Yea i'm genuinely unsure if yang endorses that idea or if he is against it and trusts his followers to know that without comment. The former seems more likely based on standard Twitter behavior, but seems against his policies.

^^^ Pandemic relief check for civilians is already sort of UBI. They are discussing the amount to be $600 or $2k right now for the new coverage.

^^ Bloomberg offered him VP during the campaign. He has had all kind of resources and connections he needs to run for the mayor.

so Yang is off to a great start in the NYC Mayoral campaign

He's doing a town hall tonight with Michael Tubbs who as Mayor of Stockton, CA implemented a major UBI trial in 2019, whose preliminary results were just released.

I'm also very happy about the direction of the Universal Basic Income movement.

The COVID relief bill passed in December included $600 stimulus checks (despite Trump joining the Democrats' calls for $2000)

Now that Biden's American Rescue Plan is law, the remaining $1400 to make up the difference will start being sent out as soon as this weekend.

But the real exciting thing to me that relatively few are paying attention to is the expanded Child Tax Credit, which is projected to cut child poverty in HALF.

The tax credit is increased from $2000 to $3600 for dependents age 0-6 and $3000 for kids older than 6. PLUS it's now fully refundable.

Typically you would not be able to access that tax credit until filing 2021 taxes, but there is a provision that will allow parents starting in July to take this tax credit immediately in the form of monthly (or quarterly, the details aren't clear yet) checks. Sound familiar? Imagine what an extra $300/month, per child, will do for so many Americans, especially those with lower incomes who have been the most affected by the pandemic.

Even more exciting, over a dozen Senators (including former Democratic Presidential candidates Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Corey Booker, Michael Bennet and Kirsten Gillibrand) have already signed on to a letter from Senator Ron Wyden urging Biden to include recurring monthly payments in the next economic recovery package.

The data showing the immediate and long term benefits of direct cash to Americans is really going to help pave the way for a permanent Universal Basic Income.

his point is about creating a fair regulatory environment for ALL entrepreneurs. people are reading into it like he's against poorer street vendors who are just trying to make a living. he's clearly not against people trying to make a living. but if you have a set of rules, and some folks are playing by the rules and others are not, well yeah then the people who are playing by the rules are going to complain about it. also keep in mind, here he's simply echoing genuine feedback he's hearing from NYCers he talks to on the campaign trail. those people are still going to feel frustrated about this issue even if Yang or anybody else decides not to try to do anything about it. Yang's a problem solver, he's trying to propose something that will seem fair and work for as many people as possible.

if the rules need to be changed to allow more street vendors, then fine (see the regulatory adaptions that accompanied the rise of food trucks, airbnb, uber, etc). but in the meantime, let's enforce the rules that exist so small businesses that try to go about things the right way don't get the floor pulled out from under them.

I understand and agree with the activism around police use of force (particularly against minorities) and I agree with the idea that police budgets are way too high, and we'd get far better results if those taxpayer dollars were shifted to funding social programs that don't presume roles of enforcement by any means necessary.

But your take is out of touch with what those most vulnerable communities actually want. As much as I may agree with activist concerns, if the actual human beings most likely to be impacted by a policy change do not actually support your activism, then your activision is focused on the wrong thing

https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2020/08/26/why-america-needs-better-not-less-policing-many-neighborhoods-column/3428294001/

"A new State of Opportunity in America report, released by the Center for Advancing Opportunity and produced in partnership with Gallup, reveals intriguing and seemingly contradictory perceptions of police. The nearly 7,000 respondents to the poll hail from 47 states, including some of the poorest and crime-challenged zip codes in the United States.

The third annual report shows that contrary to conventional wisdom, most low-income, often inner-city, communities are not as hostile to or threatened by police as we are supposed to think. But they are not content either.

In fact, large majorities of residents in low-income “fragile communities” — including in both urban and rural areas — want more police presence, not less. In the more than a dozen low-income urban areas surveyed, 53% of residents want more police presence while 41% want the same — only 6% want less."

Think of it this way. Too often good intended policies like professional and business licensing are used as a way to disenfranchise minority groups and keep them as a type of second class citizen by depriving them of opportunities to establish legitimate businesses and grow wealth and influence.

Yang proposes by broadening access to business licenses, we remove these oppressive burdens to minority prosperity.

Public policy rarely can be so succinctly summarized as to fit entirely within a single tweet.

I didn't see a "nevermind about the enforcement" in that tweet (which I read before)

Good things are good but that doesn't make bad things also good

Maybe the answer is he is going "enforce" by ____, where _____ is something other than police. Seems like he would define that if so though.

Erica Smith, who is running in 2022 for North Carolina's US Senate seat (she came in second to that dumbass Cunningham in 2020), is supporting Universal Basic Income

https://ericafornc.medium.com/universal-basic-income-building-the-beloved-community-e408f8b231c6

Also, the IRS confirmed this week that they are prepared to start sending monthly checks in July as part of the American Rescue Plan's expanded child tax credit. it's essentially a basic income pilot for children.

It sucks how near universal it is to have semi blind "pro Israel no matter what", a small minority of govt officials have been doing better lately, mostly new blood, but even some "very progressive" Dems are very mealy mouthed/both sides on this. Ed Markey has been one of the 4 or 5 most progressive senators, at least lately, but put out some pretty weak tweets on this.

Not to excuse yang, but the Dem party as well as a whole needs to do better.
