Degrees don't necessarily prevent someone from becoming bigoted, an extremist, a fanatic... IOW, a mindless zombie. People who grow up in very conservative and/or religious households are far less likely to be swayed by their Western liberal education. The education for them is there to provide a living. By the time they start their higher education, it is already too late: Their values and beliefs are set in stone and they come from the person's upbringing and milieu, which is why it is nearly impossible to change such people.

It is all about habits. People who grow up eating a poor diet consisting of junk food and convenience foods are far more likely to continue with such a diet than to change it. You can give them all the healthy eating advice you want, but sorry, it is nearly impossible to change one's own or another person's neural connections, and that goes for diet, religion, political values, etc.

Too late I’m guessing as he spent weeks on that train and one statement doesn’t change that. It’s part of why he has negative approval for handling COVID-19 which is basically unprecedented. I think only one other world leader does, Bolsonaro (who is a compete psychopath).
