent for a sub. I certainly don't want him coming in for ball-handling duties. I really don't feel comfortable with him doing anything - ball handling, lane penetration, fast breaks, etc. He seems like a smart player - just not a top level ACC player. To his credit, he can get the hot shooting hand when he wants. I would feel comfortable with him hanging out on the perimeter for open 3s. He's one of, if not THE best free throw shooters on the team. Problem is, he doesn't draw enough fouls to use that to his advantage.
2/22/2010 2:21:58 PM
Mays should transfer.....no way he plays meaningful minutes with Harrow/Brown/Javi here. Our team is completely different when he is running the point.
2/22/2010 2:44:57 PM
Mays will certainly have a big challenge ahead of him next year with those guards in front of him, I hope he's able to work on his game and stay in the rotation
2/22/2010 2:46:52 PM
As of now, Mays will be Harrow's only back-up in 11-12.
2/22/2010 2:47:55 PM
As a senior he will be backing up probably the best PG in the ACC. How would you feel? He could be a good player for UNCG maybe. Plus we need the scholly to get real ACC talent.
2/22/2010 3:18:44 PM
Javi is a seniorhe'd be a moron to transfer now
2/22/2010 3:21:02 PM
shit talking current players really makes you look like an ass, boozie, just sayin
2/22/2010 3:24:32 PM
Oh ok but you guys can blame them for every loss![Edited on February 22, 2010 at 3:25 PM. Reason : We have no talent! No PG! Next year! ][Edited on February 22, 2010 at 3:28 PM. Reason : Julius Mays will never be ACC material.....sorry to him and you but it's true]
2/22/2010 3:25:33 PM
boozie gets satisfaction looking like an ass.and saying that mays hasn't been playing well and citing his stats to prove it is not the same as saying "he should transfer". do you not see that?

I was speaking more along the lines of never really showing what they are capable of. Williams looks like an ACC caliber player but he certainly isn't showing it. Fells as a sophomore was our 4th-5th option he scored the lowest ppg of any starter on the team that featured a walkon as one of the first off the bench. Mays is styled along the lines of Atsur. Not flashy but tends to avoid multiple turnovers in a row (remember when Atsur was a freshman/ sophomore he had Hodge to bail him out and take over the game).
2/22/2010 3:49:31 PM
those comparisons are horribly flawed
2/22/2010 4:00:36 PM
I really feel like Mays has settled down and figured out how to sort of handle the ball in ACC play given his natural deficiencies which prevent him from being any good. The problem is that he can no longer shoot, at all. That ability will likely come back as an upperclassman and if he can still manage not to suck complete ass at breaking the press and only causes a shot clock violation 1 out of every 10 possessions instead of 1 out of every 3 he'd be a useful back up at both guard spots. As we've seen lately, we could certainly do worse...though obviously could do better as welledit: ^^^the people who compare CJW to Fells infuriate me. Fells had talent but disappeared. CJ is inconsistent because he just isnt very good right now[Edited on February 22, 2010 at 4:05 PM. Reason : ]

I think coach should just move him to SG next season while Javi is still here. He's a much better shooter than a ball handler. He can come in and relieve ZO or CJ off the bench.

Engin was one of the best defensive players we've had in years. He usually shut down whoever he guarded. When I think of him playing I have the image of him getting a kickball off an opponent's pass all the time
2/22/2010 4:33:42 PM
2/22/2010 4:47:21 PM
The only reason I compared Fells to Williams is that Fells never really got it and never became nearly the player he was capable of becoming. So far Williams is following that same trend. Atsur/Mays slow unathletic pg's who understand their deficiencies. If you remember Atsur as a great defender you smoked crack in any game where he was guarding a legit pg. They would absolutely blow by him because he was slow...
2/22/2010 5:41:49 PM
i'm bored, so I looked through all of the box scores in Engin's senior yearthe ONLY point guards who abused him were Singletary and Lawsonthere weren't many PGs in the nation, let alone the ACC, who could contain either of those two
2/22/2010 5:46:31 PM
2/22/2010 5:49:31 PM
2/22/2010 5:56:32 PM
i guess you never watched fells.he could score 10 points and play lazy defense, turn the ball over 8 times, and just be otherwise worthless.scoring isn't always the whole story.
2/22/2010 5:58:43 PM
just refuting the statement that "he never got it"maybe I don't know what "it" is, but in my definition of "it," I'd say he got "it"...and I'd love to have somebody with his type of "it" on this year's team to complement Smith's "it"
2/22/2010 6:01:12 PM
if you're gonna refute "it", you should probably know what "it" is.
2/22/2010 6:04:42 PM
i thought he was extremely consistent his senior year40% from three, 86% from FT...and 17/26 games with double figures (21/26 with 8 or more)
2/22/2010 6:21:23 PM
I'd love to have Fells right about now
2/22/2010 6:54:37 PM
same here, but i don't think he was as consistent as his senior year offensive statistics would suggest.it's hard to quantify defensive consistency, so i guess that's just my opinion.
2/22/2010 6:59:44 PM
i agree that he was inconsistent offensively however he usually shut his man down defensively which i believe hurt him on the other end from being so tired
2/22/2010 7:03:13 PM
and the internet told me he played on a bum ankle about half the season. actually, i think he said that in a interview. wph's?
2/22/2010 7:08:11 PM
2/22/2010 7:24:34 PM
i'd give-up any pg AND sg on the current team for the junior or senior atsur. nothing against those guys, but the consistency and team leadership that atsur provided at the point is what this team has really been lacking.... since atsur left.
2/22/2010 7:31:20 PM
^ I definitely agree! Don't get me wrong an experienced Atsur was light years ahead of what we have now.
2/22/2010 7:40:26 PM
tke is right, what this team needs is another consistent scorer (as evidenced by the 57 game statistic. who cares if he turned shit over, we turn it over plenty now)especially from deep. i never thought fells 3pt % was that great, but man having him on the perimeter would be helpful now.
2/22/2010 7:51:34 PM
we dont the turn ball over as much this year as we did last. we shoot much, much worse, howeverboth those things have more to do with costner than fells, though (well...fells would help the shooting aspect).
2/22/2010 7:59:19 PM
instead of having to resort to bringing the ball out and regrouping, i think fells would help us be able to convert some 3 on 1 fast breaks
2/22/2010 8:08:11 PM
Fells was terrible about handling the ball in transition though
2/22/2010 9:30:31 PM
Fells was listed as 6'6"i'd give him 6'2" ....maybe 6'3" at most
2/22/2010 9:39:09 PM
I'm 6'2", and I'm guessing that Fells had about 2-3 inches on me from a couple of chance meetings.
2/22/2010 9:56:05 PM
hahah, fells was def over 6'2". wtf
2/22/2010 10:00:16 PM
oh, so maybe he was a 6'6" guard-forward combo after all....one who may not be the best at handling the ball in transitionbecause we know that all 6'6" players, at the college level, are amazing ball handlers in transition
2/22/2010 10:07:35 PM
BTW, he only had 46 turnovers his entire senior yeari'd say that's not too shabby for someone who is a terrible ball handler
2/22/2010 10:10:44 PM
ha!..6'2"?.. well done tke?...
