Nice to see that charges were dropped and she won her suit, but ultimately it doesn't make a bit of difference as long as cops have qualified immunity. Until the taxpayers stop paying for this shit and the individual officers are held responsible for their gross misconduct nothing will change.

It's (possibly) alcohol, not weapons we're talking about here. I do not understand the need to assault a vehicle like that.

i mean... these people are having Molotov cocktails thrown at them. are they supposed to show up with their dicks in their hands?
8/14/2014 2:35:11 PM
because there is no in between
8/14/2014 2:40:01 PM
sure, a few molotov cocktails justifies an army shutting down a city and threatening protesters with assault rifles and armored tanks. sure. that's not instigating the crowd at all. sure.

If anyone gets the magazine The Week, they recently had a good article about the militarization of local police departments, the increase in use of SWAT tactics for cases that involve non-violent offenses, increase in police brutality and the deaths that result, how they obtain the military hardware (iirc a lot of it comes from the new Dept of Homeland Security), etc. It's a good, short and simple read.[Edited on August 14, 2014 at 3:25 PM. Does it mention why the ramp up?
8/14/2014 3:31:51 PM
^^ one of the main reasons why I'm anti-military is because of the trickle-down effect of militarization. Tools that are used to kill civilians in foreign countries inevitably come back to the states to weaken public dissent.^ because there's money to be made selling equipment via government contracts.
8/14/2014 3:37:03 PM
^^i don't remember the article all that well, but doubt they gave a specific reason. i think a lot of it just has to do with the more recent access they have to the weapons/armor/vehicles. IT's safer for them to use it (and less safe for the citizens). Here's a good article by Rand Paul: http://time.com/3111474/rand-paul-ferguson-police/

His logic, as warped as it is, it's tragically consistent. He, and others like him, are obedient authoritarians. Disproportionate responses from state actors are A-okay with him, provided that the targets of the abuse of power are a disenfranchised minority.
8/14/2014 7:21:52 PM

It's one thing to protest. It's another thing when fuckers in Missouri are fucking looting stores and vandalizing property. What the fuck does that have to do with a court's decision? Completely barbaric. I have no problems with the government taking those people out who are using the right to protest as an excuse for personal gain/vendetta in an unrelated case. That shit needs to be contained and those ghetto mother fuckers have no place in society.[Edited on August 14, 2014 at 9:18 PM. in the end the tragic result will be this:1) no cops will be charged with anything2) no changes will be made at the police department3) black people / college students will flip out4) it will be sensational for a short period of time (trayvon martin)and it will mostly be because the looting / property damage got so much attention. should protesters learn to not do that in the future? maybe. do americans tend to miss the big picture? obviously.
8/14/2014 10:04:04 PM
People tend to exploit situations for personal gain. This would explain the looting.
8/14/2014 10:07:24 PM
Smath please explain why people throwing molotovs warrants the presence of snipers/marksmen, because I can't even...

http://a.abcnews.com/images/US/gty_police_ferguson_weapon_jc_140814_4x3_992.jpgLook at the tripod-mounted son of a bitch this guy is wielding. This thing could headshot someone at 600 yards. What the fuck is that doing there?
8/15/2014 12:38:02 AM
Well at least these cocksuckers get to play with their toys. Some of us have been banging the police militarization drum for fucking years now. It's a shame that it takes a massive protest like this to get anyone to pay attention to it.Yes, the protestors have on occasion gotten violent, but the police are the ones who escalated the situation by tear gassing non-violent protests and firing canisters at people in their own fenced in front yards. This happened well before there were any molotov cocktails.I don't know why anyone is surprised, like the old adage goes... "when all you have is a hammer everything starts to look like a nail." The police only know how to operate with force, so of course their response to any kind of perceived non-compliance will be with FORCE. They've been fed this "us vs. them" propaganda for so long that they don't know how to think any differently. It's shameful.
8/15/2014 1:20:26 AM
^yep. the equipment needs to be scaled back. SWAT teams need to be only used for things that you need a SWAT team for. The 4th Amendment needs to be respected and abided by. Most importantly, the whole culture needs to change in a big way, and it's pretty thoroughly ingrained. There are so many cops who think they're some sort of damned ubermensch, with contempt for the common citizen. I think that we need fewer cops, but they should be more highly paid and qualified-college degrees, etc. If we scaled back the war on drugs, we could have fewer, better cops.
8/15/2014 1:30:28 AM
Wtf, in what countries does police look like that? I know... Honduras, Colombia, Nigeria, oh, and the other country that fits the pattern, USA of course.
